Southeast Asia From The Linguistic Point Of View, Richard S. Pittman
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "We propose [...] to illustrate, with examples from the languages of Vietnam and the Philippines, certain aspects of descriptive linguistics with which the Western world should be better acquainted and certain phenomena of comparative linguistics with which the Vietnamese people should be better acquainted. Since the features indicated are common to many languages of Southeast Asia, the applications of the paper should extend far beyond the limits of Vietnam and the Philippines."

The Efficiency Of Bilingual Children In Understanding Analogies In The English Language, Veta Walker Mercer
The Efficiency Of Bilingual Children In Understanding Analogies In The English Language, Veta Walker Mercer
Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
It is felt that the bilingual population in the southwest is of significantly large enough proportions to warrant specialized emphasis on its education problems. These children need to become better comprehensive readers, not merely word-callers. Teachers frequently assume that if their pupils recognize the words of selection, comprehension is assured. Unfortunately, this is not true in many instances. There are many aspects of English language which might cause bilingual children some difficulty. A few of these might be the analogy, synonym, homonym, multiple meaning, antonym, and the idiomatic expression. This study is designed to reveal the extent which bilingual children …

Clause And Sentence Boundary Markers In The Dakota Language, Donald S. Stark
Clause And Sentence Boundary Markers In The Dakota Language, Donald S. Stark
Theses and Dissertations
From the introduction: "Based on [the] recorded data [of a natural conversation], rather than on suggested or controlled informant responses to out-of-context situations, a procedure will be described by which the larger grammatical sequences (i.e., sentences and clauses) of Dakota may be delimited from the larger speech continua in which they are imbedded.
"1.3 There are today two main views regarding the fundamental procedure to be followed in the linguistic analysis of a corpus of data, each with its group of adherents. One group considers that the analyst will obtain best results, save time, and produce a more accurate final …

Some Psycholinguistic Considerations In Quiché Literacy, David G. Fox
Some Psycholinguistic Considerations In Quiché Literacy, David G. Fox
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Our work among the Quiché Indians of Guatemala has consisted partly in the preparing of literacy materials and teaching reading and writing [...]. A major problem for our beginning readers is the recognition of sentences and other large grammatical groupings with the punctuation that marks the borders of such units. It is clear that punctuation marks are necessary for the reader as a partial indication of the intonation of the spoken language, since the latter is not otherwise indicated in the orthography. It is, however, notoriously hard to teach such marks of punctuation, and we have found …
