Foster Family Care For The Aged, Donald V. Sekora
Foster Family Care For The Aged, Donald V. Sekora
Dissertations and Theses
The following was a research practicum instituted as an actual project for the State of Montana Welfare Department between June, 1970, and May, 1971. The project had a two-fold purpose in being conceived: one purpose was to fulfill a graduate school academic requirement; and the second purpose was to fulfill a responsibility to the people of Montana who would eventually gain some benefits from this project. The series of written documents that follow are the description of that project's conception and actualization in six Montana counties. The first part is the project idea and theory; the next two parts consist …
A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler
A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An investigation has been conducted to consider the effects of midpalatal suture expansion on the cranial-facial complex. Nine patients were treated that had constricted maxillae. Data was obtained from frontal and lateral headplate radiographs which were taken at four intervals during treatment. The Rocky Mountain Data Systems diagnosis was utilized to interpret the radiographic data.
The data from the nine cases were averaged to obtain a composit [sic] change at each of the four times.
Examination of the lateral headplate data revealed that no permanent significant alteration occurred to the positions of the mandible or maxilla in a vertical or …
Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Bacteriuria As A Precursor Of Intracatheter Encrustation, Namcy Moll
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria that could be used to determine when urinary catheter changes were necessary. By determining when encrustation occurred, it was felt that some complications could be eliminated by changing catheters before obstruction occurred due to encrustation.
It was the purpose of this study to: 1) explore some indications for catheter change, 2) determine if encrustation of urinary catheters necessitates catheter change, and 3) estimate potential criteria for a routine time for catheter changes.
Forty-five catheters were examined after their removal from patients. Flow rates were determined on 33 …

A Comparison Of Various Teaching Methods For Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, B. Carol Altizer, Nancy S. Bailey
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to find out whether patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) learn more from auditory or from visual teaching. Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.
A pre-test was given to each of the patients who met the criteria for the study. One researcher gave the pre-test through an oral interview with the patient. After the pre-test, the patient received the teaching device assigned to him …
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
The Effect Of Elevated Glucose On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis In Genetically Diabetic Mice, Larry B. Thompson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Infiltration to an injury site or area of bacterial contamination by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (or neutrophils) is an early and essential phase of the early inflammatory reaction. Their action on foreign matter is the most critical step taken by body defense mechanisms in the first 24 hours. Anything which interferes with that action, phagocytosis, greatly hampers early inflammation. This study was designed to see the effect of elevated glucose levels on neutrophil phagocytosis in a unique strain of genetically diabetic mice.
Twenty-two diabetic and twenty-four control female mice were used. Blood glucose determinations and total white counts were made on each …
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Hyperactivity In Children, Pat Luttmann
Student Scholarship
The provided document, written in 1971, explores the multifaceted nature of hyperactivity in children, primarily within the framework of minimal brain dysfunction or MBD. The author notes that while these children often appear physically normal, they struggle with a disorganized central nervous system that prevents them from processing environmental stimuli effectively. This neurological impairment manifests as a cluster of symptoms, most notably hyperkinesis, distractibility, impulsiveness, and emotional instability. The text emphasizes that the number of children identified with these disorders is increasing, partly due to medical advances that allow more children to survive difficult births.
Diagnosis and treatment require a …
Persistence Of ''Australia Antigenemia" In Mentally Retarded Children Seven Years After Virus Hepatitis, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo
Persistence Of ''Australia Antigenemia" In Mentally Retarded Children Seven Years After Virus Hepatitis, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Australia antigen and antibody were assayed in acute and convalescent (1, 4 and 6 months) phase sera from 80 children with infectious hepatitis in an institution for the mentally retarded. A higher incidence of Australia antigenemia was found in 18 of 40 (45%) mongoloid children as compared to 9 of 40 (23%) non-mongoloid children. Australia antigen persisted 7 years after the hepatitis epidemic in 11 mongoloid and 2 non-mongoloid children with hepatitis. None of the hepatitis group, with or without Australia antigenemia, demonstrated precipitable antibody to the Australia antigen. The discussion emphasizes the lack of virologic and immunologic evidence relative …
A Replacement Prosthesis For The Hip: A Preliminary Report, H. M. Frost, E. R. Guise
A Replacement Prosthesis For The Hip: A Preliminary Report, H. M. Frost, E. R. Guise
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Because of theoretical as well as practical difficulty in the total hip endoprostheses available to orthopaedic surgeons at the present time, an anlysis of the present and potential difficulties reveals that substitution of a roller-bearing for the present slider-bearing prosthesis and the establishment of a larger end-bearing surface on the acetabular side would be of benefit. Thus, the Ring prosthesis was re-designed to satisfy these hopes. A modification of the Ring's approach gives complete acetabular exposure and control of the prosthetic insertion. This is a preliminary report describing the design modifications of a prosthesis, presently under investigation, and illustrated by …

