The Development And Evaluation Of A Seminar For Teachers On The Awareness And Management Of Allergic Conditions Of Their Students In The Classroom, Elwin C. Munson Jan 1983

The Development And Evaluation Of A Seminar For Teachers On The Awareness And Management Of Allergic Conditions Of Their Students In The Classroom, Elwin C. Munson

Dissertations

Problem. Many children with allergic problems go without treatment because their problems go unrecognized by both their parents and teachers. The purpose of this project was to bring about change on the part of teachers enabling them better to address allergic problems in their students. Literature was reviewed with respect to allergies and with respect to the use of inservice seminars for teachers. The posttest means for all three areas of measurement of the seminar group and control group were adjusted for pretest scores by analysis of covariance which indicated a significant difference in favor of the seminar group in …

Protein Contributions Of The Male Accessory Organs To The Composition Of Human Seminal Plasma As Determined By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis, Edward E. Gaunt Jan 1983

Protein Contributions Of The Male Accessory Organs To The Composition Of Human Seminal Plasma As Determined By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis, Edward E. Gaunt

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Human Seminal Plasma was evaluated using a High Resolution Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis technique adapted by this laboratory. Seminal plasma from healthy volunteers with recently proven fertility were characterized using this technique to establish "normal" protein distribution patterns in the two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel slab. In addition, time studies were performed on selected specimens to determine the effects of liquefaction on seminal plasma protein composition within the first several hours after collection. Split ejaculates were collected for identification and elaboration of accessory organ components in the whole seminal plasma specimen. A more direct approach to accessory organ component analysis involved electrophoresis of semen …

Natural History Of The Porcine Bioprosthetic Heart Valve, Donald J. Magilligan Jr., Joseph W. Lewis Jr., J. Lancelot Lester Iii, Paul D. Stein, Mohsin Alam, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Julio C. Davilia, David W. Smith Sep 1982

Natural History Of The Porcine Bioprosthetic Heart Valve, Donald J. Magilligan Jr., Joseph W. Lewis Jr., J. Lancelot Lester Iii, Paul D. Stein, Mohsin Alam, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Julio C. Davilia, David W. Smith

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The porcine bioprosthesis has been the prosthetic valve of choice at Henry Ford Hospital since October 1971. By 1979, 23 cases of degeneration had been seen, and the rate seven years after implantation was 16%. Now, with a ten-year follow-up, there are 41 degenerated valves. After seven years, the percent free of degeneration is 88%, (SE of 2% [standard error]); at eight years, 82% (SE of 2.9%,); at nine years, 80% (SE of 3.4%); and at ten years, the percent free of degeneration is 69% (SE of 6.5%,). There was no difference in degeneration between men and women, between aortic …

Frequency Content Of Heart Sounds And Systolic Murmurs In Patients With Porcine Bioprosthetic Valves: Diagnostic Value For The Early Detection Of Valvular Degeneration, Paul D. Stein, Hani N. Sabbah, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Stephen R. Kemp, Donald J. Magilligan Jr. Sep 1982

Frequency Content Of Heart Sounds And Systolic Murmurs In Patients With Porcine Bioprosthetic Valves: Diagnostic Value For The Early Detection Of Valvular Degeneration, Paul D. Stein, Hani N. Sabbah, Jeffrey B. Lakier, Stephen R. Kemp, Donald J. Magilligan Jr.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The frequency content of heart sounds and murmurs in patients with implanted bioprosthetic valves may reveal evidence of degenerative changes before such changes are clinically apparent. An increased dominant frequency of the heart sound caused by a bioprosthetic valve in either the aortic or mitral positions suggests stiffening of the leaflets. While a musical systolic murmur of a bioprosthetic valve in the mitral position suggests flutter from a torn, insufficient leaflet, limited observations of musical systolic murmurs in the aortic position do not seem to indicate a degenerated valve.

Fluid Dynamic Stresses In The Region Of A Porcine Bioprosthetic Valve, Hani N. Sabbah, Paul D. Stein Sep 1982

Fluid Dynamic Stresses In The Region Of A Porcine Bioprosthetic Valve, Hani N. Sabbah, Paul D. Stein

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Mechanical forces caused by the dynamics of blood flow in the region of porcine bioprosthetic valves may directly injure the valve as well as formed elements of the blood. Previous in vitro studies in our laboratory evaluated quantitatively the fluid dynamic stresses in the region of such valves. In this paper we discuss our results in relation to fluid dynamic stresses found in patients with normal and diseased natural aortic valves. The levels of fluid dynamic stresses that may produce mechanical injury to erythrocytes and platelets are reviewed. These may indicate the extent to which fluid dynamic stresses may activate …

Clinical Note: Use Of Clonidine To Detoxify Opiate-Addicted Patients, Dennis L. Caffrey, Tai P. Yoo Sep 1982

Clinical Note: Use Of Clonidine To Detoxify Opiate-Addicted Patients, Dennis L. Caffrey, Tai P. Yoo

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This study investigated the utility of systematically administering clonidine to detoxify opiate-dependent inpatients. Fifteen patients received a 0.1 mg dose of clonidine orally at 8:00 am, 12:00 noon, 4:00 pm, and at bedtime. A 0.1 mg dose was also administered as needed if any withdrawal signs were evidenced, but this additional dose was rarely needed after the second day of treatment. Night sweats were the only significant complaint reported. All 15 patients were successfully detoxified after ten days of treatment.

