A New Model Of The Molecular Bond, Donald Greenspan Jan 1991

A New Model Of The Molecular Bond, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

It is assumed, on the basis of recent supercomputer calculations, that electrons attract, rather than repel. The consequences are explored by means of three dimensional, molecular mechanics type simulations of ground state [see pdf for notation]. Using spectroscopic data, it is shown that, in every case, the resulting vibrational frequencies and molecular diameters are entirely in agreement with experiment.

Some Remarks On Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces, Daniel Alpay Jan 1991

Some Remarks On Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces, Daniel Alpay

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The one-to-one correspondence between positive functions and reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces was extended by L. Schwartz to a (onto, but not one-to-one) correspondence between difference of positive functions and reproducing kernel Krein spaces. After discussing this result, we prove that matrix value function K(z,ω) symmetric and jointly analytic in z and ω in a neighborhood of the origin is the reproducing kernel of a reproducing kernel Krein space. We conclude with an example showing that such a function can be the reproducing kernel of two different Krein spaces.

Refined Approximations Of The Solutions Of A Coupled System With Turning Points, W. A. Harris, S. Shao Jan 1991

Refined Approximations Of The Solutions Of A Coupled System With Turning Points, W. A. Harris, S. Shao

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We present in this paper the asymptotic behavior of solutions of a boundary value problem for a coupled system of differential equations u″ = ν, εν″ + f(u, u′)ν′ - g(x, u, u′)ν = 0 on a compact interval I, where f(u, u′) has turning points in I. We provide upper and lower solutions, β(x, ε) and α(x, ε), respectively, which bound solutions, exhibiting boundary layer and interior layer behavior, for which limε → 0+ {β(x, ε) - α(x, ε)} = 0 uniformly on I.

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith Jan 1991

On Separable Torsion- Free Modules Of Countable Density Character, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith

Articles

The endomorphism algebras of modules of large cardinalities have been extensively studied in recent years using the combinatorial set-theoretic techniques of Shelah-the so-called black-box methods (see, e.g., [4, 5, 151). Despite the spectacular success of these methods, they are not suitable for realization theorems at small carinalities. Of course at the level of countability (or rather more generally for cardinals ~2’~) there are in some cases the original dramatic results of A. L. S. Corner [ 1, 2, 31 and the more recent generalizations of Gobel and May [ 111. Very recently the study of realization problems at cardinalities

Analysis And Finite Element Approximation Of Optimal Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Dirichlet Controls, M. D. Gunzburger, L. S. Hou, Tom Svobodny Jan 1991

Analysis And Finite Element Approximation Of Optimal Control Problems For The Stationary Navier-Stokes Equations With Dirichlet Controls, M. D. Gunzburger, L. S. Hou, Tom Svobodny

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Optimal control problems for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations are examined from analytical and numerical points of view. The controls considered are of Dirichlet type, that is, control is effected through the velocity field on (or the mass flux through) the boundary; the functionals minimized are either the viscous dissipation or the L4-distance of candidate flows to some desired flow. We show that optimal solutions exist and justify the use of Lagrange multiplier techniques to derive a system of partial differential equations from which optimal solutions may be deduced. We study the regularity of solutions of this system. The n, finite …

Minimax-Optimal Stop Rules And Distributions In Secretary Problems, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel Jan 1991

Minimax-Optimal Stop Rules And Distributions In Secretary Problems, Theodore P. Hill, Ulrich Krengel

Research Scholars in Residence

For the secretary (or best-choice) problem with an unknown number N of objects, minimax-optimal stop rules and (worst-case) distributions are derived, under the assumption that $N$ is a random variable with unknown distribution, but known upper bound n. Asymptotically, the probability of selecting the best object in this situation is of order of (log n)-1. For example, even if the only information available is that there are somewhere between 1 and 100 objects, there is still a strategy which will select the best item about one time in five.

