A Survey Of The Motivations For Reading Blogs By Jordanian University Media And Journalism Students, Naheda Moh'd Makhadmeh

Through the uses and gratifications theory, this study investigated the blog reading habits of Jordanian media and journalism students. Focus was given to the amount of time was spent reading blog, which blog categories were read, what motivated the reading of blogs, the students' perspectives on Arabic and English blogs, the students' knowledge of Jordanian media laws, and the relationship between student ender and their motivations in reading blogs. The researcher surveyed 192 Jordanian media and journalism students from Yarmouk University. The most compelling finding is that students are not reading blogs on a regular basis. "Reading" The Apprentice: Commerce, Culture, And The Manufacturing Of Reality, Sharon Simpson Terrell

This study examines the six original seasons of the reality television series The Apprentice as a postmodern, cultural artifact. Grounded in Burke’s (1967) “literature as equipment for living,” and Brummett’s (1984) consideration that televised content constitutes literature, the theory of “televised discourse as equipment for living” provided the guide to examine the series. Hall’s (1980) “reading against the grain” oppositional reading technique was utilized to interrogate both the manifest and latent content. The content of the series may indeed provide the audience with a guide to ideological beliefs of both commerce and culture, thereby creating a manufactured reality for its …

Analysis Of Teens' Attitudes Toward Health Claims On Branded, Prepackaged Foods, Michael J. Mcateer

In the 31 years since Stuart Hall added a defiant read to audience reception analysis, several scholars have broadened its use beyond television discourse. The current study used directed focus groups to attempt the same. Encoding/decoding (1980) revolutionized modern critical thought by expanding audience interpretation. Gone were notions that mass audiences simply bowed to their message overlords in every case without thought or conviction. The oppositional read was a breakthrough with few comparisons. Still present and true to standard critical thought, was the preferred read—an interpretation of text that closely followed authorial intent (Hall,1980, p. 107). The negotiated read yielded …
