Hyperosmotic Modification Of Brain Extracellular Space And Blood-Brain Barrier In The Rat As Observed By Electron Microscopy, Susan A. Meacham Dec 1987

Hyperosmotic Modification Of Brain Extracellular Space And Blood-Brain Barrier In The Rat As Observed By Electron Microscopy, Susan A. Meacham

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The highly selective permeability of cerebral blood vessels, termed the blood-brain barrier, is due to endothelial tight junctions (zonulae occludentes). Hyperosmotic solutions reversibly open the blood-brain barrier. The purpose of this study is to determine the immediate effect of hyperosmotic arabinose perfusion upon the cerebrovascular endothelium, the morphology of the cerebral cortex, and the cortical extracellular space.

Twelve adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were separated into three groups of four animals each: control, intermediate, and extreme. Controls were perfused with a Tyrode's solution prewash followed by trialdehyde fixative. The intermediate group received a prewash of 740 mmol/kg arabinose followed by the …

Habitat Utilization By Harpacticoid Copepods: A Morphometric Approach, Susan S. Bell, Keith Walters, Margaret O. Hall Jan 1987

Habitat Utilization By Harpacticoid Copepods: A Morphometric Approach, Susan S. Bell, Keith Walters, Margaret O. Hall

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Examination of harpacticoid copepod morphology was conducted to determine whether morphological resemblance provides a reasonable index of habltat utilization and movement. Discriminant analysis was used to explore the relationship between body form and habitat utilization for copepod species collected from 3 subhabitats within seagrass beds in Tampa Bay, Florida. To examine the accuracy of our procedure the discriminant function derived for Tarnpa Bay copepods was applied to copepods collected in worldwide studies. Three morphological characteristics - ratio of the length of Pereopod 1 first endopod segment to the remaining endopod segments, area of the cephalosome, and length of the first …

Diel Patterns Of Active Vertical Migration In Seagrass Meiofauna, Keith Walters, Susan S. Bell Nov 1986

Diel Patterns Of Active Vertical Migration In Seagrass Meiofauna, Keith Walters, Susan S. Bell

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Patterns of active vertical migration exhibited by sediment-associated meiofauna were examlned in a subtropical seagrass meadow. Total numbers, species composition and percentage of sediment meiofauna found to migrate were examined during two 24 h studies. Large numbers (>20,000 h-1 m-2) of harpacticoid copepods representing a substantial proportion (>50 %) of the total benthic harpacticoid community migrated from the sediment into the water column. Nineteen of 36 harpacticoid species identified migrated actively. Migration was greatest during nighttime. Results indicate the importance of vertical migration to benthic-pelagic interactions in shallow seagrass environments.

A Semiquantitative Analysis Of The Chorda Tympani Taste Pathway In The Rat Brain With The 2-Deoxyglucose Method, Charles L. Hardison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis is based on a semiquantitative analysis of four nuclear relay centers [nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), parabrachial nucleus (PBN), ventroposteromedial nucleus (VPM), gustatory neocortex (GNC)] in the chorda tympani nerve pathway. Metabolic changes were examined by the 2-deoxyglucose method in which one chorda tympani nerve was chemically stimulated and its contralateral side lesioned. Coronal sections of four taste centers were prepared for autoradiography and Nissl staining. Densities of the autoradiograms were determined by means of a video based image processor. Relative differences in the optical density ratios of the stimulated versus lesioned nuclear grey matter areas to white matter …

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz Jun 1986

Interaction Of Putative Estrogens And The Estrogen Receptor System In Leydig Cells In The Balb/C Mouse Testis Resulting In The Initiation Of Dna Synthesis, R. Lloyd Juriansz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Continuous administration of estrogens for 7-9 months, both steroidal and nonsteroidal, to male BALB/c mice, leads to the formation of testicular Leydig cell tumors. Three days following the subcutaneous implantation of a pellet of estrogen in cholesterol, there is a peak in the incorporation of 3H-tymidine into the DNA of the interstitial cells. These effects are hypothesized to be mediated by the estrogen receptor system in the Leydig cell. Common experimental techniques for the measurement of hormone binding, such as dextran coated charcoal treatment, proved to be impossible to employ in this system, therefore a procedure was developed using …

Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

Activity Of An Identified Histaminergic Neuron, And Its Possible Role In Arousal Of Feeding Behavior In Semi-Intact Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

The possible functions of histaminergic neuron C2 were studied in an isolated head preparation from which it was possible to obtain intracellular recordings while the buccal mass exhibited feeding-like responses. Application of food to the lips of the isolated head preparation elicited rhythmic buccal movements that appeared to be ingestion responses, since they moved seaweed into the buccal cavity and towards the esophagus, and their frequency and regularity was similar to the ingestion responses studied in a group of intact animals. The ingestion responses of the buccal mass consisted of 2 main phases of movement of the radula from a …

Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

Sensory Function And Gating Of Histaminergic Neuron C2 In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the possible sensory function of the identified histaminergic neuron C2. Mechanical stimulation of a narrow region around the mouth of the animal (perioral zone) elicits brief depolarizing potentials in C2. Extracellular recordings from the peripheral axons of C2 indicate that the depolarizing potentials are due to action potentials that are conveyed from the periphery but do not invade the cell body, since they fail at a region with a low safety factor within the cerebral ganglion. These blocked axonal spikes (A- spikes) function as if they were excitatory synaptic inputs to C2, since the synaptic output of …