Fever In Neoplastic Disease, Samuel L. Rosenthal, Robert W. Talley
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A comparison is made between incidence of fever in 132 patients with various types of disseminated cancer and 57 patients with diseases other than cancer during a 2- month observation period. Fifty-three febrile episodes were observed in cancer patients. Of these, 15 were of undetermined origin and 6 were noninfectious; none of the episodes occurred immediately following surgery. In the control group of 57 patients, there were 12 febrile episodes; of these, 7 were due to proven bacterial infection, 2 were due lo possible bacterial infection, and 3 were of undetermined etiology. All three febrile episodes in this latter group …
Effect Of Freezing And Thawing On Uptake Of Amino Acids Into Human Erythrocytes, Richard Moore, Rita Parenti, I. Rena Bizios
Effect Of Freezing And Thawing On Uptake Of Amino Acids Into Human Erythrocytes, Richard Moore, Rita Parenti, I. Rena Bizios
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
ABSTRACT - The transport of "C-amino acids into human erythrocytes and into erythrocytes which had been frozen and thawed was studied experimentally. The relative rates of uptake were found to be (in decreasing order): phenylalanine, leucine, alanine, trythophan, and glycine. Freezing (using gycerol as the cryoprotective additive) and thawing had no significant effect on either the magnitude of the rate constants or on the order of the above relative rates of amino acid uptake into erythrocytes suspended in isotonic TRIS-HCl buffer.

Co-Existent Klinefelter's Syndrome, Acquired Cutaneous Hepatic Porphyria And Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, W. R. Gronewald, G. B. Bluhm
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A patient is reported with Klinefelter's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and acquired cutaneous hepatic porphyria. Although patients with chromatin positive Klinefelter's syndrome may have elevated auto-antibodies, this patient had definite diagnostic criteria for SLE. Furthermore, evidence of disturbed porphyrin metabolism compatible with acquired cutaneous hepatic porphyria was found. It is speculated that the major disturbance in our patient's porphyrin biosynthesis may be distal to ^-ALA synthetase. Any association between the three diseases is conjectural: however, it is noteworthy that both SLE and porphyria are more common in the female and that our patient had two X chromosomes in addition …

Mycosis Fungoides With Thrombotic Microangiopathy And Major Central Nervous System Manifestations, T. A. Chapel, S. M. Saeed, B. W. Steinhauer
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A case of mycosis fungoides is presented which terminated in death by an acute central nervous system illness. Autopsy revealed thrombotic microangiopathy. This is felt to be the first report of thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura occurring in a patient with mycosis fungoides. Since thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura has been reported in association with other malignancies, the association of these relatively rare disorders may represent more than a coincidence.

