Second Chance Language Learning: A Study Of What The Slow Language Learner's Problems Are, Why They Exist, And How To Give The Slow Language Learner Help On A Remedial Basis., Pamela S. Plimpton, Helen Kalaya

MA TESOL Collection

In the course of our paper , we will discuss theories of why the problem of the slow language learner exists, what the problem was for our specific situation and how we personally dealt with the problem(s). Realizing that other teachers will not be facing the same physical situation we did, (that of teaching ESL to Greek students at a private Greek high school in Thessaloniki, Greece) we will discuss alternatives concerning physical facilities needed for remedial help. Lastly, we offer an annotated listing of resources dealing with these students; and suggestions for the practical application of materials and methods …

Evidence For Raising In Koine Greek, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 1975

Evidence For Raising In Koine Greek, Stephen A. Marlett

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Research in generative grammar has uncovered two types of rules. Some have been found to operate in numerous totally unrelated languages and so they have been called universal rules. Others are limited to individual languages or language families and supply the more superficial aspects of word and sentence form of that particular language. These are called language-specific rules.

"In Section 2 of this paper I will illustrate how this theory can be helpful in explaining English sentences. Having done that, I will then argue the same for Koine Greek."

Space Case: Some Principles And Their Implications Concerning Linear Order In Natural Language, Lon Diehl

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "I hope that [...] the reader will be able to follow and will find profit in this attempt to penetrate through some deep regularities of ordering in linguistic representations (deep and shallow trees and strings) to the cognitive principles which seem to underlie them."

Nasalization In Sharanahua, Eugene E. Loos Jan 1975

Nasalization In Sharanahua, Eugene E. Loos

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "The nasalization of vowels in Sharanahua can be explained on the basis of consonants present in the underlying form of the morphemes, but the underlying consonants are not always nasal consonants. The explanation proposed here for oral consonants producing nasal vowels exploits the notion of sequential constraint rules ordered among or after other phonological rules."

A Comparison Of Mission Programs Used In The Three Language Training Missions Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Rawn Arthur Wallgren

Theses and Dissertations

Since the instigation of the first language training mission in December, 1961, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been vitally interested in the language instruction of its missionaries. As the number of missionaries called to foreign missions increased, the need for more facilities and instruction grew rapidly. During the week of January 18, 1969, Elder Spencer W. Kimball, Chairman of the Church Missionary Committee, announced expansion of the language training mission program that would go into effect on February 8 of that same year. Languages would not only be taught at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, but …

Subordinating And Coordinating Particles In Lakhota, Wolfgang Corduan Dec 1974

Subordinating And Coordinating Particles In Lakhota, Wolfgang Corduan

Theses and Dissertations

In her Dakota Texts Ella Deloria appears to be using cha and chanke interchangeably. The goal of this paper is to show that the difference lies in the realm of subordination. For this purpose other languages have been examined to detect how subordination is marked in them. Both German and English are shown to mark subordinate clauses overtly, but Lakhota markers are not so apparent. Subordination is formally defined in a Generative Semantic framework and pertinent works on Lakhota grammar are reviewed. The solution implied by Boas and Deloria that cha is a subordinator is accepted and proven to be …

A Sociolinguistic Study Of Language Usage In The Territory Of Guam, George Alfred Riley Jul 1974

A Sociolinguistic Study Of Language Usage In The Territory Of Guam, George Alfred Riley

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This is the report of a study of the language usage of residents of the Territory of Guam who are bilingual in Chamorro and English. It concerns the configuration of language dominance that is characteristic of this group, assessing the degree of bilingualism and the distribution of bilingualism in formal and informal societal domains. The relationship among ethnocentrism, language loyalty, and actual language usage is explored. The study also describes the attitudes of members of the speech community to language maintenance and shift in general, and towards the appropriateness of the two languages in various situations and domains.

Serial Verbs In Surinam Creoles, George L. Huttar

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

From the introduction: "Williams (1971) has pointed out some specific resemblances between Krio and the Kwa languages of West Africa with regard to [the above] constructions. The obvious conclusion that one is tempted to draw is an answer to a question about origins, namely, Krio must have aquired this set of syntactic features from the influence of Kwa languages. Whether that is the correct evaluation of the resemblance between Krio and Kwa, however, must be determined by the answers to some other questions, such as the following:

  • How widespread are identical or similar constructions in other [pidgins and creoles]?
  • How …
