Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Bio-Mimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Planetary surfaces often feature steep, uneven, and unpredictable terrain conditions that resemble some of the most challenging natural environments on Earth. In these terrestrial settings, certain animals have evolved to navigate complex landscapes with remarkable agility. One example is the mountain goat, an animal whose hooves have evolved for stable and precise movement across rocky, inclined surfaces. This biological adaptation provides a useful model for improving robotic mobility in planetary exploration. This study draws inspiration from that natural adaptation to develop a bio-mimetic robotic hoof designed to enhance traction, durability, and adaptability for extraterrestrial exploration. By replicating the mechanical properties …

Additive Manufacturing Of Metals: Mechanical Properties And Their Implications, Sean Chih
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Additive manufacturing of metals is a relatively new and groundbreaking approach to manufacturing high-performance components. However, variability in mechanical properties from the process creates a barrier before this manufacturing technique can be widely applied. Understanding when and where to use this manufacturing is also important to create components with efficiency and without harmful defects. The objective of this research is to evaluate the effects of build orientation, printing parameters, internal defects, thermal history, and residual stresses, post-processing heat treatments, and fatigue behavior on additively manufactured components. Literature-based research is conducted on commonly used metals for additive manufacturing, such as stainless …
Cavitation In Pumps And Propellers: Causes, Effects, Prevention, And Future Trends, Gillian Negron Burgos, Olivia Wilson
Cavitation In Pumps And Propellers: Causes, Effects, Prevention, And Future Trends, Gillian Negron Burgos, Olivia Wilson
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
In this research, we will explore cavitation in pumps and propellers, including its causes, effects on system performance, prevention methods, and future engineering solutions. Cavitation occurs when the local pressure of a flowing liquid drops below its vapor pressure, forming vapor-filled bubbles that collapse and damage mechanical components. Disciplines such as fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science contribute to understanding and mitigating cavitation in fluid machinery. When vapor bubbles collapse near metal surfaces, they generate localized shock waves that cause pitting, erosion, vibration, and noise. These effects reduce efficiency, increase maintenance requirements, and shorten the lifespan of rotating machinery used …
Intensification Of Thermal Energy Storage Systems Based On Sodium Nitrate, Hari Suthan V Mr
Intensification Of Thermal Energy Storage Systems Based On Sodium Nitrate, Hari Suthan V Mr
Theses and Dissertations
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems employing phase change materials (PCM) bridge the gap between thermal energy demand and supply. The low thermal conductivity of sodium nitrate (NaNO3), an inorganic PCM for high-temperature TES systems restricts charging and discharging kinetics, reducing system-level performance. This thesis investigates the intensification of sodium nitrate-based thermal energy storage systems through the incorporation of different classes of additives. Metal oxides (zinc oxide and aluminium oxide) and carbon-based materials (graphene oxide (GO) and expanded graphite (EG)), were incorporated into NaNO3 to improve its thermophysical properties (thermal conductivity, latent heat, specific heat).
Composites were prepared using low-energy ball …

Advancements in technology have enabled scientists and engineers in the synchrotron science domain to generate high-dimensional data. To conduct a machine learning study on these data, an analyst undergoes multiple analytical stages, including dimensionality reduction, predictive modelling, and uncertainty quantification (UQ).
To ensure reproducibility in science, it is necessary to document the semantic relationships among the stages of the analysis to enable provenance, interoperability, and knowledge reuse. In this work, we present a Semantic Data Management (SDM) framework rooted in FAIR principles that provides ontologies for UQ workflows. We illustrate the application of UQ ontology in synchrotron diffraction pattern analyses …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans
Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Quantum Dots And Gold Nanoparticles For Norovirus Biosensing Applications In Water Systems, Breanne Evans
Master's Theses
Rapid, reliable detection of viral pathogens remains a significant challenge across water-treatment and environmental monitoring systems, including drinking-water, wastewater, water reuse, and environmental surveillance applications. Waterborne viral contamination can pose substantial public-health risks, making early detection essential for protecting water quality and responding quickly to treatment failures or contamination events. Direct potable reuse (DPR) is one particularly demanding example because it requires continuous verification of treatment performance and the broader need for rapid virus monitoring extends across many water-treatment and environmental surveillance applications. Norovirus is a priority target because of its widespread occurrence in wastewater, environmental persistence, and exceptionally low …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The extrusion process in 3D concrete printing (3DCP) facilitates horizontal alignment of steel fibers along the printing direction, thus enhancing the load-bearing capacity of printed elements. However, such shear-induced fiber alignment is highly sensitive to rheological properties. This study investigates how variations in dynamic yield stress (τd) and plastic viscosity (μ), influence the extrudability, fiber orientation and dispersion, and anisotropic mechanical behavior of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). Five viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) types were incorporated at two content levels to modify the rheology of printable UHPC. Results showed that moderate VMA additions improved printability, whereas excessive contents markedly increased τd and μ; …

