Tests Of Random Number Generators Using Ising Model Simulations, Paul D. Coddington Jan 1996

Tests Of Random Number Generators Using Ising Model Simulations, Paul D. Coddington

Northeast Parallel Architecture Center

Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations require high-quality random number generators to ensure correct results. The contrapositive of this statement is also true – the quality of random number generators can be tested by using them in large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We have tested many commonly used random number generators with high precision Monte Carlo simulations of the 2-d Ising model using the Metropolis, Swendsen-Wang, and Wolff algorithms. This work is being extended to the testing of random number generators for parallel computers. The results of these tests are presented, along with recommendations for random number generators for high-performance computers, particularly for …

Massachusetts Angler Typologies: The Recreation Specialization Approach, Jonathan S. O'Neil Jan 1996

Massachusetts Angler Typologies: The Recreation Specialization Approach, Jonathan S. O'Neil

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

As the abundance of fish stocks in the Northeast continues to decline, the need to regulate the marine recreational catch is a topic receiving much attention. Yet, the move to manage recreational anglers' fishing activities raises a host of new questions. How should the resource be allocated among different groups of fishermen? Which group should take precedence over others; or should resources be divided equally among all? To manage the Massachusetts recreational fishery, many of these questions will have to be answered to ensure the success of conservation goals. With a comprehensive understanding of anglers and their relationship to fishery …

Characterization Of A Class Of Sigmoid Functions With Applications To Neural Networks, Anil Ravindran Menon, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Sanjay Ranka

College of Engineering and Computer Science - Former Departments, Centers, Institutes and Projects

Sigmoid functions, whose graphs are “S-shaped” curves, appear in a great variety of contexts, such as the transfer functions in many neural networks. Their ubiquity is no accident; these curves are among the simplest non-linear curves, striking a graceful balance between linear and non-linear behavior. .. This paper undertakes a study of two classes of sigmoids: the simple sigmoids, defined to be odd, asymptotically bounded, completely monotone functions in one variable, and the Hyperbolic sigmoids, a proper subset of simple sigmoids and a natural generalization of the hyperbolic tangent. The class of hyperbolic sigmoids includes a surprising number of well …

Inverse Limits On [0,1] Using Logistic Bonding Maps, Marcy Barge, William Thomas Ingram Jan 1996

Inverse Limits On [0,1] Using Logistic Bonding Maps, Marcy Barge, William Thomas Ingram

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper we investigate inverse limits on [0,1] using a single bonding map chosen from the logistic family, fλ (x) = 4λx(1-x) for 0 ≤ λ ≤ 1. Many interesting continua occur as such inverse limits from arcs to indecomposable continua. Among other things we observe that up through the Feigenbaum limit the inverse limit is a point or is hereditarily decomposable and otherwise the inverse limit contains an indecomposable continuum. © 1996 Elsevier Science B.V. Operations With The Periodic Decimal Expansions, H. Ardahan Jan 1996

Operations With The Periodic Decimal Expansions, H. Ardahan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we prove the rules of direct addition and subtraction for the finite decimal expansions of fractions which are periodic. It has been shown that these rules are valid for the fractions which can be expanded as a periodic decimal with p figures in the period or have the mixed decimal part containing \nu non-periodic and p periodic figures. Also, it has been given a rule of multiplication for these periodic decimals by 10^{\nu}, \nu\in\Bbb N. Last of all, if a rational fraction has a period of length p, then it can be expressed by a decimal expansion, …

Modular Spaces And K-Widths, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Grzegorz Lewicki

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In this paper, we show that the ball measure of noncompactness of a modular space Xp is equal to the limit of its K -widths when p is a left continuous, s-convex modular function, without any ∆2-condition. We also obtain a similar result for SF-spaces, when the SF-norm N is uniformly continuous.

