Teaching A Foreign Language In The Country: The Non-Native Speaker In The Country Where The Language Is Spoken, Georgia Lee Martin

MA TESOL Collection

This project concerns itself with the psychological realities of a non-native teaching a foreign language in the country where the language is spoken. Included are my personal reactions and experiences of eight weeks spent teaching an intensive course of Spanish to North American university students of anthropology in Silvia Cauca, Colombia. Various aspects such as advantages, disadvantages, teaching modifications because of the fact that one is a non-native speaker, personal feelings and student reactions to the fact that they have a non-native teacher are touched upon. The reactions and feelings of other teachers who have been in the same teaching …

Report On Supplementary Esl Reading Course, David B. Hopkins Jan 1973

Report On Supplementary Esl Reading Course, David B. Hopkins

MA TESOL Collection

The ESL Reading course described in this report was conducted for Latin American scholarship students during the summer of 1973 at the School for International Training. Since it was intended to be a supplement to the regular classes of these students, every effort was made to allow the course direction to develop according to the needs of the participants. Although the original thrust of the program was to focus upon reading attitudes, utilizing the reading interests of the students, a parallel focus on reading skills evolved. I believe that the program achieved some success by offering both the satisfaction of …

Learning English As A Second Language Through Exploring Prenumerical And Numerical Concepts, Maria Angeles Barrero

MA TESOL Collection

The purpose of this project is to present some lesson plans for teachers of English as a second language (ESL) to children in the first years of school to show the potential of numerical concepts to teach ESL. Hopefully reading or looking at the samples in creating units in ESL with numbers as a content matter can give teachers ideas about how to create their own lesson plans using this or different content matter. The project includes a study of the Instructional and Performance Objectives, Teaching Techniques, Visual Aids, as well as Number and Language Games, among other topics.

The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller Jan 1973

The Presuppositions Of Name-Calling In English, Robert S. Haller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

I have offered evidence that name-calling is a linguistic act which correlates the assumption of a status-relation between speaker and addressee with the use of terms marked (+abusive). To call someone a bastard, for.this reason, is not understood as the attempt to categorize him according to some term whose meaning, in the ordinary sense, is a list of lexical features. Rather it is the attempt to categorize him as without status in relation to the speaker himself, in defiance of his expectations, and because he has himself deserved it by himself invoking such a right over the speaker. This understanding …

Tree And String Analysis Of A Copala Trique Sentence, Bruce E. Hollenbach, David D. Thomas

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "This paper is simply a presentation of two analyses of the same Copala Trique sentence. The first analysis is done by David Thomas and represents a string analysis, with a distinction between deep structure and surface structure. The second analysis is done by Bruce Hollenbach and represents a tree analysis done from the point of view of generative semantics. We hope that this presentation may be useful to those who might be interested in comparing and contrasting these two analytical techniques."

The five semantic categories of paragraphs are Narrative, Procedural, Explanatory, Hortatory, and Dialogue. Form categories on the paragraph level, as on the sentence level, are simple, antithetical, coordinate, and parallel.

"The five semantic categories contrast structurally in (1) the kinds of tagmemes which compose the nucleus of each paragraph type, (2) the kinds of focus and aspect affixes on the verbs in the nucleus, particularly in Narrative versus Procedural paragraphs, (3) the kinds of mode affixes on the verbs, and the kinds of personal pronouns in the …
