The Immunology Of Transplantation, J. R. Serie
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
A number of life-threatening diseases, such as kidney failure, diabetes, and certain kinds of coronary heart disease, can be cured by organ transplantation. However, despite decades of research, graft rejection remains a very real threat to the organ transplant recipient. In attempting to develop methods that interfere with the graft rejection process, scientists have uncovered a remarkably complex system of cellular interactions that allows the total destruction of a transplanted organ while leaving the recipient's own organs untouched. This ability to distinguish self from non-self is achieved through intercellular communication involving cell-to-cell contact and the release of a number of …

Scintigraphy With 1-131 Mibg As An Aid To The Treatment Of Pheochromocytomas In Patients With The Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2 Syndromes, James C. Sisson, Brahm Shapiro, William H. Beierwaltes
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We reviewed the scintigraphic images made after injections of 1-131 metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) or 1-123 MIBG in patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types 2A and 2B. The information we obtained was applied to three questions about the treatment of pheochromocytoma in patients affected with these syndromes. Our first question "When should adrenal gland(s) be removed?" was not directly answered. However, adrenalectomy generally should not be contemplated unless distinct abnormalities are present in the scintigraphic images. With experience it may be possible to approximate, from the stage of pheochromocytoma depicted by scintigraphy, how many years will elapse before symptoms or hypertension …

Developing An Integrated Natural Language Database For Gastrointestinal Disease, Peter J. Feczko, Laurens V. Ackerman, Robert D. Halpert, Stuart M. Simms
Developing An Integrated Natural Language Database For Gastrointestinal Disease, Peter J. Feczko, Laurens V. Ackerman, Robert D. Halpert, Stuart M. Simms
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Using a mainframe computer connected to the Henry Ford Hospital computer network, we developed a database for gastrointestinal disease which includes data from radiologic and endoscopic gastrointestinal examinations, along with corresponding pathologic diagnosis. Because of the large volume of procedures in our practice, we developed several unique features for our system. The user enters data by responding to a series of question-and-answer sets constructed by the clinical staff, who do not have experience in computer programming. Data is stored in a hierarchical format using natural language. Boolean logic is used to retrieve data so that different procedures can be correlated …

Distributed Computing In A Hospital Environment, Steven R. Lund, Laurens V. Ackerman, James B. Martin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Obtaining appropriate information in a timely fashion in medical practice has always been a burden for the practitioner. In a large hospital which undertakes major computer projects, this burden is intensified because information is not always available in a form directly usable by the physician or support personnel; it is now accumulated on diverse magnetic media where it is moved and processed as electronic pulses. This paper describes a solution which freely allows continued automation at different rates throughout a large hospital while expediting the movement of information where it is needed in a form understandable by the recipient.

Development Of A Nephrology And Hypertension Information System, Francis Dumler, Gerard Zasuwa, Nathan W. Levin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This article describes our experience in the development and implementation of a computerized information system specifically designed for a Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. Specific issues related to planning and implementation are discussed, and potential pitfalls in setting up such a system are addressed. The combination of a mainframe and a miniframe as integral parts of the system and the development of peripheral support in specific applications using a personal microcomputer are also described. The important area of user/computer interface and of user motivation is discussed in the light of the experience acquired while implementing the current system.

Cardiac Papillary Fibroelastoma: A Source Of Coronary Artery Emboli And Myocardial Infarction, Gerald Fine, Shoba R. Pai
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas, although generally small and asymptomatic, have been suspected of being responsible for cerebral accidents, angina, and sudden death. The diagnosis of tumor embolization, considered in a number of cases, has been based on circumstantial evidence in all instances except for one case of sudden death due to embolism to the left anterior descending coronary artery. In all other cases, angina and sudden death have been related to a ball valve-type obstruction of a coronary ostium by tumor. The present case documents tumor embolism to peripheral right coronary arteries with associated, clinically silent myocardial changes.

A Comparison Of Enamel Detachments After Debonding Between Unitek's "Dynalok" Bracket And A Foil-Mesh Bracket: A Scanning Electron Microscope Study, Robert E. Meister
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The intent of this paper was to: 1. Evaluate the mode of adhesive failure when debonding both flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets. 2. Evaluate the bracket bases for enamel detachments. 3. Measure the enamel detachments.
After preforming shear test on flexible and rigid base orthodontic brackets mounted to extracted human teeth it was determined that failure occurred at the enamel/adhesive interface 30% of the time, at the bracket/adhesive interface 10% of the time and a combination of these 60% of the time for both groups.
Five brackets from each group were evaluated for enamel detachments using energy dispersive x-ray …

Temporomandibular Joint Relations Of Bone And Lateral Pterygoid Muscle : A Computerized Tomography Study, Duane K. Yamashiro
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study utilized the imaging technique of computerized tomography (CT). Scans taken with a GE CT/N 8800 scanner of an adult cadaver and a 12-patient group were obtained through the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry, TMJ Department, and Loma Linda University Medical Center, Department of Neuroradiology.
The lateral scout image and a lateral cephalogram of the cadaver were compared using six angular measurements for facial type from Ricketts' Cephalometric Analysis. The six measurements, Maxillary Depth, Facial Depth, Mandibular Arc, Mandibular Plane, Lower Face Height and Facial Axis, were found to be similar. This allowed the investigator to rely exclusively …
Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen
Third Molar Eruption Prediction, Michael L. Jacobsen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The diagnosis and treatment of third molars has often been cited as a special problem to the orthodontist. If the prognosis of third molars could be determined, orthodontic treatment could progress on a more positive basis.
This study was designed to provide a method of deciding whether developing third molars will erupt or become impacted.
Records from 130 orthodontically treated cases of Dr. Fredsall8 were studied. Several factors were evaluated and measured using the patients' cephalometric radiographs.
The actual fate of the third molars were recorded in the hope it could be used to predict what to expect from …
How Registered Nurses In Skilled Nursing Facilities Rate The Importance Of And The Frequency Engaged In Specific Nursing Behaviors Related To Their Role, Christine Anne Heine
How Registered Nurses In Skilled Nursing Facilities Rate The Importance Of And The Frequency Engaged In Specific Nursing Behaviors Related To Their Role, Christine Anne Heine
Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations
Registered nurses in skilled nursing facilities were surveyed using the Six-Dimension Scale of Nursing Performance to determine: (1) how they rated the importance of specific nursing behaviors related to their role, (2) how they rated the frequency engaged in the same specific nursing behaviors related to their role, and (3) if there was a relationship between how they rated the specific nursing behaviors for importance and frequency. There were five subgroups of nursing behaviors: (a) leadership, (b) nursing process, (c) teaching and collaboration, (d) interpersonal relations and communication, and (e) professional development. Registered nurses rated all of the behaviors as …

Neurosonology: An Update, Beatrice L. Madrazo, Manuel Dujovny, Juan Fuentes, Michael A. Sandler, Madelyne Galvin
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Recent technological advances in diagnostic ultrasound have resulted in the development of high-resolution, portable real-time scanners. In neurological ultrasound, these devices have been particularly useful for detecting intracranial hemorrhage in premature infants. Sonography is now being used during neurosurgical procedures to help in localizing masses for resection and biopsy, as well as in the placement of shunt catheters. The applications of neurosonology and our experience with intraoperative neurosonology are reported in this review.
