Not only does this project show how to integrate instruction with ever advancing technology, it also demonstrates how to integrate interactive class work with the diverse and relevant learning styles of each learner in the classroom. This project will show how easy it is to use this technology in conjunction with thematic units or projects-whatever the level of the ESL student. Enclosed are examples of instructional materials, created for the ESL High Beginner and examples of how they relate to the paper …

Rising Off The Plateau In Learning Arabic, Daniel Scott Linquist Jan 2000

Rising Off The Plateau In Learning Arabic, Daniel Scott Linquist

MA TESOL Collection

Experiencing plateaus in second language learning is a common experience, especially for language student studying Arabic or one of the other languages considered more difficult. Some of the causes for the plateau experience in Arabic are its complex grammar, its vast amount of vocabulary, and the different roles of Modern Standard Arabic and the spoken dialects of Arabic.

Rising off the Plateau in Studying Arabic is a thesis project, which analyzes this second language learner’s attempt to make significant progress in studying Modern Standard Arabic. The project was based on a self-directed, semi-intensive Arabic language program, which prioritized the reading …

Unleashing The Writer Within: A Workshop Based Writing Course Designed To Release Student Fears, Cultivate Creativity And Develop Editing Skills, Kimberly Sue Connelly

MA TESOL Collection

Establishing a community of learners in a language classroom produces a fertile environment in which to teach any and all language skills. Building community was the focus of the Writing Workshop that I designed and taught to large classes of high beginner to advanced immigrants, refugees, and international students in a college level ESL program. The activities I developed for the first weeks connect students to each other through creativity, music and art, authorize students to set their own goals, encourage them to examine their writing anxieties, and allow them to explore their identities as writers. By breaking down fears …

African Film: A Dynamic Medium For A High School French Class Cultural Curriculum, Denise Elizabeth Dunn Barstow-Girel

MA TESOL Collection

Culture can be an integral part of the French foreign language class when students learn French language and Francophone culture through a content-based approach using the medium of African films. Founded on the pedagogical value of a thematic study of issues aimed at raising linguistic, cultural, and global awareness in adolescent, fourth or fifth year high school French students, I developed this cultural curriculum focused on Francophone African culture. While learning the French language, students will gain knowledge of West African cultures including historical aspects, and the role of the French language in this region.

Reduplication In Southern Paiute And Correspondence Theory, Naomi Gurevich Jan 2000

Reduplication In Southern Paiute And Correspondence Theory, Naomi Gurevich

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In Southern Paiute, word initial w is realized as a labialized velar nasal intervocalically if it finds itself in such an environment upon morphological concatenation. McCarthy and Prince (1995) argue that a serial analysis of this alternation vis-à-vis reduplication leads to an ordering paradox, but an Optimality Theoretic analysis of the interaction between reduplication and the morphophonemic alternation in the language is able to account for the data. This analysis of Southern Paiute data, along with a handful of other examples in their work, is put forth by McCarthy and Prince as strong evidence in support of Correspondence Theory. I …

Grice's Implicature And Toulmin's Warrants: Their Arresting Similarities And The Resulting Implications For The Understanding Of Meaning In Communication, Caroline Paige Krejci Jan 2000

Grice's Implicature And Toulmin's Warrants: Their Arresting Similarities And The Resulting Implications For The Understanding Of Meaning In Communication, Caroline Paige Krejci

Theses Digitization Project

Paul Grice's conversational implicature is a widely studied and commonly accepted theory in the field of linguistics, and Stephen Toulmin's model of argument is perhaps even more widely studied and accepted in the field of argument. I was struck by the great similarities between the two theories, particularly the leap of logic both are dependent upon, and surprised by the fact that it didn't seem that anyone had explored the similarities. In this thesis, I explore the similarities of the processes, of Grices's implicature and Toulmin's model of argument, and how looking at the two together increases the understanding of …

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul Jan 2000

Malagasy Clause Structure, Ileana M. Paul

French Studies Publications

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …

From Evidence To Belief: Developmental Precursors For False Belief Ascriptions, Jill De Villiers, Angelika Kratzer, Tom Roeper Jan 2000

From Evidence To Belief: Developmental Precursors For False Belief Ascriptions, Jill De Villiers, Angelika Kratzer, Tom Roeper

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

Recently, a fruitful line of inquiry has linked children’s acquisition of the language of the mind to their developing understanding of other minds. In particular, a cascade of linguistic effects regarding sentences embedded under mental verbs has been shown to occur around the age of four years for the average child, roughly the age when children start passing standard false belief tests. This set of linguistic effects is summarized briefly below. In the proposed study, we will turn our attention to possible precursors for the ability to ascribe a false belief to another person. These precursors include knowledge about how …

Persuasion In Thesis Writing, Faridah Noor Mohd. Noor Jan 2000

Persuasion In Thesis Writing, Faridah Noor Mohd. Noor

Student Works (2000-2009)

This study is an attempt to suggest that persuasion is employed in thesis writing . Based on the Social Constructionist Approach , the present study proposes that persuasion in thesis writing is implicit. This is in line with the demands of the academic community that expects scientific language to be objective. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted in the study. The major study is a qualitative analysis based on a corpus made up of fourteen (14) Master's theses that were randomly selected from the Arts and Science fields. Two quantitative analyses were also conducted on the corpus. The first …

Genre In Social Process : The Executive Secretary In Business Environment, Suseela Nair

Student Works (2000-2009)

This is a study on genre as a social process in relation to the role of the executive secretary in the business environment. The study examines the way in which linguistics, drawn into the realm of the social sciences, serves as a 'tool' for the analysis of the role of the executive secretary in a business organization. The study provides evidence on how language, emerging from the context and linguistic symbols, shapes persons and behaviour in the work environment of the executive secretary. The focus is on talk interactions of the executive secretary in naturally occurring circumstances. The main talk …

The Effect Of The Auap Study Abroad Experience On The Students' Cultural Perceptions, K. James Hartshorn

Faculty Publications

As the Asia University America Program (AUAP) commences its second decade, those who have closely observed this unique study abroad experience are aware of a variety of ways the students seem to benefit from their participation. Some of these benefits are academic and can be seen in the development and improvement of specific language skills, gains in standardized test scores and earned university credit applied toward graduation. However, there seem to be a variety of other valuable benefits that may be a little more difficult to measure. such benefits could include the enlargement of the students' international perspective as world …
