Prolonging Oxygen Consumption During Preservation Of Canine Kidneys By The Addition Of Continuous Dialysis, Daniel Dall'olmo, Stanley G. Dienst
Prolonging Oxygen Consumption During Preservation Of Canine Kidneys By The Addition Of Continuous Dialysis, Daniel Dall'olmo, Stanley G. Dienst
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Kidneys were preserved by continuous pulsatile perfusion and their metabolic rate monitored by O2 consumption. Experiments were carried out to determine if dialyzing the perfusate to supply metabolic substrates would aid in kidney preservation. A control group was compared against two experimental groups at 25°C. Average preservation time before fall off of oxygen consumption differed for each group: control - 8 hours, dialysis with amino acids - 6 hours, dialysis with amino acids and cofactors - 11 hours. Results indicated that, if suitable concentrations of metabolic substrates and cofactors were used, the preserved kidneys maintained higher levels of O2 consumption …

Immunological Aspects Of Neoplastic Diseases, V. Radhakrishna
Immunological Aspects Of Neoplastic Diseases, V. Radhakrishna
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The immunological approach to neoplastic disease is gaining favor because malignant tumors are associated with immunodeficient states. Mesenchymal tumors have been seen in renal allograft recipients. The discovery of carcinoembryonic antigen, alfafetoprotein and other protein antigens associated with malignant diseases are other factors. Spontaneous regression of malignant neoplasm has been attributed to an effective immunologic process in the host. Identification of tumor specific antigens may explain these spontaneous tumor regressions. It may not be too optimistic to expect tumor vaccine of some sort within the next few years. B.C.G. and other nonspecific immunostimulants are under investigation for treatment of malignant …

Productivity Of The Roll-Streak Method To Perform Anaerobic Bacteriology In The Routine Clinical Laboratory, Thomas R. Neblett
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Data presented are derived from one year of performing routine clinical anaerobic bacteriology by the roll-streak tube method. 826 specimens from 1508 (54.8%) contained anaerobes. 162 specimens were polymicrobic (19.6%) and contained 528 strains of a total of 1051 isolated (50.2 %). 479 blood specimens contained 525 strains of anaerobes. Propionibacterium, considered a contaminant, occurred 209/210 times in blood as the sole isolate. Bacteroides occurred alone or polymicrobically 308 times and comprised 54.7% of the blood isolates and 32.5% of the total anaerobic genera isolated. Clostridium, Peptococcus and Fusobacterium were the next most frequently occurring anaerobes. The roll-streak method is …

Bupivacaine As A Local Anesthetic For Hernia Repair, Joseph L. Ponka, James A. Sapala
Bupivacaine As A Local Anesthetic For Hernia Repair, Joseph L. Ponka, James A. Sapala
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Bupivacaine hydrochloride is a safe, useful local anesthetic agent for repair of groin hernias. Prolonged anesthesia, lasting six hours or longer, was observed In 94 of WO patients. No toxic effects involving the central nervous system were observed using a 0.25% solution with epinephrine. Hypotension and cardiac arrhythmia occurred in one patient. Wound complications, such as hematomas and ecchymosis, were more common with Bupivacaine than when Chlorprocaine was used. However, painstaking hemostasis, which required ligation of even the tiniest blood vessels, reduced the wound complications. As experience is gained in the use of Bupivacaine, complications will be reduced to a …

The articles, all papers done for classes in the university honors program, are divided into three groups. The first group deals with science, especially the area of health care, one of the more practical applications of science in the modern age. The second group consists of three papers done for honor courses in which the major purpose was to expose the student to new areas of consciousness and have them respond orally and verbally to what they read, creative writing. The last group deals with the humanities, literature and religion, two of the more popular fields of the humanities today. …

Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin
Measurement Of Permeability Of The Cell Membrane To Water, Richard Moore, Frederick Thornburgh, Donggyu Jin
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
The water permeability was measured for blood cells from normal subjects and for blood cells from patients with leukemia. The method of measurement of the kinetics of water influx employed a stopped flow apparatus. The method of calculation of results was based on irreversible thermodynamics. The measurements and calculations were both performed with the assistance of a computer. The water permeability of the leukemic cells was decreased from normal, and the values were more variable than normal. Leukemia changes the structure of the cell membrane.

