Aquatic Ecotoxicology: Theoretical Explanation Of Empirical Formulas, Demetrius R. Hernandez, George M. Molina Holguin, Francisco Parra, Vivian Sanchez, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To analyze the effect of pollution on marine life, it is important to know how exactly the concentration of toxic substances decreases with time. There are several semi-empirical formulas that describe this decrease. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for these empirical formulas.

Math 57: Applied Differential Equations I, John Mayberry

Pacific Open Texts

This book is designed for the fourth semester, “capstone” course in a calculus sequence with an emphasis on modeling with linear differential equations. Students will learn to translate verbal descriptions of physical problems into differential equation models, solve and visualize solutions to differential equations using MATLAB, calculate and investigate the behavior of analytic solutions to linear differential equations, discuss how solutions to differential equations depend on parameters, and interpret solutions to differential equations in the context of applications.

Conservative Unconditionally Stable Decoupled Numerical Schemes For The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes–Darcy–Boussinesq System, Wenbin Chen, Daozhi Han, Xiaoming Wang, Yichao Zhang Nov 2022

Conservative Unconditionally Stable Decoupled Numerical Schemes For The Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes–Darcy–Boussinesq System, Wenbin Chen, Daozhi Han, Xiaoming Wang, Yichao Zhang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose two mass and heat energy conservative, unconditionally stable, decoupled numerical algorithms for solving the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes–Darcy–Boussinesq system that models thermal convection of two-phase flows in superposed free flow and porous media. The schemes totally decouple the computation of the Cahn–Hilliard equation, the Darcy equations, the heat equation, the Navier–Stokes equations at each time step, and thus significantly reducing the computational cost. We rigorously show that the schemes are conservative and energy-law preserving. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the algorithms.

Resource Allocation For Multi-Tasking Optimization: Explanation Of An Empirical Formula, Alan Gamez, Antonio Aguirre, Christian Cordova, Alberto Miranda, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

For multi-tasking optimization problems, it has been empirically shown that the most effective resource allocation is attained when we assume that the gain of each task logarithmically depends on the computation time allocated to this task. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical fact.

How To Reach A Joint Decision With The Smallest Need For Compromise, Sofia Holguin, Olga Kosheleva Nov 2022

How To Reach A Joint Decision With The Smallest Need For Compromise, Sofia Holguin, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Usually, people's interests do not match perfectly. So when several people need to make a joint decision, they need to compromise. The more people one has to coordinate the decision with, the fewer chances that each person's preferences will be properly taken into account. Therefore, when a large group of people need to make a decision, it is desirable to make sure that this decision can be reached by dividing all the people into small-size groups so that this decision can reach a compromise between the members of each group. In this paper, we use a recent mathematical result to …

Word Representation: Theoretical Explanation Of An Empirical Fact, Leonel Escapita, Diana Licon, Madison Anderson, Diego Pedraza, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

There is a reasonably accurate empirical formula that predicts, for two words i and j, the number Xij of times when the word i will appear in the vicinity of the word j. The parameters of this formula are determined by using the weighted least square approach. Empirically, the predictions are the most accurate if we use the weights proportional to a power of Xij. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation for this empirical fact.

Need For Optimal Distributed Measurement Of Cumulative Quantities Explains The Ubiquity Of Absolute And Relative Error Components, Hector A. Reyes, Aaron D. Brown, Jeffrey Escamilla, Ethan D. Kish, Vladik Kreinovich Nov 2022

Need For Optimal Distributed Measurement Of Cumulative Quantities Explains The Ubiquity Of Absolute And Relative Error Components, Hector A. Reyes, Aaron D. Brown, Jeffrey Escamilla, Ethan D. Kish, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, we need to measure the value of a cumulative quantity, i.e., a quantity that is obtained by adding measurement results corresponding to different spatial locations. How can we select the measuring instruments so that the resulting cumulative quantity can be determined with known accuracy -- and, to avoid unnecessary expenses, not more accurately than needed? It turns out that the only case where such an optimal arrangement is possible is when the required accuracy means selecting the upper bounds on absolute and relative error components. This results provides a possible explanation for the ubiquity of such …

Matrix Tree Theorem For The Net Laplacian Matrix Of A Signed Graph, Sudipta Mallik Nov 2022

Matrix Tree Theorem For The Net Laplacian Matrix Of A Signed Graph, Sudipta Mallik

