Materials and methods: Between August 2007 and March 2012, a total of 13,194 stool specimens of patients were included in the study. The stool samples and the reference strains were inoculated onto Cefsulodin-Irgasan-Novobiocin agar, sheep blood agar, eosin-methylene blue agar, and Hektoen enteric agar media together with CHROMagar Salmonella Plus. All the Salmonella and Aeromonas suspected colonies were identified with an automated system (Phoenix) and MALDI-TOF. Results: …

Patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery frequently require nasal intubation. Although awake fiberoptic intubation is the procedure of choice, a fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) may not be available in all clinics. Furthermore, the procedure itself requires skill and experience, and cannot be used when the view is obstructed by bleeding or secretions. Herein we describe 3 patients in whom oral to nasal endotracheal tube exchange was accomplished with the aid of a nasogastric tube after placement of an LMA CTrachTM, as no FOB was available.

Materials and methods: A total of 120 participants, 60 obese participants (30 male, 30 female) with body mass indexes (BMIs) over 30 kg/m^2 and 60 healthy controls (30 male, 30 female) with BMIs of 18-25 kg/m^2, were included in the study. BMI was calculated as body weight divided by the square of the height (kg/m^2). Body fat percentage, total body fat, and lean body mass were established with bioelectric impedance analysis. Resting …

Blood loss is a major concern during percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of access point parenchymal thickness on bleeding in percutaneous nephrolithotomy procedures. Materials and methods: In this study 85 patients who had undergone a percutaneous nephrolithotomy operation between February 2009 and July 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. All characteristics of the patients were investigated. The details of the operative procedure and the renal parenchymal thickness at the puncture site were also recorded. Blood loss was calculated during the peroperative and postoperative periods. Correlation and multivariate regression analysis were done to detect predictive factors …

The present study aimed to investigate the possible influence of nasopharyngeal preoperative or postoperative tramadol instillation on postoperative pain and agitation in pediatric patients undergoing adenoidectomy, with or without tonsillectomy and tube placement. Materials and methods: Ninety pediatric patients were included in the study. Induction of anesthesia was achieved with 2.5 mg kg^{-1} propofol and 0.6 mg kg^{-1} rocuronium bromide. To maintain the anesthesia, 2%-2.5% sevoflurane in an oxygen-N2O mixture (FiO_2 = 35%) was administered. In Group I (n = 30), 1 mg kg^{-1} tramadol was given 10 min before adenoidectomy, and in Group II (n = 30) it was …

To investigate whether prostatic inflammation affects the contractile responses of prostate tissue and then whether melatonin has any restorative effect on the contractile responses in a rat model of bacterial prostatitis at early stages. Materials and methods: We evaluated the nerve-evoked, adrenergic agonist-induced or cholinergic agonist-induced contractions of isolated prostate tissue at 24 and 72 h after intraurethrally instilled Escherichia coli-treatment. We also analyzed the histological changes in the prostate. Secondarily, we investigated the effect of melatonin pretreatment (7 days, 10 mg kg^{-1} day^{-1}) on the contractile responses and the histopathologic changes. Results: The degrees of acute inflammatory cell infiltration, …

To investigate the role of cell adhesion molecules CD44v6 and CEA in the occurrence, development, and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Materials and methods: The expression of CD44v6 and CEA in 76 CRC tissues and 43 normal colon tissues was detected using an immunohistological technique. The relationship between the 2 molecules’ expression and their pathologic characteristics, especially for metastasis, was investigated. Furthermore, the relevance between the expression of CD44v6 and of CEA was also assessed. Results: Expression of CD44v6 and CEA protein in CRC tissues was higher than in paracarcinoma tissue and normal colorectal mucosa (both P < 0.001). Positive expression of CD44v6 in CRC was associated with lymph node metastasis, Dukes’ stage, and histological differentiation. Higher expression intensity of CEA in CRC was related to lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and invasion depth. Combining analysis of CD44v6 and CEA can improve the sensitivity and specificity in evaluating the metastatic potential of CRC (P < 0.05). There was no relevance between the expression of CD44v6 and CEA in CRC (P > 0.05). Conclusion: CD44v6 …

Bilberry is a natural antioxidant and has been utilized as a free radical scavenger to reverse the toxic effects of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of bilberry on cisplatin-induced toxic effects in rat kidney. Materials and methods: Twenty-one female Wistar-albino rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: group I (control), one dose of saline solution; group II (cisplatin), single dose of 7.5 mg/kg of cisplatin; group III (cisplatin + bilberry), single dose of 7.5 mg/kg of cisplatin and 10 days of bilberry treatment applied as 200 mg/kg of bilberry. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and …
