Strategies Community College Mexican American Adult College Algebra Students Use When Graphing Function Transformations, Roxana Pamela Jimenez
Strategies Community College Mexican American Adult College Algebra Students Use When Graphing Function Transformations, Roxana Pamela Jimenez
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study pursued to describe the different strategies Mexican American adult students in a local community college used to graph function transformations. Participants in the study were purposefully selected using a criterion sampling to ensure participants were atypical, above average students between the ages 18-22, and had a final course average of 89.5-100 in College Algebra. Three research questions were examined 1) In what ways do Mexican American adult college students graph a function transformation? 2) Which strategies do students implement when graphing a function transformation? Qualitative research methods using think aloud semi-structured interviews were used in this …

A Combinatorial Proof Of Supercranks For Partitions With A Fixed Number Of Parts, Jacob J. Gutierrez
Theses and Dissertations
In a previous paper by Eichhorn and Kronholm, a selection of supercranks for p(n,m) was established by generating functions. In this paper we will reprove this result with combinatorial witnesses for the selection of supercranks via integer lattice points.
Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Developmental Mathematics Students In A Community College, Benjamin Ortiz
Attitudes Towards Mathematics Of Developmental Mathematics Students In A Community College, Benjamin Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
Reformations to developmental mathematics aim to remove barriers for students entering higher education. Challenges like costly multi-course sequences and high failure rates prohibit students’ access to college-level math courses and prevent degree or certification completion. Understanding factors that foster student success is critical to increase student success. This study focuses on students’ attitudes towards mathematics, utilizing the novice-expert continuum through Code et al.’s Mathematical Attitude and Perceptions Survey (MAPS) instrument. Student expertise scores, including all MAPS dimensions and specific dimension scores, were assigned. Kruskal-Wallis Rank-Sum tests identified differences in student populations by course and attitude dimension. …

Theses and Dissertations
Mathematical tasks are vital in active learning, especially in situated learning. Adequate selection and appropriate implementation of tasks are steps toward success in engaging students for active learning. This study explored how a professional development (PD) workshop influences teacher participants’ capabilities in selecting, redesigning, implementing, and reflecting on mathematical tasks to promote situated and active learning. The teacher participants were Algebra 1 teachers from a South Texas secondary school. During the workshop, participants developed and implemented activities after being shown situated learning strategies to promote student-centered learning. They were required to design hypothetical dialogues to simulate their class practice before …
An Automatic Solver For Optimal Control Problems, Marcel Efren Benitez
An Automatic Solver For Optimal Control Problems, Marcel Efren Benitez
Theses and Dissertations
Optimal control theory is a study that is used to find a control for a dynamical system over a period of time such that a objection function is optimized. In this study we will be looking at optimal control problems for ordinary differential equations or ODEs and see that we can use an automatic solver using the forward-backward sweep using Matlab to solve for them from an 1 dimension to bounded cases and to nth dimension cases.