Mathematics Faculty Research

For a simple signed graph G with the adjacency matrix A and net degree matrix D±, the net Laplacian matrix is L± = D±−A. We introduce a new oriented incidence matrix N± which can keep track of the sign as well as the orientation of each edge of G. Also L± = N±(N±)T. Using this decomposition, we find the number of both positive and negative spanning trees of G in terms of the principal minors of L± generalizing the Matrix Tree Theorem for an unsigned graph. …

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

LSTM-SDM is a python-based integrated computational framework built on the top of Tensorflow/Keras and written in the Jupyter notebook. It provides several object-oriented functionalities for implementing single layer and multilayer LSTM models for sequential data modeling and time series forecasting. Multiple subroutines are blended to create a conducive user-friendly environment that facilitates data exploration and visualization, normalization and input preparation, hyperparameter tuning, performance evaluations, visualization of results, and statistical analysis. We utilized the LSTM-SDM framework in predicting the stock market index and observed impressive results. The framework can be generalized to solve several other real-world time series problems.

Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh Nov 2022

Logic, Co-Ordination And The Envelope Of Our Beliefs, Rohit J. Parikh

Publications and Research

Each of us has a story which we can think of as a set of beliefs, hopefully consistent. We make our decisions in view of our beliefs which may be probabilistic, in the general case, but simple yes or no as in this paper. Our beliefs are our envelope just as the shell of a tortoise is its envelope.

Decision theory - or single agent game theory tells us when to make the best choice in a game of us against nature. But nature has no desire to further or frustrate our efforts. Nature is mysterious but not malign.

On A Prior Based On The Wasserstein Information Matrix, Wuchen Li, F. J. Rubio Nov 2022

On A Prior Based On The Wasserstein Information Matrix, Wuchen Li, F. J. Rubio

Faculty Publications

We introduce a prior for the parameters of univariate continuous distributions, based on the Wasserstein information matrix, which is invariant under reparameterisations. We discuss the links between the proposed prior with information geometry. We present sufficient conditions for the propriety of the posterior distribution for general classes of models. We present a simulation study that shows that the induced posteriors have good frequentist properties.

Manufacturability And Analysis Of Topologically Optimized Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites, Jesus A. Ferrand Nov 2022

Manufacturability And Analysis Of Topologically Optimized Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites, Jesus A. Ferrand

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Researchers are unlocking the potential of Continuous Fiber Reinforced Composites for producing components with greater strength-to-weight ratios than state of the art metal alloys and unidirectional composites. The key is the emerging technology of topology optimization and advances in additive manufacturing. Topology optimization can fine tune component geometry and fiber placement all while satisfying stress constraints. However, the technology cannot yet robustly guarantee manufacturability. For this reason, substantial post-processing of an optimized design consisting of manual fiber replacement and subsequent Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is still required.

To automate this post-processing in two dimensions, two (2) algorithms were developed. The …

General Breather And Rogue Wave Solutions To The Complex Short Pulse Equation, Bao-Feng Feng, Ruyun Ma, Yujuan Zhang Nov 2022

General Breather And Rogue Wave Solutions To The Complex Short Pulse Equation, Bao-Feng Feng, Ruyun Ma, Yujuan Zhang

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In the present paper, we attempt to construct both the breather and rogue wave solutions to the focusing complex short pulse (fCSP) equation via the KP–Toda reduction method. Following a procedure of reducing the bilinear equations satisfied by tau functions of Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (KP)–Toda hierarchy to the ones of the fCSP equation with nonzero boundary condition, we first deduce the general breather solution of the fCSP equation starting from a specially arranged tau-function of the KP–Toda hierarchy, then we construct and prove the Nth order rogue wave solutions of the fCSP equation and express them in two different but equivalent forms …

On The Projections Of Commutative C*-Algebras, Alaa Ahmad Hamdan Nov 2022

On The Projections Of Commutative C*-Algebras, Alaa Ahmad Hamdan

Theses

Gelfand and Naimark proved that the Banach algebra of continuous complex-valued functions on a compact space Ω is the only example of commutative unital C*-algebras. We study the C*-algebra C(Ω) and its main elements, such as projections. Also, we discuss the mapping between projections, which preserves orthogonality (orthoisomorphism). A bijective θ between projections induces a bijective Θ between the Boolean algebra of clopen subsets of X. Then, we give main properties of such Θ. For a compact subset X of ℝ, we classify the projections of C(X) by introducing the similar relation on P(C(X)). We introduce an …

Numerical Methods For Locating Zeros Of Polynomial Systems Using Resultant, Ayade Salah Abdelmalk Nov 2022

Numerical Methods For Locating Zeros Of Polynomial Systems Using Resultant, Ayade Salah Abdelmalk

Theses

In this thesis, we modify two methods for locating zeros of polynomial systems which are one dimensional path following and Lanczos method. Both approaches are based on calculating the resultant matrix corresponding to each variable in the system. These methods are stable and preserving the spareness of these matrices. These methods are developed to avoid using the zeros of the multiresultant of each variable which are condition problems. Theoretical and numerical results will be given to show the efficiency of these methods. Finally, algorithms for the Mathematica codes are given.

