The Compensatory Bargaining Set Of A Big Boss Game, Gianfranco Gambarelli, Irinel C. Dragan Jul 1989

The Compensatory Bargaining Set Of A Big Boss Game, Gianfranco Gambarelli, Irinel C. Dragan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

The bargaining sets have been introduced as concepts of solution for cooperative n—person games with side payments by R.J.Aumann and M. Maschler (1964) and studied further by many authors. A comparison of various solutions for games with coalition structures has been done by R.J.Aumann and J.Dreze (1974). In a previous paper of one of the authors I.Dragan (1988), a modified concept of bargaining set, called the compensatory bargaining set, has been introduced and a combinatorial characterization of the noncore elements in the compensatory bargaining set has been obtained. This characterization becomes particularly simple for some classes of games. One of …

On The Dimension Of Bivariate Superspline Spaces, Tian-Xiao He Jul 1989

On The Dimension Of Bivariate Superspline Spaces, Tian-Xiao He

Scholarship

A bivariate piecewise polynomial function of total degree d on some grid partition △ that has rth order continuous partial derivatives everywhere may have higher-order partial derivatives at the vertices of the grid partition. In finite element considerations and in the construction of vertex splines, it happens that only those functions with continuous partial derivatives of order higher than r at the vertices are needed to give the same full approximation order as the entire space of piecewise polynomials. This is certainly the case for d > 4r + 1. Such piecewise polynomial functions are called supersplines. This …

Best Approximation With Geometric Constraints, Yuesheng Xu Jul 1989

Best Approximation With Geometric Constraints, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of best approximation with certain geometric constraints. Two major problem areas are considered: best Lp approximation to a function in Lp (0,1) by convex functions, (m, n)-convex functions, (m, n)-convex functions and (m, n)-convex splines, for 1 < p < ∞ , and best uniform approximation to a continuous function by convex functions, quasi-convex functions and piecewise monotone functions.

Contribution To The Theory Of Stochastic Games., Sagnik Sinha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

A mathematical theory of Games of Strategy was born in several stages between 1928 and 1941. John von Neumann is known as its father. The culmination of the pioneering work of von Neumann and Morgenstern was the publication of the Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (Ref.28] in 1944. Ik is snid of the book . posterity may regard this book as one of the major scientifie achievements of the first half of the twentieth century. Emphasizing a new approach to competetive behaviour through a mathematical reduction to suitable games of strategy, this giant work laid bare a host of …

Simulated Annealing On Np-Complete Problems, Russell W. Howell Jun 1989

Simulated Annealing On Np-Complete Problems, Russell W. Howell

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989

The Random House Dictionary defines anneal as " ... to free (glass, metals, etc.) from internal stress by heating and gradually cooling." In the physical world, impurities are annealed out of a substance by heating it to a high temperature. As it is cooled, its molecular structure gradually settles into a stable "low-energy" configuration. It is important to cool the substance slowly, especially at lower temperatures, so that impurities do not get "frozen" into place. With careful cooling, a low-energy state can eventually be reached. This state may not be the one with the lowest potential energy, where the spins …

A Course On Mathematics And The Christian Faith, W. David Laverell, Carl J. Sinke

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989

The January interim term at Calvin College provides an opportunity for developing and teaching courses outside a normal major program. As a result faculty members are frequently given the interim off to provide time for research and development of new courses. In 1987 we were given such a leave in order to pursue the questions of the relationship between mathematics and the Christian Faith. One result was our presentation at the 1987 Association of Christians in the Mathematical Sciences conference. Immediately thereafter we began to develop a specific interim course based on our studies. We offered the course during the …

The Bisexual Galton-Watson Branching Process, David M. Hull Jun 1989

The Bisexual Galton-Watson Branching Process, David M. Hull

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989

I would like to present the bisexual Galton-Watson branching process. The word "bisexual" indicates that we will be considering a population of two sexes--which will be designated as the usual male and female. Here is a brief overview of what I would like to cover.