Microstructural Shielding And Advanced Fatigue Crack Analysis In The Presence Of Deformation Twinning, Seyed Ali Asli
All Dissertations
Design methods to mitigate fatigue failures have remained relatively stagnant, as engineers have relied on existing continuum-level models and adhered to the damage tolerance design methodology. Although damage-tolerant design has led to increased safety, extended component in-service life, and better life predictions, it still relies on maintenance routines to identify dangerous cracks. This research aims to test the hypothesis that bundles of deformation twin boundaries will increase the resistance to fatigue crack growth (FCG). Slip and twinning are two dominant mechanisms of plastic deformation in metals. Slip is more common in materials with face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures at room …

Nanoscale analysis often relies on instrument-mediated scientific imaging methods to capture visual signals that are difficult to observe, interpret, or quantify through ordinary perception alone. These domains are often characterized by low signal quality, limited annotations, complex morphology, non-natural visual statistics, and strong dependence on physical acquisition processes. This dissertation focuses on efficient visual computing for nanoscale imaging, with an emphasis on the representation, reconstruction, and analysis of high-resolution scientific visual data. In our early work, we relied on rule-based algorithms and conventional machine learning methods for feature extraction. However, these approaches struggle to scale with the increasing complexity and …

Atomic-Scale Investigation Of Functional Molecular Systems And Graphene Nanoribbons Using Scanning Probe Microscopy, A.M. Shashika D. Wijerathna
Physics Theses & Dissertations
Emerging molecular electronics, molecular devices, and carbon-based nanotechnologies increasingly rely on the precise control of molecular structures and interfaces at the atomic scale. Advancing these systems requires experimental techniques capable of resolving atomic structures, quantifying molecular behavior, and revealing the mechanisms governing nanoscale assembly. Scanning probe microscopy uniquely provides these capabilities by combining atomic-resolution imaging with local spectroscopy and manipulation. This dissertation employs ultra-high-vacuum low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (UHV-LT-STM) and qPlus atomic force microscopy (qPlus AFM) to address three complementary challenges: (i) atomic-scale characterization of complex supramolecular architectures, (ii) quantitative investigation of mechanically induced conformational switching of individual molecules, and …

To realize this potential, there is an increasing effort dedicated to understanding the mechanics of mycelium materials. This work presents a systematic review of our current understanding of the mechanics of mycelium materials with a specific focus on structure–property relationships. The review first explores how the mycelium’s fiber network structure varies depending on whether it is grown as a two-dimensional (2D) membrane, a cellular foam, or as a …
Investigating The Effects Of Draw Parameters On The Refractive Index Profiles Of Phosphosilicate Fibers, Brandi Baldus
Investigating The Effects Of Draw Parameters On The Refractive Index Profiles Of Phosphosilicate Fibers, Brandi Baldus
All Theses
P₂O₅ is a common dopant core material in silica-based glass optical fibers, in part due to its ability to increase the refractive index of silica, required for the fiber to guide light. However, P₂O₅-doped fibers can show a significant decrease in the refractive index profile compared to that of the parent preform. The question arises as to whether the refractive index decreasing could be a direct result of the fiber draw process and, if so, what is it about the draw process that causing such changes in phosphosilicate fibers. More specifically, this Thesis explores the hypothesis that these draw-induced reductions …

Mullite-structured oxides exhibit excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity, possess a low thermal expansion coefficient due to their unique crystal structure, and can eliminate the need for a barrier layer and simplify the preparation process as they contain no alkaline earth elements. Thus, they hold great promise as novel cathode materials for solid oxide fuel cells. In this work, a mullite-spinel-structured SmMn2O5-NiMn2O4 (SMO-NMO) composite cathode was one-step synthesized via a solid-liquid composite route, and its in-situ self-assembly enabled good compatibility with the electrolyte without any barrier layer. Characterization results showed that the SMO:NMO = …
