BACKGROUND: Email reminders facilitate timely task completion but can create substantial administrative burdens for clerkship staff. In our emergency medicine (EM) clerkship, third-year medical students initiate digital evaluation requests after each clinical shift, requiring frequent manual reminders to maintain completion rates. The time-intensive nature of this process highlights the need for a more efficient and scalable approach.
METHODS: This multi-site, pre-post study evaluated clinical performance evaluation completion rates and time to completion during the required EM clerkship over 48 weeks before and after implementation of an automated reminder system in September 2024. The system integrated existing survey functionality with Microsoft …

In adult mice, new bone accrual following mechanical load is mediated by the neurotrophin nerve growth factor (NGF) that is expressed by osteoblasts on the bone surface. NGF can bind to its high affinity receptor, neurotrophic tyrosine kinase receptor type 1 (TrkA), on peripheral sensory nerves resident in bone and support new bone formation. However, the osteoanabolic therapeutic potential of NGF-TrkA signaling to repair bone is limited due to the long-lasting thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia induced by administration of NGF in mice and humans. Here, we investigated whether 1) mature osteoblasts are the primary source of NGF required for bone …

Trauma and Acute Care Articles
Purpose: Approximately one in four adults aged ≥65 years experiences a fall each year, and over one-third of these events require medical care. Older adults are at higher risk of complications because of comorbidities. Most prior studies have focused on incidence rather than outcomes, and few have evaluated the association between age and traumatic brain injury (TBI) mortality. This study assessed risk factors and risk-adjusted mortality and morbidity among older adults with moderate or severe TBI.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of data from a single-center trauma registry. Inclusion criteria were age ≥65 years, admission ≥3 days (2019-2024), Abbreviated …

Follistatin (Fst), an extracellular inhibitor of the TGF-β signaling pathway, plays a critical role in tooth development, particularly in crown morphogenesis and enamel patterning. While molar root number is conserved within species and between upper and lower jaws, the molecular mechanisms governing root patterning remain largely unknown. To investigate the role of Fst in root formation, we analyzed K14-Cre-mediated Fst knockout mice. During embryonic and early postnatal stages, Fst was dynamically expressed in the dental epithelium including the lingual epithelium, and primary and secondary enamel knots, as well as in the dental mesenchyme at the base of the dental papilla. …

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Due To Post-Traumatic Osseous Tunnel Formation: A Rare Case And Surgical Management, Dev Y. Patel, Eshan Doshi, Fiona Zimmerman, Jamal Revolus, Michael Kimball, Michael Franco
Cooper Rowan Medical Journal
Tarsal tunnel syndrome (TTS) is classically a compressive neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve beneath the flexor retinaculum, presenting with plantar foot pain and paresthesias. Standard surgical management of TTS involves release of the flexor retinaculum to decompress the nerve. We report a rare and unusual case of TTS in which the posterior tibial nerve was encased within a post-traumatic osseous tunnel accompanied by dense fibrotic tissue, representing an atypical and previously undescribed etiology of nerve entrapment. In this case, surgical decompression required a modified approach involving meticulous dissection of the tibial nerve from its encasement by heterotopic ossification and …

Abstract
Introduction:
Opioid overdose is a pressing public health concern in the United States. In 2022, prescription opioids were involved in 15% of all opioid deaths.1 Despite CDC recommendations for prescribing naloxone to high-risk patients, primary care physicians prescribe only 1.5 naloxone prescriptions per 100 prescriptions of high-dose opioids.2,3 Strategies are needed for healthcare institutions to expand naloxone access and mitigate opioid-related harm. This pilot study assesses the impact of a pharmacist-led quality improvement patient outreach initiative on increasing naloxone prescribing for adult patients taking ≥ 50 MME per day of prescription opioids as recommended by current CDC guidelines.

IntroductionStructural and social conditions influence pediatric health outcomes. Successful implementation of social needs screening and referral programs depends on community-based organizations (CBOs) to provide resources that address health-related social needs (HRSN). We explored current practices and perspectives of health care workers and CBO representatives on improving health system-CBO partnerships.MethodsParticipants were purposively recruited from a variety of health care settings involved in HRSN screening and CBOs delivering resources in the community. Participants completed semi-structured interviews. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to summarize data.ResultsTen key informants participated (six health care workers and four CBO representatives). Four themes were identified: 1) mismatches in …
