Unprovoked Seizures And Myoclonus In Patients With Alzheimer's Disease, Marcia L. Morris
Unprovoked Seizures And Myoclonus In Patients With Alzheimer's Disease, Marcia L. Morris
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Although anecdotal references commonly presume that seizures eventually occur in patients affected with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), no previous American study has documented the rate of new onset, unprovoked seizures in DAT patients. There are few documented cases of the occurrence of myoclonus in autopsy-proven DAT. In a series of 83 autopsy-proven DAT cases, medical records were scrutinized for the presence of any seizure or myoclonic activity. Final evaluations were made by a neurologist. Of the 83 cases, 8 had experienced one or more unprovoked seizures after the onset of DAT. Based on age-specific incidence rates from a …

FEMINIZING tumors of the adrenal cortex are associated with symptoms that presumably reflect the combined effects of estrogen excess and androgen deficiency — gynecomastia, diminished libido, attenuated potency, and testicular and prostatic atrophy.1 2 3 4 5 Although such tumors are extremely rare, they provide a unique opportunity to appraise the nature of endogenous estrogen action on the gonadal axis in men. In principle, the pathophysiologic effects of estrogen hypersecretion could be expressed at the level of either the Leydig cell or the hypothalamic–pituitary axis (or both), with consequent suppression of androgen production. In the present studies, we investigated …
The Immunology Of Transplantation, J. R. Serie
The Immunology Of Transplantation, J. R. Serie
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A number of life-threatening diseases, such as kidney failure, diabetes, and certain kinds of coronary heart disease, can be cured by organ transplantation. However, despite decades of research, graft rejection remains a very real threat to the organ transplant recipient. In attempting to develop methods that interfere with the graft rejection process, scientists have uncovered a remarkably complex system of cellular interactions that allows the total destruction of a transplanted organ while leaving the recipient's own organs untouched. This ability to distinguish self from non-self is achieved through intercellular communication involving cell-to-cell contact and the release of a number of …

Sulfite Residues In Maraschino Cherries, Julie A. Nordlee, Laura B. Martin, Steve L. Taylor
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
A survey of 53 samples of maraschino cherries from 14 different processors revealed that total sulfite residues averaged 52.3 ± 44.7 ppm. However, 58.5% of the samples had less than 40 ppm total SO2, while only 7.6% had greater than 120 ppm total SO2 indicating that the distribution was skewed in the direction of lower residue levels. Free sulfite residues in the 53 samples were considerably lower, averaging 14.2 ± 7.1 ppm. With free SO2 levels, 35.8% of the samples had less than 10 ppm free SO2, while only 5.7% had greater than 30 …

A Comparison Of Selected Nutrition Factors Of Personal Care Residents With Nutrition For The Elderly Residents., Jill Kay Costin
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Persons in the Nutrition for the Elderly program in Barren River Area Development District in Kentucky and personal care residents at Lakeview Nursing Home, Morgantown, Kentucky, and Glasgow Rest Home, Glasgow, Kentucky participated I this study on a voluntary basis. The population consisted of an intact sample of sixty-eight persons: forty-six personal care residents (PC residents) and twenty-two Nutrition for the Elderly participants (NE participants). The Ne participants and Pc residents were compared to determine which received the best nutritional care. Selected parameters of nutritional assessment were compared for the two groups be means of a t test. The groups …

Genetics And Epidemiology Of Gallbladder Disease In New World Native Peoples, K M Weiss, R E Ferrell, C L Hanis, P N Styne
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Native peoples of the New World, including Amerindians and admixed Latin Americans such as Mexican-Americans, are highly susceptible to diseases of the gallbladder. These include cholesterol cholelithiasis (gallstones) and its complications, as well as cancer of the gallbladder. Although there is clearly some necessary dietary or other environmental risk factor involved, the pattern of disease prevalence is geographically associated with the distribution of genes of aboriginal Amerindian origin, and levels of risk generally correspond to the degree of Amerindian admixture. This pattern differs from that generally associated with Westernization, which suggests a gene-environment interaction, and that within an admixed population …

The Effects Of Tri-O-Cresyl Phosphate On 2',3'-Cyclicnucleotide-3'-Phosphohydrolase Activity In Neural And Non-Neural Tissue Of The Rat, Mark K. Schlager
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
A total of 44 Long-Evans rats received 5.7 g/kg tri-O-cresyl phosphate (TOCP) orally every 3 days for 6 days. A second group of 13 rats received 4.6 g/kg orally every 3 days for 6 days. Animals were administered atropine sulfate (10 mg/kg) intraperitoneally every 6 hours or as needed to alleviate cholinergic symptoms. Ten control animals were given corn oil orally. Eight rats (18%) survived the 5.7 g/kg dose regimen and 5 rats (38%) survived the 4.6 g/kg dose regimen. Surviving rats were killed at 30-33 days post-dose. Signs of delayed neuropathy included ataxia and motor impairment.
