Behavioral therapies are considered best practices in the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) and used as first-line approaches for SUDs without FDA-approved pharmacotherapies. Decades of research on the neuroscience of drug reward and addiction have informed the development of current leading behavioral therapies that, while differing in focus and technique, have in common the overarching goal of shifting reward responding away from drug and toward natural non-drug rewards. This review begins by describing key neurobiological processes of reward in addiction, followed by a description of how various behavioral therapies address specific reward processes. Based on this review, a conceptual …

Objective: Chronic stress adversely affects mental and physical well-being. However, health outcomes vary among people experiencing the same stressor. Individual differences in physical and emotional well-being may depend on mitochondrial biology, as energy production is crucial for stress regulation. This study investigated whether mitochondrial respiratory capacity corresponds to individual differences in dementia spousal caregivers' mental and physical health.
Methods: Spousal caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias ( N = 102, mean age = 71, 78% female, 83% White) provided peripheral blood samples and completed self-report questionnaires on quality of life, caregiver burden, and a 7-day affect scale. …

Genome-wide association studies of human personality have been carried out, but transcription of the whole genome has not been studied in relation to personality in humans. We collected genome-wide expression profiles of adults to characterize the regulation of expression and function in genes related to human personality. We devised an innovative multi-omic approach to network analysis to identify the key control elements and interactions in multi-modular networks. We identified sets of transcribed genes that were co-expressed in specific brain regions with genes known to be associated with personality. Then we identified the minimum networks for the co-localized genes using bioinformatic …

Metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD) is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic mutations in the ARSA (Arylsulfatase A) gene. With the advent of presymptomatic diagnosis and the availability of therapies with a narrow window for intervention, it is critical to define a standardized approach to diagnosis, presymptomatic monitoring, and clinical care. To meet the needs of the MLD community, a panel of MLD experts was established to develop disease-specific guidelines based on healthcare resources in the United States. This group developed a consensus opinion for best-practice recommendations, as follows: (i) Diagnosis should include both genetic and biochemical testing; (ii) …

Osteocytes are embedded in lacunae and connected by canaliculi (lacuno-canalicular network, LCN). Bones from mice with X-linked hypophosphatemia (Hyp), which have impaired production of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25D) and hypophosphatemia, have abnormal LCN structure that is improved by treatment with 1,25D or an anti-FGF23 targeting antibody, supporting roles for 1,25D and phosphate in regulating LCN remodeling. Bones from mice lacking the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in osteocytes (Vdrf/f;Dmp1Cre+) and mice lacking the sodium phosphate transporter 2a (Npt2aKO), which have low serum phosphate with high serum 1,25D, have impaired LCN organization, demonstrating that osteocyte-specific actions of 1,25D and hypophosphatemia regulate LCN …

Background: Wounds that fail to proceed through the normal healing process are referred to as chronic wounds, also known as ulcers. Chronic wounds have immeasurable biological, psychological, social, and economic effects, bringing tremendous challenges for patients, doctors, healthcare providers, and healthcare systems.
Discussion: This condition is associated with a variety of comorbidities and complex etiologies. The global incidence of chronic wounds is expected to increase with longer life expectancy. Thus, a holistic approach is necessary, such as proper wound management, proper control of comorbidities, and provision of adequate nutrition, including vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D is an essential pro-hormone for …

Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15-90. Deficits in memory performance have been linked to a wide range of neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions. While many studies have assessed the memory impacts of individual conditions, this study considers a broader perspective by evaluating how memory recall is differentially associated with nine common neuropsychiatric conditions using data drawn from 55 international studies, aggregating 15,883 unique participants aged 15–90. The effects of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, stroke, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder on immediate, short-, and long-delay verbal learning and memory (VLM) scores were estimated relative to matched healthy individuals. Background
We sought to understand well-being from the perspectives of residents in a family medicine residency program and to assess the residents’ opinions on implementing “Reflection Rounds” (RR) to promote wellness and combat burnout through self-reflection. These aims were achieved through descriptive qualitative analysis of a focus group of family medicine residents.
Methods
Participation was voluntary and open to all 45 residents in the program. The final participant sample consisted of 14 residents who shared similar characteristics, including level of training and being exposed to similar training stressors. Both a priori and open coding were used for this analysis.

