Percutaneous Transfemoral Renal Artery Occlusion In The Management Of Advanced Renal Carcinoma, Douglas E. Johnson Jun 1979

Percutaneous Transfemoral Renal Artery Occlusion In The Management Of Advanced Renal Carcinoma, Douglas E. Johnson

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report describes renal artery occlusion as a therapeutic alternative to nephrectomy and chemotherapy in treating patients with metastatic renal carcinoma. Using a combination of Gelfoam and the Gianturco stainless steel coil, embolization was performed on 75 patients at the University of Texas System Cancer Center, M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute with promising results. Its use is recommended 1) to facilitate surgical removal of large and difficult tumors, 2) to control local symptoms (pain, bleeding, etc), and 3) as part of a planned therapeutic program consisting of infarction, nephrectomy and progestins for patients with minimal to moderate metastatic disease.

An Ischemic Infarct In Medulla And Cervical Cord, Ezzatollah Shivapour, Gilbert B. Solitare Dec 1978

An Ischemic Infarct In Medulla And Cervical Cord, Ezzatollah Shivapour, Gilbert B. Solitare

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This report documents an unusual case of an occlusion of the anterior spinal artery of the medulla oblongata. The patient presented with involvement of the left accessory nerve and weakness of ipsilateral extremities. The diagnosis of an ischemic infarct in the distribution of the left proximal portion of the anterior spinal artery was made. Bulbar weakness, quadriplegia, and respiratory arrest developed. Postmortem examination, 23 days after onset, revealed an old infarct in the medulla which appeared as a more recent hemorrhagic infarct throughout the cervical cord.

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography At Henry Ford Hospital: 1972-1977, Bernard M. Schuman, Kian H. Wong, R. Salimi, A. N. Adham

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Between 7972 and /977, 440 patients underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (FRCP) at Henry Ford Hospital. The procedure was found to be most useful for identifying the site and nature of an extrahepatic obstruction, the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, and the preoperative evaluation of chronic pancreatitis. One death occurred as a result of cholangitis in a patient with cancer of the pancreas. Review of the data has led us to refine our indications for FRCP. It has been shown to be a valuable technique with a low incidence of complications in evaluating pancreaticobiliary disease. Based on our study, it would be …

Histocompatibility Testing In Renal Transplantation, Hajime Hayashi, Jay B. Hunter Sep 1978

Histocompatibility Testing In Renal Transplantation, Hajime Hayashi, Jay B. Hunter

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

The effect of HLA matching and other aspects of histocompatibility on renal graft survival were analyzed in 144 patients who received renal transplants at Henry Ford Hospital during the past ten years. Living related transplants with one haplotype match or better demonstrated a higher graft survival rate (at least 88%) at one year than the better matched cadaveric transplant. In cadaveric transplants, the group with fewer than two mismatched antigens appeared to have a higher graft survival rate than those with more than two. The patient population was not large enough to determine the effect of preformed antibodies, ABO grouping, …

What's New In Crohn's Disease Treatment, Francis J. Owens Jun 1978

What's New In Crohn's Disease Treatment, Francis J. Owens

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Progress in the management of Crohn's disease is limited by our inability to compare different patients. Two methods of evaluating the severity of disease have recently been published. Of these, the National Cooperative Crohn's Disease Study (NCCDS) method has been utilized in a study reported on at several national meetings but still in progress. Antibiotics in intensive prolonged dosage, e.g. ampicillin, 500 mg qid for several months, have recently been reported to benefit greater than 90% of patients not responding to conventional therapy. Metronidazole and dapsone continue to be mentioned in letters to journals. Sulfasalazine has been found useful in …

Legionnaires' Disease: Description Of A Sporadic Case, Louis D. Saravolatz, Gene Tilchen

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

This first case of Legionnaires' disease seen at Henry Ford Hospital is described. A previously healthy 72-year-old man developed progressive pneumonia in September, 1977; it was unresponsive to treatment with cephalothin. However, he rapidly recovered when the treatment was changed to oral erythromycin. Diagnosis was established by serologic studies done at the Center for Disease Control. This pneumonia occurred in a sporadic form with no evidence of secondary cases.

The Effect Of 72 Consecutive Hours In The Coronary Care Unit On The Night Sleep Of 10 Patients Age 65 And Older, Eugenia J. Creason Dec 1977

The Effect Of 72 Consecutive Hours In The Coronary Care Unit On The Night Sleep Of 10 Patients Age 65 And Older, Eugenia J. Creason

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The prevalence of heart disease in the population over age 65 has contributed to the increasing number of aged patients hospitalized in critical care units (Gsell, 1977). Changes which occur in the process of aging and in cardiac disease should be considered when providing nursing care to these patients. A disturbance in the sleep wakefulness cycle resulting in a decrease of restorative sleep is a major change occurring at age 65 and after (Feinberg, 1967). The cardiac patient finds that it takes longer to go to sleep, and then awakens often during the night (Karacan et al., 1969).
