Perceived Value E-Ticketing As Sports Entertainment Options, Amber A. Smith-Ditizio
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Through the advantages of online and electronic ticketing services, the sporting entertainment industry has been able to increase the production and effectiveness of their customer relation management department. While simultaneously minimizing and perfecting the current concerns of electronic ticketing such as; costs, safety measures to both consumers and companies, delivery modes, comparisons to traditional ticket services, and technological sophistication. An empirical study of business professionals in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan area revealed that age, amount of disposable income, and education were not predictive of the degree of customer satisfaction derived from the use of e-ticketing for sports events, possibly pointing …
Dynamic Pricing In Major League Baseball Tickets: Issues And Challenges, John T. Drea, Andrew Nahlik
Dynamic Pricing In Major League Baseball Tickets: Issues And Challenges, John T. Drea, Andrew Nahlik
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
A rapidly growing trend in the business of professional sports is the use of dynamic pricing as a tool for maximizing revenue generation. Dynamic pricing (DP) is defined as a system in which prices respond to supply and demand pressures in a real time (or nearly real time) manner (Sahay 2007). American Airlines is credited with the first widespread use of DP as a pricing tool to handle the mismatches in supply and demand for certain flights (McAfee & te Velde 2006). DP has spread to numerous other industries, including entertainment, hotels, manufacturing to order, and lately, to Major League …
Branding Gender In Sport: A Visual-Rhetorical Analysis Of The Branding Of Roller Derby, Tylean Coleman, Jon Littlefield
Branding Gender In Sport: A Visual-Rhetorical Analysis Of The Branding Of Roller Derby, Tylean Coleman, Jon Littlefield
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Branding a sport has a significant effect on its reception by the public, particularly for sports that are newer or for which consumer awareness is less. Hence, how a sport is positioned to potential spectators will likely play a key role in its success. Roller derby has been a part of American cultural landscape since the 1880’s and took its modern form during the Great depression. Historically, it involved women competing for points circling a flat track, and was primarily target to working class spectators. Over the last few decades, however, roller derby has experienced a resurgence in popularity due …
The Sensoryscape Of Theaters: A Case Of Two University Associated Theaters, Peggy O. Shields
The Sensoryscape Of Theaters: A Case Of Two University Associated Theaters, Peggy O. Shields
Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings
Live theater productions, must compete with other forms of entertainment offered in the experience economy (Barlow and Maul 2000). An impressive sensory experience that entertains and excites consumers is a key element that can differentiate and distinguish one experience from another (Gobe 2001). To be competitive theater productions should use their delivery facilities to provide an immersion experience in a theater’s sensoryscape.
Theater venues offer a sensory experience that contributes to the service offering and also provide an opportunity to contribute to the achievement of numerous marketing goals. By consciously developing the sensoryscape, not only will consumer enjoyment and satisfaction …

Required Donations: An Empirical Test Of Prospect Theory & Framing Of Per-Seat Contributions In Intercollegiate Athletics, Jason D. Reese, Brandon Brown, Gregg Bennett
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine how per-seat contributions are framed, and attempt to understand the effects of different price frames on consumer perceptions and behavior. In doing so, we apply prospect theory to explain how framing an outcome can change preferences and ultimately purchase behavior. The current study used an experimental design to determine which price frame most influences repurchase intentions, when considering three price tiers (e.g. low, moderate, high) determined in a pretest. Our results indicate the best way to increase purchase intentions when implementing per-seat contributions campaigns is to use the Combination price frame (i.e. …
A Process Model Of Sport Fan Detachment, L. Martin, Michael M. Goldman
A Process Model Of Sport Fan Detachment, L. Martin, Michael M. Goldman
Sport Management
Within the field of sport marketing, scholarship to date has predominantly focused on the drivers of fan loyalty and allegiance, and the motivational aspects of fan behavior, at the expense of understanding the deterioration of the relationship between the sport consumer and sport team. Previous customer-brand relationship literature was integrated to propose and test a model of sport fan detachment. A qualitative study of lapsed season ticket holders was conducted to gain a deep understanding of the fan’s individual lived experience. The findings contribute a four-part sequential process of a breakdown trigger, iterative decline, disengagement incident, and exit phase, to …

Brand Equity Perceptual Mapping: Competitive Landscapes And Consumer Segments In Brand Equity Space, Brian Parker
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
This study advanced a technique to map brand metrics and theoretically derived diagnostics that depict the relative positions of competitive brand sets and audience segments in a perceptual consumer-based brand equity space. Survey research collected brand equity ratings for two sets of competitive brands (Nike, Converse, Reebok and Toyota, Nissan, Pontiac), used to construct a pair of twodimensional maps that illustrate the brands’ position on brand equity dimensions relative to competitors and demographic-based segments. Paired brand equity indicators resulted in eight map quadrant areas that characterize a brand positioned in that space. The mapping techniques facilitate the strategic application of …