Background
In 2020, the global COVID-19 pandemic caused educational disruptions to many medical students nationally. Societal and hospital guidelines, including social distancing protocols, resulted in the cancellation or postponement of many elective procedures. A shortage in personal protective equipment also contributed to restrictions in clinical experiences for trainees. The purpose of this study was to determine resident-perceived preparedness in core clinical competencies and evaluate the disruptions to core clerkships.
Methods
A survey was developed to assess self-perceptions of clinical competencies and disruptions to core clerkship experiences. It was distributed to 63 incoming psychiatric residents who were matched to training programs …

Lifestyle Medicine For The Health Care Worker, Workplace, And Community Well-Being: A Butterfly Effect, Karina Doucet, Nicholas D'Angelo
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Burnout is a prevalent and expensive problem in the US, and the National Plan For Health Workforce Well-Being included a goal to institutionalize well-being as a long-term value. Lifestyle Medicine (LM), an evidence-based practice using behavioral interventions to treat, prevent, and reverse certain chronic conditions, can achieve this goal. Implementing small changes in the workplace that support lifestyle medicine has a butterfly effect on both workplace and community well-being. Furthermore, the health of health care workers (HCWs) and patients improves, and health care costs decrease. This can be done with LM wellness programs or LM training for HCWs. LM wellness …

Introduction: The article assumes the biopsychosocial model of disability and refers, inter alia, to the assumptions of the concept of empowerment, which recognizes the fact that practicing sports by people with disabilities creates favorable conditions for strengthening resources and developing skills. An attempt was made to develop a model that verifies the moderating importance of mental resilience in the aspect of experiencing a sense of effectiveness and life satisfaction in sportspeople with mobility impairment. Material and method: The research conducted in an encrypted online manner involved 58 people (31 able-bodied sportspeople and 27 sportspeople with physical disabilities). The following tools …

Effects Of Physical Activity On Self-Efficacy Of Patients With Bronchial Asthma, Carolin Schulze
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Introduction: Due to higher exposures to fine dust, increased smoking and prevalence of obesity and stress, an increase in the diagnosis of bronchial asthma can be expected, which requires adequate, scientifically tested, alternative therapy methods. The current study investigated the effects of regular physical training on general and disease-specific self-efficacy. Materials and Methods: Overall 82 participants with mild to moderate medicated asthma (63% female, mean age = 41.88 ± 10.43 years) took part in the study. They were randomly divided into three groups: (1) no intervention, (2) progressive muscle relaxation and (3) physical activity intervention. Intervention lasted ten weeks with …

How can short-lived molecules selectively maintain the potentiation of activated synapses to sustain long-term memory? Here, we find kidney and brain expressed adaptor protein (KIBRA), a postsynaptic scaffolding protein genetically linked to human memory performance, complexes with protein kinase Mzeta (PKMζ), anchoring the kinase's potentiating action to maintain late-phase long-term potentiation (late-LTP) at activated synapses. Two structurally distinct antagonists of KIBRA-PKMζ dimerization disrupt established late-LTP and long-term spatial memory, yet neither measurably affects basal synaptic transmission. Neither antagonist affects PKMζ-independent LTP or memory that are maintained by compensating PKCs in ζ-knockout mice; thus, both agents require PKMζ for their effect. …

Introduction: Observing parents’ body-focused behaviours during middle childhood is one of the initial ways in which children model their perceptions of pro-health attitudes and their connection to physical attractiveness. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between parents' health behaviours, their appearance, and the perceptions of adult body types (skinny, medium, obese) by their five-year-old children. Moreover, the role of gender in the above relationship for both children and parents was also examined. Materials and methods: This study participants were 680 families with five-year-old children (330 girls). Participation was limited to the moth-er-father-child triad. Detection of BRCA1/2 gene mutations opens the door for breast cancer prevention; however, many high-risk individuals are not screened until after their first cancer diagnosis. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated its BRCA1/2 screening recommendations in 2019. This study explores provider awareness of this update and attitudes towards BRCA1/2 genetic testing. A survey was sent to Obstetrics/ Gynecology (Ob/Gyn), Internal Medicine (IM), and Family Medicine (FM) providers at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals (TJUH). 66% of responders felt familiar with BRCA1/2 screening guidelines, and 38% were aware of the 2019 USPSTF update. Ob/Gyn providers were more familiar with …