Complex Dimensions Of 100 Different Sierpinski Carpet Modifications, Gregory Parker Leathrum
Master's Theses
We used Dr. M. L. Lapidus's Fractal Zeta Functions to analyze the complex fractal dimensions of 100 different modifications of the Sierpinski Carpet fractal construction. We will showcase the theorems that made calculations easier, as well as Desmos tools that helped in classifying the different fractals and computing their complex dimensions. We will also showcase all 100 of the Sierpinski Carpet modifications and their complex dimensions.
An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson
An Exposition Of The Curvature Of Warped Product Manifolds, Angelina Bisson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The field of differential geometry is brimming with compelling objects, among which are warped products. These objects hold a prominent place in differential geometry and have been widely studied, as is evident in the literature. Warped products are topologically the same as the Cartesian product of two manifolds, but with distances in one of the factors in skewed. Our goal is to introduce warped product manifolds and to compute their curvature at any point. We follow recent literature and present a previously known result that classifies all flat warped products to find that there are flat examples of warped products …
Temporal Dynamics Of Faculty Hiring In Mathematics, Cody Fitzgerald, Yitong Huang, Katelyn Plaisier Leisman, Chad M. Topaz
Temporal Dynamics Of Faculty Hiring In Mathematics, Cody Fitzgerald, Yitong Huang, Katelyn Plaisier Leisman, Chad M. Topaz
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
University faculty hiring networks are known to be hierarchical and to exacerbate various types of inequity. Still, a detailed, historical understanding of hiring dynamics lacks in many academic fields. We focus on the field of mathematics, analyzing over 120,000 records from 150 institutions over seven decades to elucidate the temporal dynamics of hiring doctoral-granting (DG) faculty at the individual and departmental levels. We demonstrate that the disparity between the number of mathematics Ph.D.s awarded and the number of DG faculty positions filled has grown over time. Even institutions with the best records of DG faculty placement have experienced a temporal …
A History Of Complex Simple Lie Algebras, Avrila Frazier
A History Of Complex Simple Lie Algebras, Avrila Frazier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1869, prompted by his work in differential equations, Sophus Lie wondered about categorizing what he called “closed systems of commutative transformations,” while around the same time, Wilhelm Killing’s work on non-Euclidean geometry encountered related topics. As mathematicians recognized this as a division of abstract algebra, the area became known as “continuous transformation groups," but we now refer to them as Lie groups.
Patterns and structures emerged from their work, such as describing Lie groups in connection with their associated Lie algebras, which can be categorized in many important ways. In this paper, we focus on Lie algebras over the …
How An Instructor's Noticing For Equity Can Foster Students' Sense Of Belonging And Mathematical Confidence, Sthefania Espinosa
How An Instructor's Noticing For Equity Can Foster Students' Sense Of Belonging And Mathematical Confidence, Sthefania Espinosa
Theses and Dissertations
There are many aspects a teacher can notice inside the mathematics classroom, and the more a teacher notices, the more difficult it is to teach. In this study, I particularly focus on noticing for equity, which describes the role of the teacher in attending to students’ mathematical thinking through an equity lens that can allow the instructor to notice the aspects of classroom mathematical activity that can make students feel less or more empowered in their mathematical practices (van Es et al., 2017). There exists few research about how students perceive their instructor’s effort to promote equity and …
The Construction Of Khovanov Homology, Shiaohan Liu
The Construction Of Khovanov Homology, Shiaohan Liu
Master's Theses
Knot theory is a rich topic in topology that studies the how circles can be embedded in Euclidean 3-space. One of the main questions in knot theory is how to distinguish between different types of knots efficiently. One way to approach this problem is to study knot invariants, which are properties of knots that do not change under a standard set of deformations. We give a brief overview of basic knot theory, and examine a specific knot invariant known as Khovanov homology. Khovanov homology is a homological invariant that refines the Jones polynomial, another knot invariant that assigns a Laurent …
Travel Time Theory For Traffic Conservation Laws With Applications, Sergio Contreras
Travel Time Theory For Traffic Conservation Laws With Applications, Sergio Contreras
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Travel time is an important concept in various intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications. The concept is used in a wide array of applications, such as system planning, system performance, and optimization. Reducing the time required to travel between different points on a network is an important goal. Benefits include reducing time wasted in traveling, and keeping travelers satisfied. Thus, studying and reducing travel time in ITS is beneficial in different applications.
The classic density-based Lighthill Whitman Richards (LWR) equation for modeling traffic flow is the starting point in this dissertation. A more recent travel time dynamics function built on top …
On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez
On Dyadic Parity Check Codes And Their Generalizations, Meraiah Martinez
Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In order to communicate information over a noisy channel, error-correcting codes can be used to ensure that small errors don’t prevent the transmission of a message. One family of codes that has been found to have good properties is low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. These are represented by sparse bipartite graphs and have low complexity graph-based decoding algorithms. Various graphical properties, such as the girth and stopping sets, influence when these algorithms might fail. Additionally, codes based on algebraically structured parity check matrices are desirable in applications due to their compact representations, practical implementation advantages, and tractable decoder performance analysis. …

