Introduction. Diabetes mellitus (DM) patients have a higher risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection, including the risk of drug- resistant (DR)-TB infection, compared to those without DM. Data on the characteristics of pulmonary DR-TB with DM in Indonesia are still very limited. The management of pulmonary DR-TB with DM should consider multiple factors, such as drug interactions between DM medication and anti-TB drugs, as well as potential exacerbation of DM complications by anti-TB drugs side effects. Effective management of pulmonary DR-TB patients with DM will improve treatment outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pulmonary DR-TB …

Journal of General - Procedural Dermatology and Venereology Indonesia

Background: Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that is required daily by the body. Deficiency in vitamin D is experienced by most of the world's population. Vitamin D plays a role in maintaining the skin barrier by regulating keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation, promoting filaggrin formation, and intraepidermal lipids.

Discussion: The vital role of vitamin D, non-compliance with supplement consumption, and poor nutritional status of adult patients and the elderly with deficiency and insufficiency of vitamin D encourage studies regarding vitamin D delivery via the transdermal route. The lipophilicity of vitamin D allows it to penetrate through the skin barrier. …

Anti-angiogenic therapy is an established method for the treatment of several cancers and vascular-related diseases. Most of the agents employed target the vascular endothelial growth factor A, the major cytokine stimulating angiogenesis. However, the efficacy of these treatments is limited by the onset of drug resistance. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to better understand the mechanisms that regulate angiogenesis and the microenvironmental cues that play significant role and influence patient treatment and outcome. In this context, here we review the importance of the three basement membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs), namely perlecan, agrin and collagen XVIII. These HSPGs are …

Lifestyle Medicine For The Health Care Worker, Workplace, And Community Well-Being: A Butterfly Effect, Karina Doucet, Nicholas D'Angelo

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Burnout is a prevalent and expensive problem in the US, and the National Plan For Health Workforce Well-Being included a goal to institutionalize well-being as a long-term value. Lifestyle Medicine (LM), an evidence-based practice using behavioral interventions to treat, prevent, and reverse certain chronic conditions, can achieve this goal. Implementing small changes in the workplace that support lifestyle medicine has a butterfly effect on both workplace and community well-being. Furthermore, the health of health care workers (HCWs) and patients improves, and health care costs decrease. This can be done with LM wellness programs or LM training for HCWs. LM wellness …

Declined memory is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Experiments in rodents and human postmortem studies suggest that serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) plays a role in memory, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we investigate the role of 5-HT 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) in regulating memory. Transgenic mice expressing a humanized HTR2C mutation exhibit impaired plasticity of hippocampal ventral CA1 (vCA1) neurons and reduced memory. Further, 5-HT neurons project to and synapse onto vCA1 neurons. Disruption of 5-HT synthesis in vCA1-projecting neurons or deletion of 5-HT2CRs in the vCA1 impairs neural plasticity and memory. We show that a selective 5-HT2CR agonist, …

Changes In Lean Body Mass With Glucagon-Like Peptide-1-Based Therapies And Mitigation Strategies, Ian J. Neeland

Faculty Scholarship

Weight loss induced by glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R)/glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor agonists is coming closer to the magnitudes achieved with surgery. However, with greater weight loss there is concern about potential side effects on muscle quantity (mass), health and function. There is heterogeneity in the reported effects of GLP-1-based therapies on lean mass changes in clinical trials: in some studies, reductions in lean mass range between 40% and 60% as a proportion of total weight lost, while other studies show lean mass reductions of approximately 15% or less of total weight lost. There …

The morphology of the female reproductive tract in non-avian reptiles varies between species, corresponding to a broad range of reproductive modes and providing valuable insight to comparative investigations of reproductive anatomy. However, reproductive studies in reptilian models, such as the brown anole studied here, have historically relied on histological methods to understand the anatomy. While these methods are highly effective for characterizing the cell types present in each organ, histological methods lose the 3D relationships between images and leave the …