Is Dynamic Pricing Viable For Small Market Collegiate Athletics?, Steve Chen, Kenneth Henderson, Cassandra Smith, Nicholas Mason
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Sport organizations use dynamic ticket pricing (DTP) strategies to generate extra revenues. DTP is based on demand and occasions. This exploratory study reported the results of the online survey data collected from 48 mid-west college/university athletic directors and marketing managers. The participants shared responses regarding their perceptions of the use of DTP by regional and private smallmarket collegiate athletic programs. Specifically, the study examined the perceived benefits and shortcomings of DTP. Past experiences implementing the strategy are also discussed. The results concluded that the majority of respondents were receptive to DTP although they questioned whether the strategy could deliver excessive …

Investigating The Nba Servicescape: Fan Involvement, Team Loyalty, Perceptions Of Atmospheric Music And Emotional Responses, Crystal Southall, Richard Southall
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
Within the domain of entertainment and leisure services, sport is a unique experiential service-product. Further, sport consumer behavior has changed dramatically, as advances in technology have decreased barriers to and increased the scope of sport consumption. Sport consumers can now watch live, delayed, or recorded sport events when and where they choose. Therefore, sport organizations must focus on sustainability through the creation of a competitive advantage in the staging of live sport events. Given that the NBA product is consumed within an increasingly stimulating consumptive landscape (Andrews, 2006), this study sought to examine the relationship between NBA fans’ involvement, home-team …

Acquiring And Maintaining Premium Seat Customers In The “Big Four” Leagues, Peter J. Titlebaum, Ronald Dick, Kim Feldmann, Robert Davis
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
The sports industry in the United States will bring in an estimated $400 to $425 billion in 2011 (Plunkett Research, Ltd, 2011). Of the overall revenue, $10 billion is derived from premium seating. Unlike general admission and television revenue, income from premium seats is not usually shared with other teams in the league (Miller & Washington, 2010). Premium seating revenue makes a significant contribution to the overall revenue stream of sports organizations. In the 2010-2011 seasons, there were a total of 12,527 luxury suites across all the professional sports venues within the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA), …

For the Spring of 2014 UNL CoJMC ADPR capstone course, Advertising and Public Relations Campaigns, the Lincoln Saltdogs approached our Campaigns class in developing a strategic campaign for Lincoln’s only professional baseball team. Brett Beer, the Director of Marketing for the Saltdogs, along with his associates, provided us with one objective in developing a full campaign strategy. Mr. Beer wanted us to “get butts in seats.” Our team, Bullpen, conducted both secondary and primary research, developed a core media mix and strategies, and incorporated strategic creative tactics that would get more “butts in seats” in portraying Saltdog baseball games as …

This study used a case study approach to develop an understanding of how social media strategy is developed and deployed in Big Ten Conference athletic departments and to explore the issues associated with it. Based on in-depth interviews with department officials, the following six themes emerged: connecting with target audiences; varied approaches in coordination of postings; athletic communications as content gatekeepers; desire to incorporate sponsors and generate revenue; focusing on building fan loyalty through engagement; and challenges of negativity and metrics. The social media strategy in Big Ten Conference athletic departments appears to be driven by athletic communications/sports information departments …

Structural Relationship Among Loss Aversion, Emotion, And Sport Consumption: The Case Of Ncaa Men’S Basketball Tournament Bracketology, Brian H. Yim, Kevin K. Byon, Thomas A. Baker
AMTP Proceedings 2014
The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, known to fans as March Madness, is one of the most popular annual sporting events in the United States. Despite its economic impact on the sports industry, relative few studies have examined phenomena surrounding the March Madness bracket. Some (e.g., Kaplan &Garstka, 2001; McCrea &Hirt, 2009) have focused on how to make accurate predictions for the tournament. However, sports marketers need to understand why and how participants make decisions when filling out their brackets, and no studies have investigated this behavior. To fill this void, the current project was conducted to explain the …

Monetizing Social Media In The Sport Industry--Or Not?, Dallas Branch Jr., Jason Falls

One of the vexing issues for sport marketers is how one can develop marketing strategies and programs to utilize social media in order to "monetize" this effort. No one can argue the other 5 of 6 business drivers of social media marketing" (Falls, personal communications, 2013). These 5 include the following: Enhance Branding and Awareness Protect Brand Reputation Facilitate Customer Service Build Community Facilitate Research and Development However, when it comes to the sixth driver--"Drive Sales/Leads", sport organizations have found it difficult to affect their ability to "monetize" social media marketing efforts in this regard. It is this inability or …

Passion Transfer In Sports Advertising: Sports Passion And Attitude Toward Advertising, Brandon Brown, Larry Degaris
Journal of Applied Marketing Theory
In order to retain advertising clients, media companies are in search of viable strategies that can justify the high costs of advertising fees within the sports setting. In acknowledging the significance of advertising during sport programs, the current study seeks to investigate the value of sports advertising by introducing the concept of ‘passion transfer’ (i.e., the transference of high likability levels of sport programs to the sport programs’ advertisements). We examine this concept by analyzing the relationship between viewer passion towards programming and advertising effectiveness. In doing so, the study also lends support to the notion of incorporating emotional measures …