An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel Jan 1986

An Identified Histaminergic Neuron Modulates Feeding Motor Circuitry In Aplysia, Hillel J. Chiel

Faculty Scholarship

An identified histaminergic neuron, C2, in the marine mollusk Aplysia is a complex mechanoafferent which appears to contribute to the maintenance of food arousal by means of its synaptic connections to the metacerebral cell (MCC). Because C2 also has extensive synaptic outputs to neurons other than the MCC, we studied its possible motor functions. We identified several synaptic followers of C2 and found that some were excitatory motor neurons for extrinsic muscles of the buccal mass, while others were modulatory motor neurons that inhibited contractions. In addition, we found that these neurons and other synaptic followers of C2 received powerful …

Extrathyroidal Human Biochemistry Of Monoiodotyrosine, Stanley Andrew Tan Aug 1984

Extrathyroidal Human Biochemistry Of Monoiodotyrosine, Stanley Andrew Tan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The existence of extrathyroidal monoiodotyrosine (MIT) has been debated because of uncertain results from measuring serum MIT. The reason is that the isotopic and chromatographic assays used have not been sensitive enough. This investigation undertook to establish the existence of MIT in serum utilizing a radioimmunoassay (RIA), to study the physiology of serum MIT, and to discover the pharmacologic effects of exogenous MIT.

MIT-binding antibody was raised in rabbits by immunization with an MIT-porcine thyroglobulin conjugate. The antiserum bound 40% of the labeled MIT at a final dilution of 1:1000. Incubation of 100 µ1 antiserum with 50 pg [125 …

Effect Of Menstrual Cycle On Hedonic Response To Gustatory Stimuli, Laurie Ann O'Toole Jul 1984

Effect Of Menstrual Cycle On Hedonic Response To Gustatory Stimuli, Laurie Ann O'Toole

Dissertations and Theses

The present experiment was conducted to determine the relationship between the human menstrual cycle and gustatory hedonic response. Hedonic response was defined as the perceived pleasantness or unpleasantness of a taste stimulus. Gender differences in taste hedonic have been observed; these may be due to differences in endocrine systems. Animal taste preferences are altered when reproductive hormonal status is experimentally manipulated. Previous researchers report that human females' hedonic responses to sucrose vary systematically with phase of menstrual cycle.

Development Of A Mathematical Model Of Renal Function For Clinical Application, Barbara A. Holshouser

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This model describes the orthoiodohippurate (OIH) distribution and clearance in the renovascular system. The model is described by five compartments: the blood, left and right kidneys, bladder and the red blood cell compartment. Data for these compartments, except the RBC compartment, are collected with scintillation detectors monitoring OIH tagged with 1-131 as the radiopharmaceutical passes through each compartment. Time/ activity curves are plotted for the data and used as inputs to the model parameter estimation routine. The compartments are described by a set of first order ordinary differential equations solved using the Adam's methods. For parameter estimation, an iterative predictor-corrector …

The Coronary Distribution Zone : Mathematical Modelling Of The Left Ventricular Epicardial Surface For Area Calculation, Three-Dimensional Rotaton And Display, S. Matts E. Sjölander

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A computer model of the left ventricular (LV) epicardial surface was developed from Jang’s truncated ellipsoidal model, which has a minor to major axis ratio of 6:10. The model was applied in calculating the area of a segment of the myocardium, jeopardized by an impending occlusion of its associated artery. The endangered segment of the LV muscle was also visualized in different projections by rotations in three space and graphical displays simulating the three dimensions.

The area formula for the surface of the ideal model , a truncated prolate spheroid, was derived and used in producing maps for manual calculations …

A Field Investigation Of Meiofaunal Dispersal: Tidal Resuspension And Implications, Susan S. Bell, K. M. Sherman Oct 1980

A Field Investigation Of Meiofaunal Dispersal: Tidal Resuspension And Implications, Susan S. Bell, K. M. Sherman

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Presence of meiofauna in resuspended sediments was investigated in a tidal creek system employing a specially designed core sampler and quick freezing techniques. Forty core samples were taken during 4 successive ebb tides to determine the distribution of meiofauna in (a) overlying water; (b) resuspended sediment; and (c) undisturbed sediment fractions of each sample. Our experiments demonstrate that 13-44 % of the meiobenthic copepod subcommunity was present in overlying and resuspended sediment fractions, while only a small percentage of nematodes was found simultaneously in these layers. We suggest that selected meiofauna may disperse through tidally coupled mechanisms and that such …

Lipoprotein Lipase Inhibitor Removal During Ultrafiltration Of Renal Failure Patients, Alisa Minear

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Plasma samples were obtained from seven hypertriglyceridemic (>150 mg/dl) chronic renal failure patients before and after regular hemodialysis. The effect of the plasma on the lipolytic activity of bovine milk lipoprotein lipase was investigated. The lipoprotein lipase activity, as measured by release of C14-labeled free fatty acid from triglyceride, was decreased 8-67% when incubated with uremic plasma as compared to the control plasma (44 mg/dl triglyceride). The inhibition noted prior to hemodialysis did not appear to be alleviated by the dialysis but subsequent treatment with an isolated ultrafiltration technique did appear to remove an inhibitory substance as …
