The Relationship Between The Lingual Surface Of The Maxillary Central Incisor And The Eminence Of The Mandibular Fossae, Robert A. Huffer

Gnathologists have suggested that in order to prevent excessive wear on posterior teeth, alveolar bone loss due to traumatic occlusion, and temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disturbances, the mandibular incisors should disclude the posterior teeth by moving along the lingual surfaces of the maxillary incisors as the condyles move down the articular eminence in protrusion. It is suggested that in order for this to occur, the lingual surface of the maxillary incisors should be steeper than the eminence.

The primary objective or this study is essentially to acquire further knowledge of the factors involved in the nervous and humoral control of vascular smooth muscle tone. The relative importance of the nervous and endogenous vasotropic humoral control or vasomotor tone under normal conditions as well as under conditions or hypotension can be evaluated, at least in part, by observing the electrical activity occurring in single vascular smooth muscle cells of the mesenteric microcirculation. Since movements of the TMJ may be translatory, rotary, or both, the form of the articular eminence becomes an integral part of the anatomy of the joint and is important in an understanding of TMJ function. A cephalometric technique was developed to accurately determine the anatomical form of the articular eminence. From a series of cephalograms, taken in various mandibular positions, the protrusive condylar path was determined. This path was also determined from a gnathological recording technique. A New Biological Stain For Peripheral Blood And Bone Marrow Smears, A. R. Villanueva

A new blood stain has been developed for the demonstration and differentiation of cell types in peripheral blood or marrow smears, parasites in blood, and tissue impression preparations. It is available as a prebuffered powder which is dissolved in 100% reagent methanol. The method of staining is simple and rapid, with no precipitate. Overstaining is not likely to occur. The tinctorial patterns closely resemble some predecessors and, as the stain solution ages the staining quality improves. It is specific, stable, reproducible and resistant to fading.

Serum Hepatitis At Henry Ford Hospital 1958-1967, K. S. Murthy, B. M. Schuman

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

An analysis was done to determine the risk of hepatitis related to transfusions of whole blood or blood fractions. Of 180 cases indexed as serum hepatitis at Henry Ford Hospital, from 1958 to 1967, 148 had been transfused at this hospital. The overall incidence of hepatitis was 1.13 cases per 1,000 units transfused with a mortality rate of 7.4%.

Although several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the transport of hydrophylilc cations across lipoprotein barriers, the nature and identity of the carrier mechanism have not yet been elucidated. The present communication is concerned with a mechanism postulating that monoesterified phosphate on the inositol moiety of phosphatidyl inositol might provide anionic sites that function as cation carriers via a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycle, catalyzed in its simplest sequence by phosphatidyl inositol kinase and diphosphoinositide phosphomonoesterase activities. In this context, one might reasonably expect that turnover of monoesterified phosphate in the polyphosphoinositides of isolated renal cortex tubules would be reduced in tubules in …

Aqueous Microbiology: The Possible Role Of Cell Wall Deficient Bacteria In Uveitis, Philip C. Hessburg, Lioa H. Mattman, Carolyn Barth, Lloyd T. Dutcheshen

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Samples of aqueous humor were obtained from the anterior chamber of patients with uveitis. Bacterial L-forms, or cell wall deficient forms, were recovered from 11 of 19 eyes with unexplained uveitis. These bacterial variants were cultured on newer, highly specialized media and stained with acridine orange. This stain demonstrates fluorescence of nucleic acids under UV microscopy.

A Cephalometric, Anatomic And Histologic Investigation Of The Effects Resulting From A Heavy Interrupted Orthopedic Force To The Maxilla Of The Macaca Mulatta Monkey, Roger Wayne Triftshauser

The purpose of this study was to determine changes that occur in the craniofacial complex, when a heavy interrupted orthopedic force is employed to retract the maxilla in the post puberal rhesus monkey. Cephalometric, histologic and anatomic examinations were utilized to substantiate the findings.

Four female rhesus monkeys were used for experimentation. Two were experimental animals and the other two controls. Cervical retraction with headgear was applied over a period of 313 days and 159 days to the two experimental animals. Forces not exceeding 2.5 lbs. were found most effective.

An antibody chemically and immunologically active against bovine testicular hyaluronidase was produced in rabbits by injecting them with purified hyaluronidase in complete Freund's adjuvant. Nonspecific antibodies, reacting with human and bovine proteins which had little or no hyaluronidase activity, were also detected by the double agar immunodiffusion technique using antiserum against these proteins. After absorption of the antiserum with bovine heart and liver and removal of the precipitation bands against human and bovine tissue proteins, the antiserum inhibited the chemical activity of the purified hyaluronidase and exhibited immunologic activity against the purified hyaluronidase as shown by the agar double immunodiffusion …

Postpartum depression was thought to be an important component of maternity blues and was the factor explored in this study. Sleep was hypothesized as a factor affecting either the occurrence or severity of postpartum depression. Hence, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between sleep deprivation and postpartum depression.

Twenty patients were interviewed one to three weeks prior to their expected dates of delivery. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory Depression scale was administered during the interview and each patient kept a record of her hours of sleep during the following week. Serum immunoglobulin levels are reported in 75 patients with jaundice: 32 with jaundice due to virus hepatitis and 43 with jaundice due to obstruction. The degrees and variations of serum immunoglobulins (Ig), (IgM, IgG and IgA) in virus hepatitis (IH and SH) with jaundice are compared with those found in obstructive jaundice. In 32 of the patients with jaundice from virus hepatitis, serum IgM (100%) and IgG (75%) were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values. Neither IgM nor IgG levels were elevated above 2 Standard Deviations from the mean values in 33 of 43 patients (76.7%) with …
