Mentoring Undergraduate Research In Mathematical Modeling, Glenn Ledder Jun 2022

Mentoring Undergraduate Research In Mathematical Modeling, Glenn Ledder

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

In writing about undergraduate research in mathematical modeling, I draw on my 31 years as a mathematics professor at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where I mentored students in honors’ theses, REU groups, and research done in a classroom setting, as well as my prior experience. I share my views on the differences between research at the undergraduate and professional levels, offer advice for undergraduate mentoring, provide suggestions for a variety of ways that students can disseminate their research, offer some thoughts on mathematical modeling and how to explain it to undergraduates, and discuss the challenges involved in broadening research participation …

Gene-Based Association Tests Using New Polygenic Risk Scores And Incorporating Gene Expression Data, Shijia Yan, Qiuying Sha, Shuanglin Zhang Jun 2022

Gene-Based Association Tests Using New Polygenic Risk Scores And Incorporating Gene Expression Data, Shijia Yan, Qiuying Sha, Shuanglin Zhang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Recently, gene-based association studies have shown that integrating genome-wide association studies (GWAS) with expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) data can boost statistical power and that the genetic liability of traits can be captured by polygenic risk scores (PRSs). In this paper, we propose a new gene-based statistical method that leverages gene-expression measure-ments and new PRSs to identify genes that are associated with phenotypes of interest. We used a generalized linear model to associate phenotypes with gene expression and PRSs and used a score-test statistic to test the association between phenotypes and genes. Our simulation studies show that the newly developed …

Analytical And Numerical Solutions To Describe Water Table Fluctuations Due To Canal Seepage And Time-Varying Recharge, Ashutosh Upadhyaya, Manisha M. Kankarej

All Works

Abstract Hybrid finite analytic solution (HFAS), Galerkin's method based finite element solution (FES) and fully implicit finite difference solution (FIFDS) of one dimensional nonlinear Boussinesq equation and Analytical solution of Boussinesq equation linearized by Baumann's transformation (analytical solution I, AS I) as well as linearized by Werner's transformation (analytical solution II, AS II) were employed to obtain water table rise in a horizontal unconfined aquifer lying between two canals located at finite distance having different elevations and subjected to various patterns of recharge, i.e. zero recharge, constant recharge, as well as time varying recharge. Considering HFAS as benchmark solution, water …

A Generalization Of Combinatorial Identities For Stable Discrete Series Constants, Richard Ehrenborg, Sophie Moreland, Margaret Readdy Jun 2022

A Generalization Of Combinatorial Identities For Stable Discrete Series Constants, Richard Ehrenborg, Sophie Moreland, Margaret Readdy

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra’s character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra’s work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later, Goresky–Kottwitz–MacPherson (1997) and Herb (2000) gave different formulas for these constants. In this article, we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two …

Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth Jun 2022

Policing By Proxy: Interrogating Big Tech's Role In Law Enforcement, Claire Elizabeth

University Honors Theses

Predictive policing, sometimes referred to as data-driven or actuarial policing, is a method of policing that uses a risk-based approach to law enforcement. For-profit technology companies market proprietary risk assessment algorithms to law enforcement organizations as tools meant to proactively mitigate crime. Using data collected from a vast array of sources, both personal and public, police are able to "predict" the likelihood of criminal activity in a given area using these algorithms. Proponents claim that risk assessment tools have the potential to fight crime with unbiased accuracy and speed by predicting when, where, and whom to police by relying on …

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes Jun 2022

An Absence Of Elephants In The Room: Religion, Philosophy, And Negative Numbers In Albert Girard’S A New Discovery In Algebra, Ethan Wilmes

Lawrence University Honors Projects

In early seventeenth-century Europe, the lines separating theology, science, and humanism were thin; what the modern reader understands as three distinct spheres of knowledge considerably overlapped with one another. Scientific discoveries and innovations coming from new technologies and foreign lands were laden with implications about theology and the human condition. While bland to all but the most fringe historians of mathematics today, the discovery of negative numbers led to a passionate and occasionally fierce epistemological debate throughout Europe. Falling outside of traditional mathematical knowledge, negative numbers found themselves in a sort of existential limbo; however useful they proved themselves to …

On Simultaneous Similarity Of D-Tuples Of Commuting Square Matrices, Corey Connelly Jun 2022

On Simultaneous Similarity Of D-Tuples Of Commuting Square Matrices, Corey Connelly

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It has been shown by B. Shekhtman that when any d-tuple A of pairwise commuting N × N matrices with complex entries is cyclic, then A is simultaneously similar to the d-tuple of commuting N × N matrices B if and only if B is cyclic, and the sets of polynomials in d variables which annihilate A and B are equivalent.