  1. The bisexual process motivated: why is it needed?
  2. The standard Galton-Watson branching process.
  3. The state of affairs regarding two-sex models.
  4. The nuts and bolts of the bisexual Galton-Watson branching process (parameters defined and how it works).
  5. A review of published bisexual results to date.
  6. What is to come?

A Tutorial On Prolog, Russell C. Bjork Jun 1989

A Tutorial On Prolog, Russell C. Bjork

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989

PROLOG is a programming language based on the use of mathematical logic—specifically the first order predicate calculus. The name is a contraction for “Programming in Logic”. PROLOG was developed in 1972 by Phillippe Roussel of the AI Group (Groupe d’Intelligence Artificielle) of the University of Marseille. Specifically, it is an outgrowth of research there on automatic theorem proving. PROLOG has been widely used by AI researchers in Europe and Japan. In fact, the Japanese have made it the basis for the software side of their “Fifth Generation” computer project. PROLOG is currently used in a wide variety of areas, not …

Beauty In Mathematics: Some Theological Implications, David L. Neuhouser

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1989

It may come as a surprise to some that science or mathematics could be considered beautiful, but many prominent sciences and mathematicians from around the world have made such claims. Furthermore, the beauty of mathematics and order of the universe inspired some of the greatest developments in science and mathematics. This paper examines the beauty of mathematics and what scientists and other individuals have said about the subject.

Homoclinic Bifurcations With Nonhyperbolic Equilibria, Bo Deng May 1989

Homoclinic Bifurcations With Nonhyperbolic Equilibria, Bo Deng

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A general geometric approach is given for bifurcation problems with homoclinic orbits to nonhyperbolic equilbrium points of ordinary differential equations. It consists of a special normal form called admissible variables, exponential expansion, strong A-lemma, and Lyapnunov- Schmidt reduction for the Poincare maps under Sil'nikov variables. The method is based on the Center Manifold Theory, the contraction mapping principle, and the Implicit Function Theorem.

Applications Of The Calculus For Factorial Arrangements And Allied Topics., Mausumi Bose Dr. Mar 1989

Applications Of The Calculus For Factorial Arrangements And Allied Topics., Mausumi Bose Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis deals primarily with the application of the calculus for factorial ar- rangements (Kurkjian and Zelen (1962, 1963)) to various designs. The thesis has been divided into six chapters. We have made extensive use of Kronecker products and various other results from matrix theory. The results in the first two chapters involve the use of projection operators. In the first four chapters, different classes of factorial experiments have been studied by applying the calculus. Chapter 5 deals with another class of designs called repeated measurements designs (RMD's). It has been shown that the calculus for factorial arrangements serves as a …

On Uniform And Relative Distribution In The Brauer Group, Gary R. Greenfield

Department of Math & Statistics Technical Report Series

In this progress/technical report our objective is twofold. First, to formalize and expand upon remarks appearing in [7] concerning the relativization of the fundamental identity in the setting of the Brauer group of a ring, and second to exhibit a construction which shows how to interpret uniform distribution as a homological phenomenon.

Isometries Homotopic To The Identity, Douglas A. Norris Mar 1989

Isometries Homotopic To The Identity, Douglas A. Norris

Mathematics and Computer Science

The types of surfaces which admit nontrivial isometries homotopic to the identity are classified up to diffeomorphism. In dimension three this is done for complete manifolds of constant negative curvature. Three-dimensional visibility manifolds that admit nontrivial isometries homotopic to the identity are shown to be diffeomorphic to a product L x RI.

Connections On Small Vertex Model., R. Srinivasan Dr. Feb 1989

Connections On Small Vertex Model., R. Srinivasan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis is devoted to the classification of a special class of commuting squares called vertex models. The first chapter is indroductory in nature and is included for the sake of completeness and convenience of reference. It starts with the description of the basic construction and the invariants called the principal and dual graph for an inclusion of II1, factors. After defining a commuting square we describe the special class of commuting squares called vertex model given by an Mn, O Mk, biunitary matrix . Finally we state some results, without proof, about vertex nodels from (KSC).The second chapter in the …