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone Ii. Interaction With Other Hormones, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow
Hypophyseal Growth Hormone Ii. Interaction With Other Hormones, M. Saeed-Uz-Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Growth hormone (GH) synthesis and release is controlled by hypothalamic GH releasing factor. Thyroid hormones, androgens and estrogens in physiologic concentrations enhance GH secretion but a controlling role for glucagon and vasopressin in GH release is not established. Under stress, ACTH directly facilitates GH release while the similar action of the catecholamines is mediated by the a-adrenergic receptors. Though physiologic doses of glucorticoids and progestins do not affect GH liberation, prolonged administration of medroxyprogesterone acetate or of glucocorticoids in high dosage will decrease blood levels or blunt Gti responsiveness. GH enhances the release of insulin. A shift in adrenal steroid …

Health Nurse Clinician: An Extended Role For The Professional Nurse, C. E. Rupe, Diana Downs, Diane L. Kerr, William W. Hardy
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A program to upgrade the level of nursing involvement in patient care has been established in conjunction with Wayne Slate University. Offered as a possible solution to the shortage of health care personnel, the master's degree program would result in an upward movement of medical personnel and provide more continuity of care to the patient. More specifically, the trained Health Nurse Clinician would be able to provide better nursing care because of the nurse's greater awareness of the patient's health problem. She (or he) could also free the physician from some of the time-consuming aspects of routine physical examination without …

The Hypocalcemic Effects Of Actinomycin D And Mithramycin, Eduardo L. Reyes, Robert W. Talley
The Hypocalcemic Effects Of Actinomycin D And Mithramycin, Eduardo L. Reyes, Robert W. Talley
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Both actinomycin D and mithramycin are useful agents in the treatment of cancer. They can also produce hypocalcemia, a comparatively rare phenomenon in cancer. Two such cases are presented in detail. Neither patient had the classic symptoms of hypocalcemia. Instead, the clinical picture was more compatible with hypercalcemia. The mechanism of action of each drug is explained; therapeutic implications are made with regards to their synergistic effects when used in combination with the standard calcium-lowering agents. Attention is drawn to the inhibitory action of these two agents on the calcium-mobilizing effect of the parathyroid hormone. The hypocalcemic effects of these …

Hypophyseal Growth Hormone: I. Control Of Secretion, M. Saeed Zafar, Raymond C. Mellinger, Lewis B. Morrow
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Growth hormone (GH) is a major hormone of the anterior pituitary gland. Once established, its secretion continues throughout life. GH was first recognized in 1866 as a factor controlling growth. More recently, it has been demonstrated as a vital regulator of fat, carboyhdrate and protein metabolism. In fact, GH influence on the intermediary metabolism is the major mechanism by which growth and development are regulated. Numerous hormonal and nonhormonal factors have been shown to modify the basic pattern of GH synthesis and secretion. In this article we have reviewed some of these nonhormonal factors.

Surreptitious Ingestion Of Oral Anticoagulants, Thomas H. Greidanus, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Raymond W. Monto
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Hypoprothrombinemia secondary to surreptitious ingestion of coumarin or indanedione anticoagulants may be a difficult diagnosis for the unsuspecting physician. Four such case reports are presented. The disease should be suspected if the prothrombin time is markedly elevated and the individual is associated with the medical profession or has had previous treatment with oral anticoagulants. The diagnosis is confirmed by finding a deficiency in Factors II (prothrombin), VII, IX, and X and the presence of the coumarin or indanedione anticoagulant in the blood. The motive generally is that of gaining attention rather than committing suicide. Liver disease. Vitamin K deficiency states …

A Follow-Up Study Of Patients With Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease And Their Practice Of The Breathing Pattern, A. Theodora Djagia
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this descriptive survey was to do a follow-up study on patients with COPD to find out to what extent these patients have followed instruction to continue exercising the abdominal and diaphragmatic muscles, with the utilization of a breathing pattern. Literature was reviewed which revealed contradictory findings in regard to the physiological benefits of the use of the breathing pattern. Nine patients met the criteria and signed a consent sheet to be visited in their homes. An Observation Data Sheet and Interview Guide were the tools used to collect data. A point system was constructed and used with …