This thesis offers a further generalization of this result, demonstrating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the simultaneous similarity of n-cyclic d-tuples of commuting square complex-valued matrices.

Differential Operators On Classical Invariant Rings Do Not Lift Modulo P, Jack Jeffries, Anurag K. Singh Jun 2022

Differential Operators On Classical Invariant Rings Do Not Lift Modulo P, Jack Jeffries, Anurag K. Singh

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Levasseur and Stafford described the rings of differential operators on various classical invariant rings of characteristic zero; in each of the cases that they considered, the differential operators form a simple ring. Towards an attack on the simplicity of rings of differential operators on invariant rings of linearly reductive groups over the complex numbers, Smith and Van den Bergh asked if differential operators on the corresponding rings of positive prime characteristic lift to characteristic zero differential operators. We prove that, in general, this is not the case for determinantal hypersurfaces, as well as for Pfaffian and symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. We …

The Local Cohomology Spectral Sequence For Topological Modular Forms, Robert Bruner, John Greenlees, John Rognes

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

We discuss proofs of local cohomology theorems for topological modular forms, based on Mahowald–Rezk duality and on Gorenstein duality, and then make the associated local cohomology spectral sequences explicit, including their differential patterns and hidden extensions.

Using Graph Theoretical Methods And Traceroute To Visually Represent Hidden Networks, Jordan M. Sahs Jun 2022

Using Graph Theoretical Methods And Traceroute To Visually Represent Hidden Networks, Jordan M. Sahs

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Within the scope of a Wide Area Network (WAN), a large geographical communication network in which a collection of networking devices communicate data to each other, an example being the spanning communication network, known as the Internet, around continents. Within WANs exists a collection of Routers that transfer network packets to other devices. An issue pertinent to WANs is their immeasurable size and density, as we are not sure of the amount, or the scope, of all the devices that exists within the network. By tracing the routes and transits of data that traverses within the WAN, we can identify …

Preconditioned Iteractive Solvers For The 2d Helmholtz Equation Via Radial Basis Functions, Lina Wu Jun 2022

Preconditioned Iteractive Solvers For The 2d Helmholtz Equation Via Radial Basis Functions, Lina Wu

Publications and Research

In this paper, we discuss the solution solver for the linear system of equations arising from the discretized 2D Helmholtz equation using the radial basis functions. The coefficient matrix A that is generated from the discretization is dense and often ill-conditioned. This paper uses preconditioned iterative methods such as the General Minimal Residual method (GMRES) to solve the linear system. Different preconditioners are compared. Numerical experiments are conducted in order to provide a comparison of the convergence rates among various preconditioned linear systems. A further observation is made into the eigenvalue distributions and the choice of the shaping parameters during …

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs Jun 2022

Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.

Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …

Monotonicity Properties Of Functionals Under Ricci Flow On Manifolds Without And With Boundary, Paul Bracken Jun 2022

Monotonicity Properties Of Functionals Under Ricci Flow On Manifolds Without And With Boundary, Paul Bracken

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, the idea of the Ricci flow is introduced and its significance and importance to related problems in mathematics had been discussed. Several functionals are defined and their behavior is studied under Ricci flow. A unique minimizer is shown to exist for one of the functionals. This functional evaluated at the minimizer is strictly increasing. The results for the first functional considered are extended to manifold with boundary. Finally, two physically motivated examples are presented.

