The Prevalence Of Behavioural Risk Factors Associated With Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Ann M. Callaghan
The Prevalence Of Behavioural Risk Factors Associated With Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Ann M. Callaghan
Theses : Honours
Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS) is a major cause of death in the first year of life. In Western Australia (WA), two infants in every thousand live births die from SIDS each year. The aim of this study was to ascertain the prevalence in WA of three risk factors which have been associated with SIDS, namely prone lying, maternal smoking and lack of breast feeding. In addition the study sought to determine the significant influences that encourage change in infant care practices by parents. The study obtained information from child health nurses and midwives regarding the advice they provide on …

The Biomechanical Analysis Of Two Types Of Place Kicks: The Toe And Instep Kicks, Kaylynn Albers
Masters Theses
This study described the biomechanical differences between two styles of the place kick; the toe kick and instep kick. The biomechanical variables included joint angles, velocities, and displacements. Five high school age subjects kicked five trials of the toe kick and five trials of the instep kick at both 20 and 35 yards. The place kicks were filmed with a high speed camera, digitized and analyzed with peak 4.2 computer software.
The findings for joint angles were consistent with those found in the literature. The velocity for the kicking foot and the ball were lower in this study than found …

Signal Processing With Neural Networks, Pero Smrzlic
Signal Processing With Neural Networks, Pero Smrzlic
Masters Theses
In this study, we introduce the Adaptive Back Propagation (ABP) learning algorithm, computationally superior to the standard Back Propagation. The ABP is based on the new activation function, with its corresponding adaptive learning parameter. By using the combination of computer simulations and analysis in the domain of activation function, the Method of One Hidden layer was developed for the effective utilization of units in one-hidden layer networks. A parallel version of the ABP was designed and implemented on a nCUBE-2 supercomputer with 128 processors.
The simulation results suggested a strong correlation between frequency of signals and the role of hidden …

Oral Contraceptives And Reproductive Cancers: Weighing The Risks And Benefits, Ann L. Coker, Susan Harlap, Judith A. Fortney
CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles
The hypothetical incidence of reproductive cancers resulting from oral contraceptive use was estimated in several models comparing the cumulative lifetime incidence of cancer of the breast, cervix, ovary and endometrium expected in pill users with the incidence expected in nonusers. The potential number of cancer-free days that would be gained or lost by pill users was com- pared with similar estimates among nonusers. If five years or more of pill use were associated with a 20% increase in the risk of breast cancerbeing diagnosed before age 50, a 20% increase in cervical cancer risk and a 50% reduction in the …

Comparison Of Primiparous Women's Expected And Experienced Pain In Labour, Shelagh Lawrence
Comparison Of Primiparous Women's Expected And Experienced Pain In Labour, Shelagh Lawrence
Theses : Honours
Pain is a subjective phenomenon and is, in varying degrees, an inherent part of the childbirth experience. However, most Western societies view suffering as unacceptable and as such, regard analgesia as a necessity. Many women do not anticipate the intensity of pain experienced in childbirth and are, therefore, not ready to manage this amount of pain when it occurs. This prospective study compared the expected and experienced labour pain of 99 primiparous women, aged 17-40 years. The relationship between expected and experienced pain and acceptance of pregnancy; identification with the motherhood role; relationship with mother; relationship with husband/partner; preparation for …

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A multifactorial analysis of morphological findings was performed on 153 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The aim of the study was to utilize histological criteria to discriminate between MTC associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) and that associated with the inherited MTC only syndrome. The presence of fusiform cells associated with several other markers seemed to he more predictive of MEN 2A. A comparison of inherited MTC only and sporadic MTC only showed fusiform cells to be significantly less common in inherited MTC only. These results suggest that the inherited MTC only syndrome is a distinct …
Prospective Screening In Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, Britt Skogseid, Kjell Oberg
Prospective Screening In Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, Britt Skogseid, Kjell Oberg
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
To assess the age of clinically detectable onset of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1), 88 members of four families were invited to participate in a ten-year biochemical screening program. Evidence for clinically detectable MEN 1 was found in adolescence. Pancreatic endocrine dysfunction constituted the presenting lesion in a majority of these individuals. The age at diagnosis of pancreatic endocrine tumors averaged 25 years and was lowered by almost two decades by prospective investigation. Furthermore, the penetrance of the pancreatic endocrine and parathyroid lesions equaled the penetrance found in autopsy studies. The use of a standardized meal stimulation test …

Practical Guidelines For Dna-Based Testing In Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, Catharina Larsson, Magnus Nordenskjold, Britt Skogseid, Kjell Oberg
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is an autosomal dominant predisposition to neoplastic lesions of the parathyroid glands, the neuroendocrine pancreas, and the anterior pituitary gland. The predisposing genetic defect was localized to the long arm of chromosome 11 by genetic linkage analysis in three affected families. By analyzing six MEN 1 families with 14 DNA marker systems located close to the MEN 1 gene, we have developed a method to identify carriers of the MEN 1 predisposition. We describe practical aspects of such DNA-based diagnostic procedures.