Valuation Of Options In A High Volatile Regime Switching Market, Tasnim Mazen Sharif Alhamad Nov 2022

Valuation Of Options In A High Volatile Regime Switching Market, Tasnim Mazen Sharif Alhamad

Theses

Financial modeling by Stochastic Differential Equations-SDEs with regime-switching has been utilized to allow moving from one economic state to another. The aim of this thesis is to tackle the pricing of European options under a regime-switching model where the volatility is augmented. Regime-switching models are more realistic since they encompass the effect of an external event on the underlying asset prices. But they are challenging, considering in addition increased volatility in the model will for sure make the option pricing problem more complicated and its solution may not exist analytically. Numerical methods for finance could be very helpful in this …

An Uncountable Ergodic Roth Theorem And Applications, Polona Durcik, Rachel Greenfeld, Annina Iseli, Asgar Jamneshan, José Madrid Nov 2022

An Uncountable Ergodic Roth Theorem And Applications, Polona Durcik, Rachel Greenfeld, Annina Iseli, Asgar Jamneshan, José Madrid

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We establish an uncountable amenable ergodic Roth theorem, in which the acting group is not assumed to be countable and the space need not be separable. This generalizes a previous result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang, and complements a result of Zorin- Kranich. We establish the following two additional results: First, a combinatorial application about triangular patterns in certain subsets of the Cartesian square of arbitrary amenable groups, extending a result of Bergelson, McCutcheon and Zhang for countable amenable groups. Second, a uniformity aspect in the double recurrence theorem for Γ-systems for arbitrary uniformly amenable groups Γ. Our uncountable Roth …

Study Of Flow Of Buongiorno Nanofluid In A Conical Gap Between A Cone And A Disk, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Dambaru Bhatta

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The cone–disk apparatus consists of a cone that touches the disk at its apex and is used in medical evices, viscosimeters, conical diffusers, etc. Theoretically, a three-dimensional flow of a nanofluid in a conical gap of a cone–disk apparatus is studied for four different physical configurations. Buongiorno nanofluid model, consisting of thermophoresis and Brownian diffusion mechanisms, is used to describe the convective heat transport of the nanofluid. The continuity equation, the Navier–Stokes momentum equation, the heat equation, and the conservation of nanoparticle volume fraction equation constitute the governing system for the flow of nanofluids. The Lie group approach is used …

Multi-Scale Hybridized Topic Modeling: A Pipeline For Analyzing Unstructured Text Datasets Via Topic Modeling, Keyi Cheng, Stefan Inzer, Adrian Leung, Xiaoxian Shen, Michael Perlmutter, Michael Lindstrom, Joyce Chew, Todd Presner, Deanna Needell

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We propose a multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method to find hidden topics from transcribed interviews more accurately and efficiently than traditional topic modeling methods. Our multi-scale hybridized topic modeling method (MSHTM) approaches data at different scales and performs topic modeling in a hierarchical way utilizing first a classical method, Nonnegative Matrix Factorization, and then a transformer-based method, BERTopic. It harnesses the strengths of both NMF and BERTopic. Our method can help researchers and the public better extract and interpret the interview information. Additionally, it provides insights for new indexing systems based on the topic level. We then deploy our method …

Study Of Multilayer Flow Of A Bi-Viscous Bingham Fluid Sandwiched Between Hybrid Nanofluid In A Vertical Slab With Nonlinear Boussinesq Approximation, Mahanthesh Basavarajappa, Shruthy Myson, Kuppalapalle Vajravelu