Sparse Spectral-Tau Method For The Two-Dimensional Helmholtz Problem Posed On A Rectangular Domain, Gabriella M. Dalton Jun 2022

Sparse Spectral-Tau Method For The Two-Dimensional Helmholtz Problem Posed On A Rectangular Domain, Gabriella M. Dalton

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Within recent decades, spectral methods have become an important technique in numerical computing for solving partial differential equations. This is due to their superior accuracy when compared to finite difference and finite element methods. For such spectral approximations, the convergence rate is solely dependent on the smoothness of the solution yielding the potential to achieve spectral accuracy. We present an iterative approach for solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz problem posed on a rectangular domain subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions that is well-conditioned, low in memory, and of sub-quadratic complexity. The proposed approach spectrally approximates the partial differential equation by means of …

(R1881) Impatient Customers In Queueing System With Optional Vacation Policies And Power Saving Mode, Poonam Gupta, Rajni Gupta, Sangeeta Malik Jun 2022

(R1881) Impatient Customers In Queueing System With Optional Vacation Policies And Power Saving Mode, Poonam Gupta, Rajni Gupta, Sangeeta Malik

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this manuscript, a queueing system with two optional vacation policies, power-saving mode under reneging and retention of reneged customers in both vacations is analyzed. If the server is free, it chooses either of the vacations, classical vacation or working vacation. During vacations, the customers may get impatient due to delays and may leave the system, but they are retained in the system with some convincing mechanisms. On vacation completion, if the system is empty, the server is turned off to facilitate better utilization of the resources. Some of the operating system characteristics are derived using the probability generating functions …

(R1517) Asymptotical Stability Of Riemann-Liouville Fractional Neutral Systems With Multiple Time-Varying Delays, Erdal Korkmaz, Abdulhamit Ozdemir Jun 2022

(R1517) Asymptotical Stability Of Riemann-Liouville Fractional Neutral Systems With Multiple Time-Varying Delays, Erdal Korkmaz, Abdulhamit Ozdemir

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this manuscript, we investigate the asymptotical stability of solutions of Riemann-Liouville fractional neutral systems associated to multiple time-varying delays. Then, we use the linear matrix inequality (LMI) and the Lyapunov-Krasovskii method to obtain sufficient conditions for the asymptotical stability of solutions of the system when the given delays are time dependent and one of them is unbounded. Finally, we present some examples to indicate the efficacy of the consequences obtained.

Analysis Of A Quantum Attack On The Blum-Micali Pseudorandom Number Generator, Tingfei Feng Jun 2022

Analysis Of A Quantum Attack On The Blum-Micali Pseudorandom Number Generator, Tingfei Feng

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In 2012, Guedes, Assis, and Lula proposed a quantum attack on a pseudorandom number generator named the Blum-Micali Pseudorandom number generator. They claimed that the quantum attack can outperform classical attacks super-polynomially. However, this paper shows that the quantum attack cannot get the correct seed and provides another corrected algorithm that is in exponential time but still faster than the classical attack. Since the original classical attacks are in exponential time, the Blum-Micali pseudorandom number generator would be still quantum resistant.

The results obtained are new and generalize some known results appearing in the literature. Two examples are also provided to illustrate the results.

Analysis Of Ibnr Liabilities With Interevent Times Depending On Claim Counts, Daniel J. Geiger, Akim Adekpedjou Jun 2022

Analysis Of Ibnr Liabilities With Interevent Times Depending On Claim Counts, Daniel J. Geiger, Akim Adekpedjou

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We extend a recently proposed stochastic loss reserving model for liabilities from incurred but not reported (IBNR) micro-level claims. We propose viewing the number of claims from an event as a measure of catastrophic severity. This view covers catastrophes with arbitrarily many classes of magnitude. Our Markovian model allows the time between disasters to depend on the previous event's level of severity. Simultaneously, we let the discount rate vary in the same manner. First, we find the moments of IBNR liabilities in our model. Then, we permit a later time horizon for IBNR claims when considered jointly with incurred and …

Why Flash Radiotherapy Is Efficient: A Possible Explanation, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong Jun 2022

Why Flash Radiotherapy Is Efficient: A Possible Explanation, Julio Urenda, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Usually, a cancer radiotherapy session lasts between 10 to 20 minutes. Technically, it is possible to transmit the dose faster, but traditionally, medical doctors were reluctant to do it, since they were afraid of negative effects of such a speedy treatment. Recent experiments show, however, that these fears are unfounded; moreover, transmitting the whole radiation dose in a shorter time turns out to be more beneficial for the patients. In this paper, we provide a possible geometric explanation for this empirical phenomenon.

