Investigation Of Four Different Normality Tests In Terms Of Type 1 Error Rate And Power Under Different Distributions, Derya Öztuna, Ati̇lla Hali̇l Elhan, Ersöz Tüccar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: An important aspect of the "description" of a variable is the shape of its distribution, which tells you the frequency of values from different ranges of the variable. Typically, as most of the statistical tests are based on the normality assumption, a researcher is interested in how well the distribution can be approximated by the normal distribution. Unless there are extreme violations of the normality assumptions, approved statistical tests usually provide accurate results. Although simple descriptive statistics can provide some information relevant to this issue, more precise information can be obtained by performing one of the tests of normality …

Ethidium Bromide Spot Test Is A Simple Yet Highly Accurate Method In Determining Dna Concentration, Murat Kasap, Si̇nem Torol, Gülçi̇n Gacar, Fatma Budak

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

A commonly used method to measure the amount of DNA in nucleic acid preparations is to use UV irradiation. However, if the DNA sample contains impurities, measuring UV irradiation is misleading. A quick way to estimate the amount of DNA in such samples is to analyze spot densities created by UV-induced fluorescence emitted by ethidium bromide. The amount of DNA is proportional to the amount of fluorescence. In many references, the spot density analysis is recommended for rough estimation of DNA concentration and is done by visual examination and comparison of the densities of each spot with the densities of …

The Oncocytic Variant Of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma, Reşi̇t Doğan Köseoğlu, Nurper Onuk Fi̇li̇z

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has many subtypes. A rare subtype consisting of papillary projections covered by cells oncocytic in character has been defined in recent years. Oncocytes with characteristic nuclear features of PTC are seen in the thyroid aspiration cytology of this subtype. In the cytological diagnosis, this variant could be confused with other oncocytic lesions of the thyroid. We discuss here the cytological and histopathological features of the oncocytic variant of PTC diagnosed in the aspiration biopsy and thyroid resection material in a 42-year-old female patient.

We have previously identified a family of novel androgen receptor (AR) ligands that, upon binding, enable AR to adopt structures distinct from that observed in the presence of canonical agonists. In this report, we describe the use of these compounds to establish a relationship between AR structure and biological activity with a view to defining a rational approach with which to identify useful selective AR modulators. To this end, we used combinatorial peptide phage display coupled with molecular dynamic structure analysis to identify the surfaces on AR that are exposed specifically in the presence of selected AR ligands. Subsequently, we …

Cancerous Contradictions: The Mis-Regulation Of Human Carcinogens Based On Animal Data, Andrew Knight, Jarrod Bailey, Jonathan Balcombe

Experimentation Collection

The regulation of human exposures to potential carcinogens constitutes society’s most important use of animal carcinogenicity data. However, for environmental contaminants of greatest U.S. concern, we found that in most cases (58.1%; 93/160) the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considered the animal data inadequate to support a classification of probable human carcinogen or noncarcinogen.

The World Health Organisation’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is a leading international authority on carcinogenicity assessments. For chemicals lacking human exposure data (the great majority), IARC classifications of identical chemicals were significantly more conservative than EPA classifications (p

Myelin proteolipid protein (PLP), the major protein of mammalian CNS myelin, is a member of the proteolipid gene family (pgf). It is an evolutionarily conserved polytopic integral membrane protein and a potential autoantigen in multiple sclerosis (MS). To analyze antibody recognition of PLP epitopes in situ, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) specific for different regions of human PLP (50–69, 100–123, 139–151, 178–191, 200–219, 264–276) were generated and used to immunostain CNS tissues of representative vertebrates. mAbs to each region recognized whole human PLP on Western blots; the anti-100–123 mAb did not recognize DM-20, the PLP isoform that lacks residues 116–150. All of …

Diverse Roles Of Pkcα In Vascular Smooth Muscle Contraction, Ava Caudill Dykes Jan 2006

Diverse Roles Of Pkcα In Vascular Smooth Muscle Contraction, Ava Caudill Dykes

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A complete understanding of the mechanisms underlying smooth muscle contractility has proven elusive due to the many interacting factors thought to influence contractile behavior in this muscle type. One such factor, protein kinase Cα (PKCα), is proposed to play a central role in both the activation and modulation of smooth muscle contraction. PKCα is activated through a G-protein coupled receptor and is subsequently translocated to its site of action. Although the mechanisms regulating PKCα site specific translocation are not completely understood, it is thought that this process is essential for PKCα specificity of action within the cell. In chapter II …

Arterial Blood Pressure Monitoring In Overweight Critically Ill Patients: Invasive Or Noninvasive?, Ali Araghi, Joseph J. Bander, Jorge A. Guzman

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Introduction

Blood pressure measurements frequently guide management in critical care. Direct readings, commonly from a major artery, are considered to be the gold standard. Because arterial cannulation is associated with risks, alternative noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) measurements are routinely used. However, the accuracy of NIBP determinations in overweight patients in the outpatient setting is variable, and little is known about critically ill patients. This prospective, observational study was performed to compare direct intra-arterial blood pressure (IABP) with NIBP measurements obtained using auscultatory and oscillometric methods in overweight patients admitted to our medical intensive care unit.

Method

Adult critically ill …

A Database And Tool, Im Browser, For Exploring And Integrating Emerging Gene And Protein Interaction Data For Drosophila, Svetlana Pacifico, Guozhen Liu, Stephen Guest, Jodi R. Parrish, Farshad Fotouhi, Russell L. Finley Jr

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Biological processes are mediated by networks of interacting genes and proteins. Efforts to map and understand these networks are resulting in the proliferation of interaction data derived from both experimental and computational techniques for a number of organisms. The volume of this data combined with the variety of specific forms it can take has created a need for comprehensive databases that include all of the available data sets, and for exploration tools to facilitate data integration and analysis. One powerful paradigm for the navigation and analysis of interaction data is an interaction graph or map that represents proteins …
