The Sport Marketing Portfolio Matrix: A Theory-Integrative Exploration Of Fans’ “Buy,” “Hold,” And “Sell” Behaviors, Kirk Damon Aiken, Richard M. Campbell, Ajay Sukhdial

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The field of sport marketing lacks a comprehensive understanding of how fan behaviors link directly to sport products. This work introduces a model that accurately categorizes sport products, better recognizes fan behaviors, and simultaneously provides strategic guidance to sport managers. The model integrates the foremost theories of fan behavior with the financial theory of portfolio management. This novel perspective posits that sport fans should be viewed as “investors” who buy, hold, and sell athletes and teams. Fans manage their individual portfolios in line with personal goals, values, and social influences. The integration of theories bears significant implications regarding how sport …

Reducing The Negative Effects Of Uncontrollable Factors When Designing New Courses, Nusser Raajpoot, Ran Liu

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This paper seeks to introduce a novel course design method in academic literature. It uses advanced experimental designs to capture student preferences. It also makes a distinction between controllable and uncontrollable design factors and seeks to minimize the negative impact of uncontrollable design factors, ensuring a successful course introduction. We propose and test a design method that combines Taguchi experimental designs with discrete choice estimation where choice probabilities are used as input data for Taguchi's inner and outer arrays. Design efficiency is measured by calculating signal to noise (S/N) ratio, which accounts for both mean and variance of choice probabilities. …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Conspicuous Sport Consumption, Yukyoum Kim, Sun Hwan Hwang, Marshall Magnusen

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Conspicuous consumption is when consumers acquire luxury goods and services to help publicly demonstrate their desired economic and social status. Even though conspicuous consumption can help individuals experience social distinction and a heightened sense of self-esteem, much still needs to be known about this occurrence in the context of sport. Accordingly, the focus of this study was to examine antecedents (i.e., Expertise and Self-esteem) and outcomes (i.e., Satisfaction and Subjective Well-being) of conspicuous consumption of upscale sport goods. An empirical study was conducted with cyclists (n = 393). The research model was analyzed using simultaneous equations analysis. Expertise was shown …

Have You Found What You’Re Looking For?: How Values Orientations Affect Pro-Social Change After Transformative Service Experiences, Anne Hamby, Justine Rapp Farrell

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Past research on transformative service experiences suggests that participating individuals may experience positive, as well as (unintended) negative well-being consequences. Most of this work has examined aspects of the service provider and the service experience as a causal factor, underemphasizing aspects of the participants in such experiences as a determinant. Implementing a longitudinal design in the context of a cross-country bike trip to benefit multiple sclerosis, the authors investigate how changes in participants' civic attitudes and skills, as well as perceived personal change and connection to the experience, may depend upon the participants' underlying values orientation. Emerging findings indicate that …

College Students’ Purchase Behaviors Of Single-Serve Premium Juices, Robin Hardin, Michelle L. Childs, Win G-Y Koo, Kwangho Park Sep 2022

College Students’ Purchase Behaviors Of Single-Serve Premium Juices, Robin Hardin, Michelle L. Childs, Win G-Y Koo, Kwangho Park

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

There has been a surge in demand for premium single-serve juices, and college students may be in the forefront of this growing trend because of the perceived social status accompanied by their consumption. External influence (i.e., peer influence and social status) emerged as a component of motivation for the use of premium juices. Findings contribute to Veblen’s theory of conspicuous consumption, demonstrating that consumer motivation for status-laden products occurs even for consumable products that are relatively low cost.

The Stereotypical Perception Of A Spokesperson In A Sports Advertisement, Trinity Lennon

Honors Projects in Marketing

This study examines the gender role of a spokesperson and a type of sports in the "Match-Up Hypothesis." Two studies were conducted to test the effectiveness of sports advertisements for a gym membership: in a 2x2x2 experiment, the gender of the spokesperson, a type of sports, and the gender of the consumer are manipulated. Results indicated that females have a higher expectation of improvement when the gender of the endorser does not match the sport (Breaking the Glass Ceiling Effect). In contrast, males have a higher expectation of improvement when the gender matches the sport.

Nationalistic Media Obsession With Olympic Medal Counts: The Case Of The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Steve Dittmore, Kibaek Kim

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Faculty Publications and Presentations

Because Olympic medals are awarded to athletes representing an individual National Olympic Committee, it is natural for the media, and even the International Olympic Committee, to create a table indicating which nation has experienced the most athletic success. Problems, and even disagreements, arise when nations utilize different methods to count medals. The 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, contested in 2021, provided a unique opportunity to observe how media organizations create a narrative around medal tables. American media outlets preferred to consistently show the United States at the top of the medal standings even though China had more gold medals for much …

From Strategic Goal To Reality: The Development Of The Myrtle Beach Invitational Basketball Tournament, Mark Mitchell, Dennis Edwards, John Marcis

The Coastal Business Journal

The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, area was selected to serve as one-time hosts for two tournaments in 2017: the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament and the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Men's College Basketball Tournament, when circumstances required those events to relocate on very short notice. Following the success of these two one-time events, the region sought to become a permanent host of an annual men's college basketball tournament to be played in November or December. This manuscript examines the development process of this tournament and illustrates how tournament organizers addressed the most common elements found in such events.

Although performance on assessments of professional writing and the description of a mathematical programming model averaged less than 80% across all essays written, improved writing when students received formative feedback in 2013 suggests that teaching students to identify and articulate the development and use of …

An examination of the determinants of minor league baseball attendance in the South Atlantic League is performed through regression analysis. Potential determinants included in the regression model include demographic variables, team performance variables, and dummies for various categories of promotions. Overall, South Atlantic League baseball appears to be an inferior good, fans do not significantly respond to winning teams, fans do respond favorably to high-scoring games, and promotional events play a major role in attendance. The events that are shown to have the biggest impact at the gate are fireworks and concerts. It appears that the overall entertainment experience, not …

The Unintended Effects Of Aacsb's 2003 Accreditation Standards, John B. White, William Levernier, Morgan P. Miles Feb 2022

The Unintended Effects Of Aacsb's 2003 Accreditation Standards, John B. White, William Levernier, Morgan P. Miles

The Coastal Business Journal

The AACSB recently adopted new accreditation guidelines that are less restrictive regarding what constitutes "qualified faculty" for accreditation purposes. The new standards are less restrictive, with less emphasis on a terminal degree and more on faculty being "fully participating." However, the new standard may have a detrimental effect on the quality of collegiate business education. It may also reduce the standing and prestige of business schools within the university community. Finally, it may reduce the value of AACSB accreditation.