Why Rejuvenation Attempts Often Lead To Cancer And Why Cyclic Rejuvenation Is Better: A Simple Qualitative Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2022

Why Rejuvenation Attempts Often Lead To Cancer And Why Cyclic Rejuvenation Is Better: A Simple Qualitative Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Since the 1960s, biologists have shown that, contrary to the previous belief that ageing is irreversible, many undesirable biological effects of ageing can be reversed. First attempts to perform this reversal on living creatures were not fully successful: while mice achieved some rejuvenation, many of these rejuvenated mice developed cancer. Later experiments showed that these cancers can be avoided if we apply cyclic rejuvenation: a short period of rejuvenation followed by a longer pause. This modified strategy led to recent successes of mice that recovered their age-deteriorated vision and mice that recovered their heart tissue after a heart attack. However, …

(R1521) On Weighted Lacunary Interpolation, Swarnima Bahadur, Sariya Bano Jun 2022

(R1521) On Weighted Lacunary Interpolation, Swarnima Bahadur, Sariya Bano

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we considered the non-uniformly distributed zeros on the unit circle, which are obtained by projecting vertically the zeros of the derivative of Legendre polynomial together with x=1 and x=-1 onto the unit circle. We prescribed the function on the above said nodes, while its second derivative at all nodes except at x=1 and x=-1 with suitable weight function and obtained the existence, explicit forms and establish a convergence theorem for such interpolatory polynomial. We call such interpolation as weighted Lacunary interpolation on the unit circle.

(R1516) Results On Fekete-Szegö Problem For Some New Subclasses Of Univalent Analytic Functions With Fractional-Order Operators, N. Singha, R. Kumar Jun 2022

(R1516) Results On Fekete-Szegö Problem For Some New Subclasses Of Univalent Analytic Functions With Fractional-Order Operators, N. Singha, R. Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We introduce some new subclasses of analytic functions which are univalent in an open unit disk by means of fractional calculus. The elemental interest is to explore the significance of fractional-order operators while formulating a few distinct subclasses of univalent analytic functions. Present work establishes the Fekete-Szegö inequality for the proposed subclasses. In addition, some classical Fekete-Szegö problems have also been retrieved and discussed as particular cases of the presented work. To make the suggested work more evident, an extremal function is also provided for which a sharp upper bound is attained.

(R1898) A Study On Inextensible Flows Of Polynomial Curves With Flc Frame, Süleyman Şenyurt, Kemal Eren, Kebire Hilal Ayvacı

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we investigate the inextensible flows of polynomial space curves in R3. We calculate that the necessary and sufficient conditions for an inextensible curve flow are represented as a partial differential equation involving the curvatures. Also, we expressed the time evolution of the Frenet like curve (Flc) frame. Finally, an example of the evolution of the polynomial curve with Flc frame is given and graphed.

Computational Paradox Of Deep Learning: A Qualitative Explanation, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong Jun 2022

Computational Paradox Of Deep Learning: A Qualitative Explanation, Jonatan Contreras, Martine Ceberio, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Nguyen Hoang Phuong

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In general, the more unknowns in a problem, the more computational efforts is necessary to find all these unknowns. Interestingly, in state-of-the-art machine learning methods like deep learning, computations become easier when we increase the number of unknown parameters way beyond the number of equations. In this paper, we provide a qualitative explanation for this computational paradox.

(R1882) Effects Of Viscosity, Oblateness, And Finite Straight Segment On The Stability Of The Equilibrium Points In The Rr3bp, Bhavneet Kaur, Sumit Kumar, Rajiv Aggarwal

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Associating the influences of viscosity and oblateness in the finite straight segment model of the Robe’s problem, the linear stability of the collinear and non-collinear equilibrium points for a small solid sphere m3 of density \rho3 are analyzed. This small solid sphere is moving inside the first primary m1 whose hydrostatic equilibrium figure is an oblate spheroid and it consists of an incompressible homogeneous fluid of density \rho1. The second primary m2 is a finite straight segment of length 2l. The existence of the equilibrium points is discussed after deriving the pertinent …
