Basic Configurations Of Pragmatic Structuring, Robert A. Dooley
Basic Configurations Of Pragmatic Structuring, Robert A. Dooley
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "In this paper, I will be making a small exploration into the question: What variety is present in human languages in regard to a basic, unmarked pragmatic configuration? After presenting some preliminary notions (Sect. 2) and the evidence for Topic-Comment in Mbyá Guaraní, Comment-Topic in Hixkaryana, and Focus-Presupposition in Xavante (Sect. 3-5), I will discuss the problem of V-only languages (Sect. 6), and then some considerations regarding a universal framework for the study of pragmatic configurations (Sect.7)."

The Syllable Structure Of Seri, Stephen A. Marlett
The Syllable Structure Of Seri, Stephen A. Marlett
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "[M]y main objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of Seri syllable structure and facts which are relevant to it. In some cases I argue that certain data support a particular structure over another, but in some cases alternative treatments may also be compatible with the facts. These facts are relevant to a number of issues, including the sonority hierarchy, the internal structure of syllables (especially the nucleus), the representation of long vowels, the representation of round consonants, the CV tier, the relationship of stress to syllabification, and the distinction between the syllable structure of inflected words …
A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke
A Comparison Of Norm-Referenced, Traditional, And Computer-Assisted Language Assessments, Michel P. Helmke
Masters Theses
Current literature in the field of communication disorders suggests that traditional norm-referenced tests may yield erroneous or misleading information regarding a child's level of language acquisition. Additional research suggests that the most valid and reliable technique for determining a client's level of linguistic expertise is language sampling and analysis. Language sampling and analysis has traditionally been rejected as a means of evaluation, especially for the school-age child, due to the length of time necessary to complete such analyses. In recent years, language sampling and analysis techniques have been redesigned as computer software application programs. Computer software application programs may significantly …

Making The Most Of Volunteer Help: A Handbook For Parents And Teachers, Janet Lynn Bond
Graduate Theses
This project is concerned with the importance of parental involvement in children learning to read. Research shows children who view reading as an important and valuable process develop a more positive attitude toward learning to read. Children involved in reading activities at home learn to read earlier and have improved comprehension over children who have no experiences reading in the home. Parent involvement can take place in the home or at school as classroom volunteers. This project contains a volunteer handbook for parents and teachers. Included are characteristics of a volunteer, tips for teachers, suggested activities for the classroom and …

Some Major Aspects Of The Focus System In Isnag, Rodolfo Rosario Barlaan
Some Major Aspects Of The Focus System In Isnag, Rodolfo Rosario Barlaan
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study attempts to specify how the syntactic form signals the semantic and pragmatic aspects of the focus system in the Isnag language. It specifies the correlation between the semantics and grammar of focus by proposing a ranking of the relevant semantic/participant roles called the Preferential Selection Hierarchy. This hierarchy constrains the positions the NP's can take in the clause and the co-occurrence of the NP's (i.e., which NP's may occur together in a clause). With regard to the correlation between the pragmatics and the grammar of focus, this study discusses, (a) the COMMENT-TOPIC structure, which is the overarching force …
The Structure Of Thai Narrative Discourse, Somsonge Burusphat
The Structure Of Thai Narrative Discourse, Somsonge Burusphat
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study presents the interrelated concerns of Thai narrative discourse which include macrostructure, texture, constituent structure, and cultural information. The macrostructure is the global meaning of a discourse which is derived via the basic principles of macro-processing. A specific Thai narrative text is analyzed to illustrate how to derive a macrostructure via these principles and how the derived macrostructure can be considered to be a control on the content and balance of the story. The profile of narrative discourse is a kind of texture which is a manifestation of the macrostructure. The profile is studied in relation to plot as …

