Telehealth And Its Impact On The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Melissa N. Toulios
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) is a growing epidemic that affects millions of people throughout the world. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has created many new challenges, including access to health care for treatment of chronic diseases, such as diabetes (Robson & Hosseinzadeh, 2021). Telehealth has offered a promising approach to improve the management of diabetes(Bellman, 2021). People with diabetes are less likely to manage their diabetes through the usual care because of risk of contracting COVID-19 (CDC, 2022). The purpose of this EBP project was to evaluate the effectiveness of T2DM management through a telehealth approach. This project has addressed …

Evaluating The Impact Of Routine Enteral Iron Fortification On Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis In Premature Infants, Matthew Van Ormer
Evaluating The Impact Of Routine Enteral Iron Fortification On Gastrointestinal Dysbiosis In Premature Infants, Matthew Van Ormer
Theses & Dissertations
The gastrointestinal microbiome in preterm infants bears significant influence on optimal outcomes – dysbiosis is shown to substantially increase the risk of the life-threatening necrotizing enterocolitis, whereas optimal microbiome composition improves nutrient digestion and immune function. Iron is a vital nutrient especially during the perinatal window of rapid hemoglobin production, tissue growth, and foundational neurological development. However, excess colonic iron exhibits potent oxidation capacity and alters the competitive environment of microbes – potentially facilitating the proliferation of pathological bacterial strains in the gut. Of note, breastfed preterm infants routinely receive iron fortification starting at 14 days of life and are …
Chest Wall Injury Pain With Movement, Lindsey Cavlovic
Chest Wall Injury Pain With Movement, Lindsey Cavlovic
Theses & Dissertations
Rib fractures are the most common injury in patients who sustain trauma to the chest wall. These patients often report exacerbated pain severity with deep breathing, coughing, and performing movements of the upper body. Clinical experience in treating these patients shows that patients usually avoid movement due to increased pain severity. Most pain scores from patients with chest wall injuries are assessed while the patient lies comfortably in bed. Although pain is the primary complaint of patients with chest wall injury, the assessment of this pain is likely under-represented, given that these patients remain inactive due to the pain that …

The Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson in June 2022 reversed precedent which had previously protected abortion prior to fetal viability as a universal right within the United States. This decision almost immediately led to abortion restrictions across 25 states. The resulting lack of access to abortion care for millions of pregnant people will have profound physical and mental health consequences, the full effects of which will not be realized for years to come. Approximately 1 in 5 women access abortions in the U.S. each year. These women are diverse and represent all American groups. The Supreme court decision, …

Immigration Status And Household Income As Predictors Of Childhood Obesity, Bhaumik Patel, Jeffery Powers
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
Childhood obesity rates have been on a remarkably steep rise in recent years. According to recent literature, the rate in the United States alone has more than doubled compared to other regions in the world such as Australia, Canada and Europe1,2 . Especially in the African immigrant community, there has been speculation of a higher prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States3 . This warranted further investigation into demographic factors impacting childhood obesity rates and their subsequent consequences with other clinical diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The CDC reports that in 2011-2014, among individuals ages 2 to …
The Effect Of Perceived Weight Status And Bmi On Food Attitudes And Food Relationships, Sahil Patel, Ryan Gericke, Jaime Dougherty, Adarsh Gupta
The Effect Of Perceived Weight Status And Bmi On Food Attitudes And Food Relationships, Sahil Patel, Ryan Gericke, Jaime Dougherty, Adarsh Gupta
Rowan-Virtua Research Day
The findings of this study have shed light on the intricate relationship that exists between perceived weight status from a “non-obese/obese” perspective and attitudes towards food and the overconsumption of particular food items. Participants who perceived their weight status as “obese” despite having a calculated BMI below the CDC threshold and classification for “obesity” had poorer relationships with food, consumption behaviors, and on average consumed food items that were detrimental to overall health. Comprehending a patient’s weight status perception and conducting a thorough history of their food intake could play a crucial role in addressing the patient’s overall health and …

Although midlobular hepatocytes in zone 2 are a recently identified cellular source for liver homeostasis and regeneration, these cells have not been exclusively fate mapped. We generated an Igfbp2-CreER knockin strain that specifically labels midlobular hepatocytes. During homeostasis over 1 year, zone 2 hepatocytes increased in abundance from occupying 21%-41% of the lobular area. After either pericentral injury with carbon tetrachloride or periportal injury with 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC), IGFBP2+ cells replenished lost hepatocytes in zones 3 and 1, respectively. IGFBP2+ cells also preferentially contributed to regeneration after 70% partial hepatectomy, as well as liver growth during pregnancy. Because IGFBP2 labeling increased …

Cancer-related alterations of the p53 tetramerization domain (TD) abrogate wild-type (WT) p53 function. They result in a protein that preferentially forms monomers or dimers, which are also normal p53 states under basal cellular conditions. However, their physiologic relevance is not well understood. We have established in vivo models for monomeric and dimeric p53, which model Li-Fraumeni syndrome patients with germline p53 TD alterations. p53 monomers are inactive forms of the protein. Unexpectedly, p53 dimers conferred some tumor suppression that is not mediated by canonical WT p53 activities. p53 dimers upregulate the PPAR pathway. These activities are associated with lower prevalence …