The Role Of The Federal Aid In Sportfish Restoration Program In Promoting State Marine Artificial Reef Development Activities, Loren Clark Evans Jan 1996

The Role Of The Federal Aid In Sportfish Restoration Program In Promoting State Marine Artificial Reef Development Activities, Loren Clark Evans

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The passage of the Wallop-Breaux Amendments to the Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration Program (FASRP), in 1984, significantly increased the funding available to states participating in the Program. Subsequently, the FASRP became the largest single source of funding for state marine artificial reef development activities. In recent years, there has been concern among program constituents that FASRP funds are not being utilized as intended. The principle question of the current research focused on how effective FASRP subsidies have been in providing meaningful benefits to state fisheries management programs. Specifically, the research focused on the application of FASRP monies in promoting …

Linear Topologic Invariants And Their Applications To Isomorphic Classification Of Generalized Power Spaces, V. Zahariuta Jan 1996

Linear Topologic Invariants And Their Applications To Isomorphic Classification Of Generalized Power Spaces, V. Zahariuta

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In the present survey generalized linear topological invariants are considered as a development of classical invariants of Kolmogorov and Pelczynski (approximative and diametral dimensions). It is realized a geometric idea to construct some new invariant characteristics by applying of classical characteristics (diameter or entropy-like characteristics) to some symplest interpolational constructions under neighborhoods, taken from a given basis of neighborhoods of zero. It is considered various applications to isomorphic classification of generalized power K\"{o}the spaces (in particular, tensor products of finite and infinite type power series spaces, spaces of analytic and infinitely differentiable vector-valued functions, spaces of analytic functions of several …

On Affine Selection And Separation Of Vector Valued Functions, S. Alpay, Z. Ercan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let K be a Choquet simplex, E a Fr\'{e}chet space and \Phi: K \ra 2^E a map such that \Phi(x) is closed and convex for each x \in K. A sufficient condition is given for \Phi to have a continuous affine selection. This is employed to prove a separation theorem for vector valued semicontinuous functions from a Choquet simplex into an ordered Fr\'{e}chet space.

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96 Jan 1996

The B-Spline Wavelet Recurrence Relation And B-Spline Wavelet Interpolation, Patrick J. Crowley '96

Honors Projects

In most signal processing applications, a given range of data is best described by a set of local characteristics as opposed to a single global characteristic. In image processing, for example, a region of an image that contains numerous edges is best described as a region whose pixel color values change abruptly, i.e., they are not continuous values of color. A region of constant color, or gradually changing color, is best described as a region whose pixel values are constant, or whose values increase linearly by some factor. It is advantageous to represent this data with signals capable of adapting …

Data Compression Based On The Cubic B-Spline Wavelet With Uniform Two-Scale Relation, S. K. Yang, C. H. Cooke Jan 1996

Data Compression Based On The Cubic B-Spline Wavelet With Uniform Two-Scale Relation, S. K. Yang, C. H. Cooke

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

The aim of this paper is to investigate the potential artificial compression which can be achieved using an interval multiresolution analysis based on a semiorthogonal cubic B-spline wavelet. The Chui-Quak [1] spline multiresolution analysis for the finite interval has been modified [2] so as to be characterized by natural spline projection and uniform two-scale relation. Strengths and weaknesses of the semiorthogonal wavelet as regards artificial compression and data smoothing by the method of thresholding wavelet coefficients are indicated.

Minimum Path Problems In Normed Spaces, Reflection And Refraction, Michael Golomb, Mostafa Ghandehari Jan 1996

Minimum Path Problems In Normed Spaces, Reflection And Refraction, Michael Golomb, Mostafa Ghandehari

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

The main minimum (or extremum) path problem in this paper deals with the "law of refraction" at a curve separating the plane into two parts with different norms. Analytic and geometric characterization for the point at which refraction takes place and formulas for the angles that this incident and refracted rays make with a fixed axis or with the normal to the curve are established. The case where the unit circle of the two norms are Euclidean circles with different radii leads to the traditional Snell's Law. The other problem deals with the "law of reflection" from a curve in …

Conservative Motion Of Discrete, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan Jan 1996

Conservative Motion Of Discrete, Hexahedral Gyroscope, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Gyroscopic motion is simulated by applying a molecular dynamics formulation to a rigid hexahedron. The conservative dynamical differential equations are solved numerically in such a fashion that all the system invariants are preserved. Examples which included precession, nutation, and a combination of looping and cusp formation are described and discussed.