When Is Every Order Ideal A Ring Ideal?, Suzanne Larson Jan 1991

When Is Every Order Ideal A Ring Ideal?, Suzanne Larson

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

A lattice-ordered ring R is called an OIRI-ring if each of its order ideals is a ring ideal. Generalizing earlier work of Basly and Triki, OIRI-rings are characterized as those f-rings R such that R/I is contained in an f-ring with an identity element that is a strong order unit for some nil l-ideal I of R. In particular, if P(R) denotes the set of nilpotent elements of the f-ring R, then R is an OIRI-ring if and only if R/P(R) is contained in an f-ring with an identity element that is a strong order unit.

A Study Of The Survival Rate Of The Hepatitis B Virus, James Abraham Houck Iii Jan 1991

A Study Of The Survival Rate Of The Hepatitis B Virus, James Abraham Houck Iii

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of many viruses transmitted through the blood or body fluids. This paper concentrates on a mathematical study of the survival rate of HBV. Using data which includes the survival time for individuals who were diagnosed as being affected by HBV and those who died from HBV, we fit non-linear models to study the survival time for people affected by the virus. Survival probabilities suggest an exponential curve for the survival time. We also consider a pure death process which is a stochastic model for the survival time of the individuals affected. Our results show …

Ein Beitrag Zur Klassifikation Von Koppelkurven (A Contribution To The Classification Of Coupler Curves), Jorg Feldvoss, Wolfram Funk, Peter Tolle

University Faculty and Staff Publications

A study of the coupler curves of four-bar and Watt mechanisms is undertaken either theoretically or based on a computer program that is integrated in a CAD-System. This leads even in the case of four-far linkages to some new insights concerning the existence of nodes and cusps. The possible real singularities of non-degenerate coupler curves of the Watt mechanism are determined and by means of our computer program, we demonstrate their difficult structure.

Best Lp Aapproximation With Multiple Constraints For 1 ⩽ P < ∞, J. J. Swetits, S. E. Weinstein, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The problem considered in this paper is best Lp approximation with multiple constraints for 1 ⩽ p < ∞. Characterizations of best Lp approximations from multiple n-convex splines and functions are established and the relationship between them is investigated. Applications to best monotone convex approximation are studied.

Estimation In A Marked Poisson Error Recapture Model Of Software Reliability, Rajan Gupta Jan 1991

Estimation In A Marked Poisson Error Recapture Model Of Software Reliability, Rajan Gupta

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Nayak's (1988) model for the detection, removal, and recapture of the errors in a computer program is extended to a larger family of models in which the probabilities that the successive programs produce errors are described by the tail probabilities of discrete distribution on the positive integers. Confidence limits are derived for the probability that the final program produces errors. A comparison of the asymptotic variances of parameter estimates given by the error recapture and by the repetitive-run procedure of Nagel, Scholz, and Skrivan (1982) is made to determine which of these procedures efficiently uses the test time.

Search Designs And Other Topic In Fractional Replication., Kashinath Chatterjee Dr. Dec 1990

Search Designs And Other Topic In Fractional Replication., Kashinath Chatterjee Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis primarily deals with search designs (see Srivastava (1975)) of various types for general symmetric and asymmetric factorials. The thesis also considers some other types on fractional factorials. We have made use of Kronecker products and various other results from matrix theory. In the first four chapters, different types of search designs have been studied. Chapter 5A considers the construction of orthogonal main-effect plans for general factorial experiments under the presence of a linear time trend. Chapter 5B extends the calculus for factorial arrangements to a fractional factorial set-up and examines critically the proportional frequency plans from the point of …

Studies In Rapid Kinetic Reactions By Quasi-Quantum Mechanical, Conservative Methodology, Donald Greenspan Dec 1990

Studies In Rapid Kinetic Reactions By Quasi-Quantum Mechanical, Conservative Methodology, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Simulations are made of prototype, ground state, rapid kinetic reactions for A+BC, in which B, and C are hydrogen atoms and BC is a hydrogen molecule. We study cases in which B and C first unbind, and then A, B, and C undergo complex, three-body, oscillatory behavior in accordance with the Morse potential. It is shown that, in every case, one of A, or C is ejected and the remaining two atoms form an H2 bond with precisely correct ground state energy, frequency, and bond length. Pico second trajectories are described and discussed. The numerical method employed conserves the system's …

