Human Milk Feeding And Its Impact On The Incidence Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Maya C. Kern Jan 2026

Human Milk Feeding And Its Impact On The Incidence Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, Maya C. Kern

Nursing | Senior Theses

One of the leading causes of morbidity and death for preterm and very low birth weight (VLBW) newborns is still necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Existing literature consistently shows that the bioactive, anti-inflammatory, and microbiome-supporting components of human breast milk, including donor human milk, significantly lower the incidence of NEC. However, a lot of infants are forced to rely on formula and nutrient fortifiers because they cannot obtain maternal or donor milk. A critical gap persists regarding whether human milk derived fortifiers offer greater NEC protection than bovine derived fortifiers in infants who must receive formula. This thesis examines three interconnected themes; …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Despite the revolutionary impact of genome engineering tools in medicine, the safe and effective intracellular delivery of CRISPR remains a major obstacle to clinical applications. Here, we utilize precision molecular targeting and delivery strategies based on CRISPR-nuclease-dead Cas9 (dCas9) systems adapted for epigenetic repression (dCas9-Krüppel-associated box [KRAB]) to silence oncogenic drivers with high selectivity. As proof of principle, we target the EWSR1-FLI1 translocation, which encodes a chimeric and hard-to-drug oncogenic transcription factor driving approximately 85% of the cases of Ewing sarcoma (EWS)—an aggressive childhood malignancy. We describe the development of a programmable, non-viral polymeric system for the delivery of dCas9-KRAB …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Hypertension is a leading contributor to global morbidity and mortality, arising from the interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors together with the dysregulation of multiple physiological systems involved in blood pressure control. Recent advances have established the gut as a central regulator, implicating the intestinal microbiota and barrier integrity in the modulation of blood pressure. Alterations in the gut microbial consortium, along with changes in levels of metabolites produced by the microbiota, have been associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models and human studies. Key microbial metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids, trimethylamine-N-oxide, and bile acids influence endothelial function, …

Association Of Arterial Partial Oxygen Pressure With Mortality In Critically Ill Patients With Sepsis: An Observational Prospective Cohort Study, Talal Ibrahim Mostafa Hagag, Salwa M.A. Dahesh

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background Up till now, the best oxygenation plan in sepsis is a moot point. Although both hypoxemia and hyperoxemia have been linked to negative outcomes, it is unclear whether the arterial oxygen tension (PaO₂) contributes to mortality on its own. The present study aimed to study the association between the arterial partial oxygen pressure and the mortality among critically ill patients with sepsis. Methods A prospective observational study was carried out, including 120 critically ill patients with sepsis. The patients were classified according to arterial partial oxygen pressure into two groups: the PaO₂ >80 mmHg group, which included 61 patients, …

Transcortical Approach For Central Neurocytoma: Efficacy, Safety, And Functional Outcome, Eslam Abozied Kandil

Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research

Background Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare intraventricular neuronal tumor that predominantly affects young adults and is frequently associated with obstructive hydrocephalus. Surgical resection remains the cornerstone of treatment, yet the optimal surgical corridor and predictors of long-term outcome remain debated. Objective To evaluate the efficacy, safety, functional outcomes, and oncological control of transcortical microsurgical resection for central neurocytoma at a single neurosurgical center. Methods A retrospective review was conducted of all patients undergoing transcortical resection of central neurocytoma between 2017 and 2025. Clinical presentation, radiological characteristics, surgical approach, extent of resection, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion, postoperative complications, functional outcomes, …

Background: Hip surgery requires effective pain control for proper recovery and decreasing the length of hospital stay. Aims: We aimed to assess the analgesic effect of Erector spinae plane block (ESPB) and pericapsular nerve group (PENG) blocks in pain control after hip operations. Methods: This randomized clinical trial included 69 ASA I–II patients scheduled for hip surgery were randomly allocated into three groups: PENG block, ESPB, and control groups (23 each). The primary outcome was postoperative pain assessed via the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) at rest and during movement. Secondary outcomes included intraoperative and 48-hour morphine consumption, time to first …

Background While the best approach to protecting the heart during surgery varies based on the specific operation and the surgeon's preferences, del Nido cardioplegia, initially successful in children, is gaining traction as an alternative to the traditional blood cardioplegia in adult cardiac procedures. Aim This investigation comparatively analysed the early postoperative consequences in adult patients undergoing isolated coronary artery bypass grafting, contrasting the application of del Nido cardioplegia with conventional warm blood cardioplegia techniques. Methods Randomised controlled clinical research was conducted to compare the efficacy of antegrade del Nido (DNC) and intermittent warm blood cardioplegia (IWBC) in safeguarding myocardial function …