Hyperparathyroidism With Normal Albumin-Corrected Total Calcium In Patients With Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1, J. J. Shepherd, Bin Tean Teh, V. Parameswaran, R. David
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In the largest reported family of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1), hyperparathyroidism was expressed at first screening in 33 patients by elevation of ionized calcium (IC) (30 cases) or parathyroid hormone (three cases) without elevation of albumin-corrected total calcium (ACTC). Three of these 33 patients have shown a progressive rise in IC and later an elevation of ACTC. However, the age distribution suggests that in others the level of IC may remain stable at a minimally elevated level throughout life with ACTC remaining normal except for transient rises at the times of intercurrent illness or surgical …
Extracellular Ca2+ Sensing In C-Cells And Parathyroid Cells, Hans Scherubl, Maria Luisa Brandi, Jurgen Hescheler
Extracellular Ca2+ Sensing In C-Cells And Parathyroid Cells, Hans Scherubl, Maria Luisa Brandi, Jurgen Hescheler
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
An essential function of C-cells and parathyroid cells is to monitor the extracellular Ca2+ concentration. The Ca2+-dependent secretion of calcitonin (CT) and parathyroid hormone is known to be mediated by corresponding changes in the intracellular Ca2+ concentration. To address the question of whether Ca2+ influx through voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels couples the extracellular to the intracellular Ca2+, we applied the patch clamp technique to C-cells of the rMTC 44-2 cell line and to parathyroid cells of the PT-r cell line. The rMTC cells displayed dihydropyridine-sensitive, voltage-dependent, high-threshold Ca2+ channels which allowed ion …

Soft Tissue Changes Of The Upper Lip Following Isolated Le Fort I Osteotomies, Kendall E. James
Soft Tissue Changes Of The Upper Lip Following Isolated Le Fort I Osteotomies, Kendall E. James
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pre-operative (T-1) and post-operative (T-3) radiographs were obtained and traced for fifty-one non-growing patients who had undergone isolated Le Fort I osteotomies. These tracings were then digitized with the results arranged in a data file and subjected to statistical analysis. The purpose of this study was to establish ratios for certain hard to soft tissue movements that could be used to aid the clinician in post-surgical soft tissue profile prediction. The results showed that even though a large sample was used, individual patient variability remained high particularly in the horizontal directions. Most ratios found in this study were consistent with …

Condylar Angulations As Related To Submental-Vertex Radiographs, Jady L. Chiakowsky
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pretreatment submental-vertex radiographs were obtained for 637 adolescent patients (307 males, 330 females) who had presented themselves for orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine the relationship between condylar angulations and depth of cut with the variables: age, sex, and race, and (2) establish normative values for the categories studied. The results indicated that no significant differences existed between the condylar angulations for the variables measured. However, significant differences did exist between the depth of cut for the variables measured and there was significant interaction between age and race with respect to the depth of cut. …

Prostaglandin G/H synthase (PGG/HS) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandins and thromboxanes. We screened a human lung fibroblast cDNA library with an ovine PGG/HS cDNA and isolated a 2.3-kilobase clone (HCO-T9). Sequence analysis of this clone showed that (a) it contained the entire translated region of PGG/HS and (b) it displayed an in-frame splicing of the last 111 base pairs encoded by exon 9, which resulted in the elimination of the N-glycosylation site at residue 409. Polymerase chain reaction amplification with specific oligonucleotides of reverse-transcribed mRNA from diverse human tissues and cultured cells yielded …
The Effects Of Orthopaedic Surgery And Dorsal Rhizotomy On Selected Gait Characteristics Of Cerebral Palsy Children, Danielle M. Lanoue
The Effects Of Orthopaedic Surgery And Dorsal Rhizotomy On Selected Gait Characteristics Of Cerebral Palsy Children, Danielle M. Lanoue
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Surgical management of cerebral palsy children typically involves multiple orthopaedic surgeries in order to achieve and maintain the maximum functional level of ambulation. Orthopaedic intervention to address lower extremity spasticity often includes: muscle lengthenings, muscle releases and tendon transfers. The most recent advance in management of lower extremity spasticity has been through a neurosurgical approach; selective dorsal rhizotomy. The long term effects of dorsal rhizotomy are still being investigated. Through the use of instrumented gait analysis, the specific objective results of both of these types of surgeries can be investigated. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the …