Generalized Vulnerability Measures Of Graphs, Julia Vanlandingham
Generalized Vulnerability Measures Of Graphs, Julia Vanlandingham
All Theses
Several measures of vulnerability of a graph look at how easy it is to disrupt the network by removing/disabling vertices. As graph-theoretical parameters, they treat all vertices alike: each vertex is equally important. For example, the integrity parameter considers the number of vertices removed and the maximum number of vertices in a component that remains. We consider the generalization of these measures of vulnerability to weighted vertices in order to better model real-world applications. In particular, we investigate bounds on the weighted versions of connectivity and integrity, when polynomial algorithms for computation exist, and other characteristics of the generalized measures.
Stochastic Optimal Control Of Conditional Mckean-Vlasov Equations With Jump And Markovian Switching, Charles Samuel Conly Sharp
Stochastic Optimal Control Of Conditional Mckean-Vlasov Equations With Jump And Markovian Switching, Charles Samuel Conly Sharp
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis obtains a number of results in stochastic optimal control for conditional McKean-Vlasov equations with jump and Markovian switching. First, we prove the uniqueness of the solutions and derive a relevant version of Itô's formula. We provide the dynamic programming principle and prove the associated verification theorem. A stochastic maximum principle is established. Further, we derive the relationship between dynamic programming and the stochastic maximum principle. Additionally, we utilize our stochastic maximum principle result for a mean-variance portfolio selection problem.

Turing Patterns In A P-Adic Fitzhugh-Nagumo System On The Unit Ball, L. F. Chacón-Cortés, C. A. Garcia-Bibiano, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We introduce discrete and p-adic continuous versions of the FitzHugh-Nagumo system on the one-dimensional p-adic unit ball. We provide criteria for the existence of Turing patterns. We present extensive simulations of some of these systems. The simulations show that the Turing patterns are traveling waves in the p-adic unit ball.
Quasipolynomials And The Unimodality Of Gaussian Polynomials, Paul Marsh
Quasipolynomials And The Unimodality Of Gaussian Polynomials, Paul Marsh
Theses and Dissertations
We illustrate a method to prove the unimodality of Gaussian polynomials ${N+m \brack m}$ for $m = 5$ and $6$, building upon Dr. Brandt Kronholm's work, which proved unimodality for $m = 2,3,$ and $4$. Our approach involves viewing coefficients $p(n,m,N)$ of Gaussian polynomials $N+m \brack m$ based on how far away $n$ is from the central coefficient $p(\lfloor\frac{mN}{2}\rfloor,m,N)$ and then creating generating functions for those coefficients. We then take the difference of neighboring generating functions and change those generating functions into quasipolynomials to verify that their coefficients are non-negative. While the generalization of these generating functions for the coefficients …

In confocal single-molecule FRET experiments, the joint distribution of FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution can reveal underlying molecular conformational dynamics via deviation from their theoretical Forster relationship. This shift is referred to as a dynamic shift. In this study, we investigate the influence of the free energy landscape in protein conformational dynamics on the dynamic shift by simulation of the associated continuum reaction coordinate Langevin dynamics, yielding a deeper understanding of the dynamic and structural information in the joint FRET efficiency and donor lifetime distribution. We develop novel Langevin models for the dye linker dynamics, including rotational dynamics, based …

Zero-Knowledge Reductions And Confidential Arithmetic, Marvin Jones
All Dissertations
The changes in computing paradigms to shift computations to third parties have resulted in the necessity of these computations to be provable. Zero-knowledge arguments are probabilistic arguments that are used to to verify computations without secret data being leaked to the verifying party.
In this dissertation, we study zero-knowledge arguments with specific focus on reductions. Our main contributions are:
- Provide a thorough survey in a variety of zero-knowledge techniques and protocols.
- Prove various results of reductions that can be used to study interactive protocols in terms of subroutines. Additionally, we identify an issue in the analogous definition of zero-knowledge for …

Jumping Frogs On Cyclic Graphs, Jake Mitchell
Jumping Frogs On Cyclic Graphs, Jake Mitchell
Honors College Theses
From the traditional game of Solitaire to modern video games like Candy Crush and Five Nights at Freddy’s, single-player games have captivated audiences for gener- ations. We investigate a lesser-known single-player game, the Jumping Frogs problem, on various classes of simple graphs, a graph with no multiple edges or looped ver- tices. We determine whether frogs can be stacked together on one vertex of a given graph. In a graph with k vertices and one frog on each vertex, the frogs must make legal jumps to form a stack of k frogs. The problem is known to be solvable on …