Background: The novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spread rapidly after its identification in December 2019 to cause a global pandemic. The respiratory tract is the primary site of infection, and there is a large range in the severity of respiratory illnesses caused by the virus. Defining molecular and cellular factors for protection from severe disease and death has been a goal to better understand and to predict and mitigate the effects of SARS-CoV-2 and future coronaviruses.
Objective: Despite well-known susceptibilities to respiratory viral infections, respiratory allergy and allergic asthma have not been identified as risk factors …

The Effects Of Immobility On Long Bone Remodelling In The Rhesus Monkey, Charles C. Schock, Frank R. Noyes, Michael M. Crouch, Catharina H. E. Mathews
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Using Frost's method for undecalcified bone sections, long bones of the lower extremities of ten rhesus monkeys were examined following two months' immobilization and compared with thirteen controls. A decrease in appositional rate and in the surface extent of the ossification process were noted in the immobilized animals. No typical change in resorption was noted. The immobilized animals showed a decreased cortical-total area ratio. These findings suggest that a decrease in activity affects bone by depressing functions mediated by the osteoblast without necessarily evoking an Increased remodelling response.

Amikacin was evaluated in vitro against S aureus and a variety of gram negative bacilli. In concentrations of 12.5 μg/ml or less, it suppressed the growth of all organisms except 15% of Proteus mirabilis. Peak serum levels in patients, following a 7.5 mg/kg IM dose, averaged 21 μg/ml at one hour. Most of the drug appeared in the urine during the first six hours after administration. Of six patients receiving an adequate course of treatment, all but one were cured. Treatment in that patient also failed with a subsequent course of gentamicin and carbenicillin and he was cured only by …

Kidney Cortex Lysosomal Acid Proteinase Activity During Induction Of A Protein-Losing Nephropathy With The Aminonucleoside Of Puromycin, Paul D. Bartlett, Laura Katona
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Effects have been studied of induction of aminonucleoside-nephrosis in the rat on kidney cortex lysosomal acid proteinase activity (pH 3.2) and on such activity in the cytosol from which the lysosomes were isolated. In parallel with the onset of the massive proteinuria of the disease process but not preceding this effect, activity in the cytosol fraction was significantly increased. Significantly increased activity in the lysosomal fraction, on the other hand, was not observed until the proteinuria was well-established. Comparative study of the release of acid proteinase activity, from intact lysosomes isolated from normal and from aminonucleoslde-nephrotic rat kidneys, suggest-in the …

The physical principles for determining tissue lipid content In vivo by selective radiation attenuation have been studied and are compared to other methods of body composition analysis. Two penetrating photon beams, each monoenergetic but of differing energies, are simultaneously passed through the low Z components of tissue and the relative beam absorption measured. A mathematical function incorporating the unabsorbed and absorbed photon beam intensities is applied to determine experimentally the relative proportion of fat and lean in the tissue. '"Cd is used as the radioactive source of both xrays and gamma radiation. Results of experiments on low 2 phantom material …

An effective methadone maintenance program must do more than dispense measured doses in a well-organized clinic. It should attempt to effect changes in the patient's personality and coping mechanisms, social situation, and other conditioning factors which maintain his involvement in narcotics.
The Effects Of Progressive Relaxation And Myoelectric Feedback On Respiratory Resistance In Bronchial Asthmatics, Daphne Browne Shah
The Effects Of Progressive Relaxation And Myoelectric Feedback On Respiratory Resistance In Bronchial Asthmatics, Daphne Browne Shah
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
For the individual with bronchial asthma, an asthmatic attack can be a life threatening experience. A theory of bronchial asthma as a conditioned response has been recently proposed by several investigators. It was suggested that this conditioned response may be modified by lowering the arousal level, and as a result, decreasing the asthmatic response.
The problem identified in this exploratory study was to measure the effects of relaxation on the smaller or peripheral airways of a convenience sample of six asthmatic subjects fourteen to seventy years of age. It was hypothesized that an increased degree of total body relaxation would …

Clinical Experience With Radioisotopic Powered Cardiac Pacemakers, Nicholas P. D. Smyth, Tomas Hernandez, Alvin Johnson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Significant increase in the useful lifetime of the implantable cardiac pacemaker has been made possible by the development of a radioisotope power source. This paper reports experience with two models, the AEC-ARCO Nu-5 (fixed rate) and the Medtronic Model 9000 (ventricular inhibited demand). Five of the former models were implanted in 1973, and six of the latter more recently. Both types of units have functioned well.

How Psychotherapy Heals, Jerome D. Frank
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This paper, accompanied by the discussions and the preceding introduction, was delivered May 9, 1974 as part of an anniversary celebration commemorating a half century of existence for the psychiatric unit at Henry Ford Hospital. Established in 1924 by the late Thomas J. Heldt, M.D., as a division of neuropsychiatry in the department of medicine, the unit is generally believed to be the first to be incorporated into a general hospital anywhere. It was - and is - conducted without physical restraints of any kind, without isolation of patients, and without segregation of men and women.
