Comparative Instructor Attitudes Toward College Level English And Mathematics Experiences For Gifted High School Students, Bruce Vickers May 1987

Comparative Instructor Attitudes Toward College Level English And Mathematics Experiences For Gifted High School Students, Bruce Vickers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Samples derived from a mailed questionnaire were compared. The sample represented high school, community college and university instructors of mathematics and English. The Kentucky public schools sampled were equally represented among high school, community colleges and universities. The research indicated that of those instructors sampled a very high percentage (97.7%) feel that those high school students shown to be academically gifted would benefit from a college experience before high school graduation. The attitudes of those instructors sampled indicated that multiple criteria – grades, recommendations, standardized test scores and personal interview – were considered the preferred method of selection (82.5%). The …

On Root Invariants Of Periodic Classes In Exta(Z/2,Z/2), Paul L. Shick

Mathematics and Computer Science

We prove that if a class in the cohomology of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra is υn-periodic in the sense of [10[, then its root invariant must be υn+1-periodic, where υn denotes the nth generator of π∗(ΒΡ).

Logic And Proof For Mathematicians: A Twentieth Century Perspective, Calvin Jongsma May 1987

Logic And Proof For Mathematicians: A Twentieth Century Perspective, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

If there is one aspect of mathematics education that frustrates both students and teachers alike, it has got to be learning how to do valid proofs. Students often feel they really know the mathematics they're studying but that their teachers place some unreasonably stringent demands upon their arguments. Teachers, on the other hand, can't understand where their students get some of the wacky arguments they come up with. They argue in circles, they end up proving a different result from what they claim, they make false statements, they draw invalid inferences - it can be quite exasperating at times! Unfortunately, …

A Sharp Partitioning-Inequality For Non-Atomic Probability Measures Based On The Mass Of The Infimum Of The Measures, Theodore P. Hill May 1987

A Sharp Partitioning-Inequality For Non-Atomic Probability Measures Based On The Mass Of The Infimum Of The Measures, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

If μ1, ... ,μn are non-atomic probability measures on the same measurable space (S, F), then there is an F-measurable partition {Ai }ni = 1 of S so that μ1 (Ai )≥ (n – 1 + m)–1 for all i=1, ..., n, where m = ∥ Δni=1 μi∥ is the total mass of the largest measure dominated by each of the μi's; moreover, this bound is attained for all n≥1 and all m in [0, 1]. …

Least-Change Secant Updates Of Non-Square Matrices, Samih Kassem Bourji May 1987

Least-Change Secant Updates Of Non-Square Matrices, Samih Kassem Bourji

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In many problems involving the solution of a system of nonlinear equations, it is necessary to keep an approximation to the Jacobian matrix which is updated at each iteration. Computational experience indicates that the best updates are those that minimize some reasonable measure of the change to the current Jacobian approximation subject to the new approximation obeying a secant condition and perhaps some other approximation properties such as symmetry.

All of the updates obtained thus far deal with updating an approximation to an nxn Jacobian matrix. In this thesis we consider extending most of the popular updates to the non-square …

Partitioning General Probability Measures, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Suppose μ1, ..., μn are probability measures on the same measurable space (Ω, F). Then if all atoms of each μi have mass α or less, there is a measurable partition A1,..., An of Ω so that μi(Ai) ≥ Vn(α) for all i = 1, ... , n, where Vn(•) is an explicitly given piecewise linear nonincreasing continuous function on [0, 1]. Moreover, the bound Vn(α) is attained for all n and all α. Applications are given to L1 spaces, to …

Periodic Phenomena In The Classical Adams Spectral Sequence, Mark Mahowald, Paul L. Shick Mar 1987

Periodic Phenomena In The Classical Adams Spectral Sequence, Mark Mahowald, Paul L. Shick

Mathematics and Computer Science

We investigate certain periodic phenomena in the classical Adams spectral sequence which are related to the polynomial generators υn in π∗(ΒΡ). We define the notion of a class α in ExtΑ(Ζ/2,Ζ/2) being υn-periodic or υn-torsion and prove that classes that are υn-torsion are also υκ-torsion for all κ such that 0 ≤ κ ≤ n. This allows us to define a chromatic filtration of ExtΑ(Ζ/2,Ζ/2) paralleling the chromatic filtration of the Novikov spectral sequence Ε2-term …

Extensions Of Gromov Theory., Sumanta Guha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Gromov formulated and proved a very general Smale - Hirsch - Phillips type theorem. The theorem concerns the claseification of a class of cross-sections o of a smooth fibre bundle E X over a non-closed manifold X such that each r-jet j(0) satisfies an openness condition as well es a stability condition. Briefly, the openness condition is that each j(a) is a cross-section of some preacribed open subbundle of the bundle of r-jets of local oross- sections of EX, and. the etability condition is that this subbundle remain invarient under the action of the paeudogroup of local diffeo- morphisme of …