The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz Aug 1982

The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Successful adaptation to diabetes is probably a function of many factors: the stress involved, the rewards, the motivation of the individual, and the self concept. The more optimal the self concept the more optimal the behavior may be. By helping the patient shape a positive self concept, a base can be built for blood glucose control (Bruhn, 1977, pp. 93-97). One method of improving self concept or self esteem may be through the development of self-help support groups for diabetics.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of self-help support group intervention on the levels of self …

Familial Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis In Blacks, Jack M. Bernstein, Michael Kleerekoper Jun 1982

Familial Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis In Blacks, Jack M. Bernstein, Michael Kleerekoper

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon disease that has rarely been reported in blacks. Historical, clinical, and pathological findings in three black patients, in addition to those previously reported in the literature, suggest that the spectrum of the disease is identical in both blacks and whites. Considering the disease as either different or unknown in the black population is probably not justified.

Acid Phosphatase: Clinical Utility Of The First Tumor Marker, Christopher J. Dipaolo, Jan Rival Jun 1982

Acid Phosphatase: Clinical Utility Of The First Tumor Marker, Christopher J. Dipaolo, Jan Rival

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Acid phosphatase was the first tumor marker to be measured in blood. Although it is used as a marker of prostatic carcinoma, serum levels are also elevated in many diseases of prostate, bone, and hematologic tissue. While serum acid phosphatase concentration is elevated in patients with prostatic carcinoma or infarction, it may also be increased merely with benign hypertrophy and after prostate massage. Recent studies demonstrate that levels are not significantly increased after routine rectal examination. Although of limited use as a screening test, the assay may be useful in staging, prognostication during hormonal therapy, and in making clinical decisions. …

Rupture Of Mycotic Aneurysm During Pregnancy: Another Hazard Of Drug Abuse, Jayanta Kumar Dirghangi, Mohammed R. Ansari

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Widespread parenteral drug abuse has led to an increase in mycotic aneurysms in the area of drug injection. We report an unusual case of ruptured mycotic aneurysm of the right external iliac artery in a pregnant woman who was a heroin addict. In the third trimester, she developed a large hematoma that resulted in intra-uterine fetal death, premature labor, and hypovolemic shock. This case presented a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma that was confused with the syndrome of ruptured utero-ovarian veins.

A Correlation Study Of Facial Soft Tissue Proportions (Golden Sections) And Cephalometric Measurements Of Golden Sections And The Eleven Factor Analysis, Russell Andrew Sutliff Apr 1982

A Correlation Study Of Facial Soft Tissue Proportions (Golden Sections) And Cephalometric Measurements Of Golden Sections And The Eleven Factor Analysis, Russell Andrew Sutliff

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Frontal photographs on a total of one hundred and three individuals who had been treated by Dr. Ricketts, and had been involved in a prior study at Rocky Mountain Data Systems, were evaluated for facial proportions according to Ricketts application of Pythagoras' golden section. Seven facial proportions were analyzed from 1:1 retention phase frontal photographs. Forty individuals, made up of twenty-two females and eighteen males, 12.2 to 21.0 years of age, were selected and divided into two groups of twenty each, according to their soft tissue facial proportions. A range of acceptability for the facial proportions was derived. Proportions within …

Acute Burkitt's Leukemia: Case Report And Literature Review, S. Raman, S. M. Saeed, K. R. Kini

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The occurrence of leukemia in Burkitt's lymphoma, with or without visceral or nodal tumefaction is uncommon, and its initial presentation as leukemia is even more unusual. Because it has a poor chemotherapeutic response and a grave prognosis, it is important to recognize this unusual leukemia correctly. Our report describes the clinical and pathologic findings of Burkitt's lymphoma cell leukemia in a five-year-old white boy who presented with abdominal distension, hepatosplenomegaly, and lymphadenopathy. Blood examination revealed normocytic normochromic anemia, erythroblastosis, slight leukocytosis, and the presence of numerous (24%) blasts. A diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma was established on the basis of morphologic, …

Cytopathology Of Thyroid Nodules, Sudha R. Kini, J. Martin Miller, Joel I. Hamburger Mar 1982

Cytopathology Of Thyroid Nodules, Sudha R. Kini, J. Martin Miller, Joel I. Hamburger

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Fine needle aspiradon biopsy is a simple and accurate means of obtaining a tissue diagnosis for a thyroid nodule. Our experience with 3,000 such biopsies and 242 surgically proven cancers has enabled us to characterize the cytologic presentations of the common "nodular" thyroid diseases. We can readily identify nodular goiter and papillary, poorly differentiated follicular, medullary, anaplastic, and metastatic cancers. Benign follicular neoplasms and well-differentiated follicular cancers cannot be separated with great accuracy, but useful predictions can be made. Care is required to recognize the cellular abnormalities of autoimmune thyroiditis and to diagnose the coexistence of this disease with malignant …

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew Jan 1982

The Effect Of Cardiac Rehabilitation On Blood Lipids, Carol Lynn Bartholomew

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The effect of cardiac rehabilitation on blood lipids was studied in a sample of seventeen male participants of the Greenville Hospital Center cardiac rehabilitation program. These subjects all suffered myocardial infarctions, but none had surgery to by-pass the obstructed coronary circulation. Paired values were obtained for triglyceride, serum cholesterol and HDL cholesterol before, and after the exercise program. The time span between the before-exercise and after-exercise values ranged from five to thirty-one weeks. The differences in the paired values were analyzed by the t-test. No significant decrease occurred in triglyceride or serum cholesterol. A significant increase occurred in HDL cholesterol.