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Bi-Viscosity Bingham plastic fluids are used to understand the rheological characteristics of pigment-oil suspensions, polymeric gels, emulsions, heavy oil, etc. High-temperature applications in many industrial and engineering problems, linear density-temperature variation is inadequate to describe convective heat transport. Therefore, the characteristics of the nonlinear convective flow of a Bi-Viscosity Bingham Fluid (BVBF) through three layers in a vertical slab are studied. The two outer layers of the oil-based hybrid nanofluid and the intermediate layer of BVBF are considered. The thermal buoyancy force is governed by the nonlinear Boussinesq approximation. Continuity of heat flux, velocity, shear stress, and temperature are imposed …

The Spectral Picture And Joint Spectral Radius Of The Generalized Spherical Aluthge Transform, Chafiq Benhida, Raul E. Curto, Sang Hoon Lee, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

For an arbitrary commuting d--tuple $\bT$ of Hilbert space operators, we fully determine the spectral picture of the generalized spherical Aluthge transform $\dbT$ and we prove that the spectral radius of $\bT$ can be calculated from the norms of the iterates of $\dbT$. \ Let $\bm{T} \equiv (T_1,\cdots,T_d)$ be a commuting d--tuple of bounded operators acting on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space, let P:=T∗1T1+⋯+T∗dTd−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−√, and let ⎛⎝⎜⎜T1⋮Td⎞⎠⎟⎟=⎛⎝⎜⎜V1⋮Vd⎞⎠⎟⎟P be the canonical polar decomposition, with (V1,⋯,Vd) a (joint) partial isometry and ⋂i=1dkerTi=⋂i=1dkerVi=kerP. \medskip For 0≤t≤1, we define the generalized spherical Aluthge transform of $\bm{T}$ by \Delta_t(\bm{T}):=(P^t V_1P^{1-t}, \cdots, P^t V_dP^{1-t}). We …

Exploring The Vulnerability Of A Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (Ntga) - Generated Unlearnable Cifar-10 Dataset, Gitte Ost Oct 2022

Exploring The Vulnerability Of A Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (Ntga) - Generated Unlearnable Cifar-10 Dataset, Gitte Ost

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nowadays, a massive amount of data is generated and stored on servers and cloudsfrom various applications daily. Preventing these data from unauthorized use often becomes necessary and critical in various real-world applications. Many researchers have studied this crucial problem and developed different methods for this purpose. Among them, Neural Tangent Generalization Attack (NTGA) is one of the most efficient methods to make a dataset unlearnable, which means that the dataset is not learnable by machine learning/deep learning methods. That is, the NTGA-generated dataset is protected against unauthorized use. In this thesis, we explore the vulnerability of an NTGA-generated unlearnable CIFAR-10 …

Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh Oct 2022

Path-Stick Solitaire On Graphs, Jan-Hendrik De Wiljes, Martin Kreh

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In 2011, Beeler and Hoilman generalised the game of peg solitaire to arbitrary connected graphs. Since then, peg solitaire and related games have been considered on many graph classes. In this paper, we introduce a variant of the game peg solitaire, called path-stick solitaire, which is played with sticks in edges instead of pegs in vertices. We prove several analogues to peg solitaire results for that game, mainly regarding different graph classes. Furthermore, we characterise, with very few exceptions, path-stick-solvable joins of graphs and provide some possible future research questions.

Accelerating Multiparametric Mri For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Shraddha Pandey Oct 2022

Accelerating Multiparametric Mri For Adaptive Radiotherapy, Shraddha Pandey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

MR guided Radiotherapy (MRgRT) marks an important paradigm shift in the field of radiotherapy. Superior tissue contrast of MRI offers better visualization of the abnormal lesions, as a result precise radiation dose delivery is possible. In case of online treatment planning, MRgRT offers better control of intratumoral motion and quick adaptation to changes in the gross tumor volume. Nonetheless, the MRgRT process flow does suffer from some challenges that limit its clinical usability. The primary aspects of MRgRT workflow are MRI acquisition, tumor delineation, dose map prediction and administering treatment. It is estimated that the acquisition of MRI takes around …

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem Oct 2022

A Cluster Structure On The Coordinate Ring Of Partial Flag Varieties, Fayadh Kadhem

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of this dissertation is to show that the (multi-homogeneous) coordinate ring of a partial flag variety C[G/P_K^−] contains a cluster algebra for every semisimple complex algebraic group G. We use derivation properties and a canonical lifting map to prove that the cluster algebra structure A of the coordinate ring C[N_K] of a Schubert cell constructed by Goodearl and Yakimov can be lifted, in an explicit way, to a cluster structure \hat{A} living in the coordinate ring of the corresponding partial flag variety. Then we use a minimality condition to prove that the cluster algebra \hat{A} is equal …