A Method For Approximating The Solution Set Of A System Of Convex Inequalities By Polytopes, Yair Censor, Dan Butnariu Dec 1990

A Method For Approximating The Solution Set Of A System Of Convex Inequalities By Polytopes, Yair Censor, Dan Butnariu

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

In this note a method for computing approximations by polytopes of the solution set [see pdf for notation] of a system of convex inequalities is presented. It is shown that such approximations can be determined by an algorithm which converges in finitely many steps when the solution set of the given system of inequalities is bounded. In this case, the algorithm generates "inner" and "outer' approximations having the Hausdorff distance to each other (and to the set [see pdf for notation]) not greater than an a priori fixed [see pdf for notation] and having their extremal points in [see pdf …

Generalized Gradient Methods For Solving Locally Lipschitz Feasibility Problems, Dan Butnariu Dec 1990

Generalized Gradient Methods For Solving Locally Lipschitz Feasibility Problems, Dan Butnariu

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

In this paper we study the behavior of a class of iterative algorithms for solving feasibility problems, that is finite systems of inequalities [see pdf for notation], where each [see pdf for notation] is a locally Lipschitz functional on a Hilbert space X. We show that, under quite mild conditions, the algorithms studied in this note, if converge, then they approximate a solution of the feasibility given problem, provided that the feasibility problem is consistent. We prove several convergence criteria showing that, when the envelope of the functionals [see pdf for notation], is sufficiently "regular", then the algorithms converge. The …

Some Facts About Cwat-Sets, Martin Wattenburg Nov 1990

Some Facts About Cwat-Sets, Martin Wattenburg

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In [1] and [2], Sherman and Atkins, in connection with a problem in statistics, introduced a generalization of the concept of a subgroup of Z2. These generalized subgroups, which we call CWAT-sets (where "CWAT" is an acronym for "Closed With A Twist" ), have a rich algebraic structure. In this paper we establish some simple combinatorial facts about CWAT-sets, as well as provide two construction methods, prove a divisibility theorem, and make a classification conjecture.

Accurate Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Numerical Methodology, Donald Greenspan Oct 1990

Accurate Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Numerical Methodology, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

A quasi-quantum mechanical method in which energy is determined by quantum mechanics and motion by Newtonian mechanics is studied by combining it with numerical methodology which conserves energy exactly at each time step. Application is made to the study of the diameter and vibrational frequency of the ground state H2 molecule. The numerical results agree exactly with experimental and quantum mechanical results.

Maximal Order Three-Rewriteable Subgroups Of Symmetric Groups, John T. O'Bryan Sep 1990

Maximal Order Three-Rewriteable Subgroups Of Symmetric Groups, John T. O'Bryan

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

Recently, Burns and Goldsmith [2] characterized the maximal order Abelian subgroups of the symmetric groups using elementary techniques and the results of Hoffman [5]. This classification could also be directly inferred from the results of Kovacs and Praeger [7]. A natural extension would be to consider the weaker, more general form of commutativity, three-rewriteability. The purpose of this paper is to completely characterize the maximal order three-rewriteable subgroups of the symmetric groups.

Berry-Esseen-Type Bounds For Signed Linear Rank Statistics With A Broad Range Of Scores, Munsup Seoh Sep 1990

Berry-Esseen-Type Bounds For Signed Linear Rank Statistics With A Broad Range Of Scores, Munsup Seoh

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The Berry-Esseen-type bounds of order N−1/2 for the rate of convergence to normality are derived for the signed linear rank statistics under the hypothesis of symmetry. The results are obtained with a broad range of regression constants and scores (allowed to be generated by discontinuous score generating functions, but not necessarily) restricted by only mild conditions, while almost all previous results are obtained with continuously differentiable score generating functions. Furthermore, the proof is very short and elementary, based on the conditioning argument.