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr. Feb 1987

Multisectoral Model Of Income Distribution Poverty And Growth:Some Policy Exercies For Indian Economy., Debdas Bandyopadhyay Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The extent of poverty in any country depends upon two factors vlz, the average level of income anxd the degree of inequality in its distribution. The central theme in the continuing debate on the relationship between growth and poverty is whether past growth process in the developing countries has caused any signi.licant benefit to the poor. Kuznets (1955) was first to observe from cross country data that procosa of development is likely to be accompanied by increase in inequality, whhich would reverse itself only at a relatively advanced stage. This hypothesis has been subsequently confirned to some extent by several …

Doctoral Theses

The present thesis consists of three parts.Part I of the thesis is devoted to the study of regularity propertion of classes of sets obtained from 8-8 operations applied to the class of clopen set s. In particular, the classes of set s obtained by applying the hierarchy of increasingly complex R-operations {Rp,), are investing at ed. Our points of departure in this study are the recent works on R- sets by Hi nm an and Burgess. In this thesis we have unified the methods of Hinman and Burgess by extensively u sing the game quantifier and methods of inductive definability. …

The Existence Of Good Markov Strategies For Decision Processes With General Payoffs, Theodore P. Hill, Victor C. Prestien

Research Scholars in Residence

For countable-state decision processes (dynamic programming problems), a general class of objective functions is identified for which it is shown that good Markov strategies always exist. This class includes product and lim inf rewards, as well as practically all the classical dynamic programming expected payoff functions.

A Generalization Of Lyapounov's Convexity Theorem To Measures With Atoms, John Elton, Theodore P. Hill Feb 1987

A Generalization Of Lyapounov's Convexity Theorem To Measures With Atoms, John Elton, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

The distance from the convex hull of the range of an n-dimensional vector-valued measure to the range of that measure is no more than α n/2, where α is the largest (one-dimensional) mass of the atoms of the measure. The case α = 0 yields Lyapounov's Convexity Theorem; applications are given to the bisection problem and to the bang-bang principle of optimal control theory.

The Sharpness Of Some Cluster Set Results, D. Rung, Samih Obaid

Faculty Publications

We show that a recent cluster set theorem of Rung is sharp in a certain sense. This is accomplished through the construction of an interpolating sequence whose limit set is closed, totally disconnected and porous. The results also generalize some of Dolzenko's cluster set theorems.

Sorting And Selecting In Rounds, Nicholas Pippenger Jan 1987

Sorting And Selecting In Rounds, Nicholas Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present upper bounds for sorting and selecting the median in a fixed number of rounds. These bounds match the known lower bounds to within logarithmic factors. They also have the merit of being “explicit modulo expansion”; that is, probabilistic arguments are used only to obtain expanding graphs, and when explicit constructions for such graphs are found, explicit algorithms for sorting and selecting will follow. Using the best currently available explicit constructions for expanding graphs, we present the best currently known explicit algorithms for sorting and selecting in rounds.

On Endomorphism And Automorphisms Of Some Torsion-Free Modules, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The relationship between the endomorphism ring and the automorphism group of an abelian p-group has been extensively investigated. It is known that theautomorphism group need not generate the full endomorphism ring. In this paper we investigate the analagous problem for torsion free modules over a complete discrete valuation ring obtaining similar results.

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the limited entry alternative of fishery management by examining the history of a particular limited entry scheme: the Massachusetts inshore commercial lobster fishery license limitation law. A review was made of existing limited entry theory, followed by a description of limited entry programs extant in U.S. fisheries. The legislative and political histories of the Massachusetts lobster fishery limited entry program was then examined. The limited entry law was then analyzed by comparing what actually occurred with what is supposed to occur according to limited entry theory. A quantitative analysis of changes in …

Rigid And Nonrigid Achirality, Erica Flapan Jan 1987

Rigid And Nonrigid Achirality, Erica Flapan

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

In order to completely characterize a molecule it is useful to understand the symmetries of its molecular bond graph in 3-space. For many purposes the most important type of symmetry that a molecule can exhibit is mirror image symmetry. However, the question of whether a molecular graph is equivalent to its mirror image has different interpretations depending on what assumptions are made about the rigidity of the molecular structure. If there is a deformation of 3-space taking a molecular bond graph to its mirror image then the molecule is said to be topologically achiral. If a molecular graph can be …

Proof And Intuition, Michael Detlefsen Jan 1987

Proof And Intuition, Michael Detlefsen

ACMS Journal 2004

This paper aims to give a clear exposition of two critiques of logicism. The intuitionist, Brouwer, is best known for rejecting the law of the excluded middle (his "special critique.") The paper argues that Brouwer's "general critique" is deeper and more extensive than this. That is, Brouwer is arguing that mathematical knowledge requires a kind of direct mathematical experience, analogous to sensory experience and this cannot be attained simply by linguistic operations independently of experience. It also discusses Poincare's critiques - that there is a huge difference between genuine mathematical insight and an ability to logically manipulate mathematical truths and …