A Comparative Study Of Three Language Sampling Methods Using Developmental Sentence Scoring, Cheryl Diane Dong
A Comparative Study Of Three Language Sampling Methods Using Developmental Sentence Scoring, Cheryl Diane Dong
Dissertations and Theses
The present study sought to determine the effect different stimulus material has on the language elicited from children. Its purpose was to determine whether a significant difference existed among language samples elicited three different ways when analyzed using DSS. Eighteen children between the ages of 3.6 and 5.6 years were chosen to participate in the study. All of the children had normal bearing. normal receptive vocabulary skills and no demonstrated or suspected physical or social delays. Three language samples. each elicited by either toys. pictures. or stories. were obtained from each child. For each sample. a corpus of 50 utterances …
The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
The Effects Of Two Management Techniques On The Generalization Of A Syntax Structure, Karin Jeanne Goodling
Dissertations and Theses
The effectiveness of any language training program is determined by generalization of the clinically trained behaviors to spontaneous speech. Traditional language programs which employ operant procedures to establish the behavior in the clinic and reinforcement from family, teachers and peers in a variety of settings to obtain generalization, have been successful in establishing the use of grammatical rules in the clinic setting, but reportedly have failed to promote generalization. Recent literature in the areas of semantics and pragmatics has produced a trend toward teaching language in natural contexts. The purpose of this study was to investigate: 1) whether a group …
Sex-Based Differences In English Argumentative Text: A Tagmemic Sociolinguistic Perspective, Susan Lynn Peterson
Sex-Based Differences In English Argumentative Text: A Tagmemic Sociolinguistic Perspective, Susan Lynn Peterson
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This work applies insights from sociolinguistics, text-linguistics, social psychology, women's studies, informal logic, and tagmemic theory to the task of investigating sex-based textual differences in argumentative text. More specifically, it (1) lays out a means (both theoretical and methodological) of analyzing argumentative text; (2) analyzes the differences between argumentative texts produced by university freshman women and those produced by their male counterparts; (3) compares the findings of this analysis to previous studies in sex-based differences in English; (4) presents a sketch of these texts' social production context with an emphasis on sex-based social patterns in communication style and in moral …
On The Interaction Of Linguistic Texts And Human Knowledge, Kerry Stewart Robichaux
On The Interaction Of Linguistic Texts And Human Knowledge, Kerry Stewart Robichaux
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study examines some aspects of the interaction of linguistic texts and human knowledge. The quest for greater context in linguistics suggests the focus of this study, viz., the effect of a text on the knowledge of its receiver. A practical problem arises in a study of this sort, however, viz., how should knowledge be represented so that the effects a text has on it can be identified and analyzed? One of the notions employed in the field of artificial intelligence, i.e., the notion of frames, is applied to the problem. In essence, then, this study shows the possible relationships …
Computer Assisted Dialect Adaptation: The Tucanoan Experiment, Robert Bruce Reed
Computer Assisted Dialect Adaptation: The Tucanoan Experiment, Robert Bruce Reed
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation provides the theoretical basis for a computer program that adapts textual material from one language of the Tucanoan family to another. Tucanoan languages are spoken by small groups living in southeastern Colombia, northwestern Brazil, northern Peru, and northern Ecuador. This work represents the first attempt to apply principles of machine translation and computational linguistics to indigenous languages of Colombia. It discusses aspects of translation theory relevant to machine translation. Some features of the Tucanoan languages relevant to the adaptation process are discussed in depth, including differences in suffix systems marking case, noun classifiers, and the evidential systems of …
Proto-Quichean Kinship, David Frederick Oltrogge
Proto-Quichean Kinship, David Frederick Oltrogge
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
The Quichean languages are comprised of a family of related languages of the Mayan stock, spoken principally in the highlands of Guatemala in Central America. Some of the kinship terminologies currently in use by the speakers of these languages manifest a Hawaiian classification, while what seem to be vestiges of an Omaha system are also scattered throughout the area. In Tzeltal and Tzotzil, two languages of the Cholan family (also Mayan) spoken in Mexico, Omaha systems are currently in use. The question therefore arises as to what sort of system was present in Proto-Quichean (PQ). On the basis of phonological …

Ternarity And Obligatory Branching In Pirahã, Daniel L. Everett
Ternarity And Obligatory Branching In Pirahã, Daniel L. Everett
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "In this paper it is argued that the analysis of stress placement in Pirahã offers important new evidence on the proper characterization of prosodic organization as well as the notational devices necessary to express this organization. Specifically, I will show that Pirahã stress placement is intractable to either a grid account (Prince 1983) or a binary branching analysis but that an insightful perspective on a variety of stress related phenomena is available if we assume that Pirahã has ternary, obligatory branching feet. Evidence is presented from the assignment of stress in morphologically simple words, lexical compounds, words …
Grammatical Relations In Eskimo: A Response To Kalamár, Richard J. Nivens
Grammatical Relations In Eskimo: A Response To Kalamár, Richard J. Nivens
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Kalmár (1979) attempts to disprove what he sees as two basic assumptions behind the relational grammar analysis of Eskimo antipassives. His arguments, however, have at least two flaws: a misunderstanding of relational grammar, and a less-than-comprehensive view of the Eskimo data."
The Languages Of The Zambales Mountains: A Philippine Lexicostatistic Study, John S. Wimbish
The Languages Of The Zambales Mountains: A Philippine Lexicostatistic Study, John S. Wimbish
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "A lexicostatistic survey was conducted in early 1985 as part of a comprehensive study of the languages spoken in the Zambales Mountains of the Philippines. The survey involved the collection and analysis of some forty word lists, resulting in the definition of six distinct languages in an area whose linguistic situation had previously been relatively unknown. This paper presents these survey findings in the form of a language tree, and introduces a general-use computer program which greatly enhanced the accuracy and speed of the lexicostatistic analysis."
