Dialogue Et Discours Attributif Dans Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique De Marguerite Duras, Rabia Maaroufi

Dirassat

This article is a study of attributive discourse through the work of Marguerite Duras. The author proposes an analysis based on the variety of expressive verbs and the dominance of the neutral verb in the novel. The article also explores the notion of non-communication and conversation. Drawing up a complete picture of a colonial life perceived as a positive vision of French colonialism, dialogue and discourse symbolize the vanity of the characters' efforts to get out of their condition.

Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany Jun 2021

Aménagement Sociolinguistique De L'Espace Urbain Au Maroc, Amina Saoussany

Dirassat

The sociolinguistic configuration of Morocco reveals that Morocco is a multi-lingual country. Many languages coexist in it. They are of unequal importance, though, the language-field prevailing in Morocco is characterized by the prevalence of an array of languages and dialects (cf Abbassi, 1977; Boukous, 1979; Gravel, 1979; Bentahila, 1983; Ennaji, 1991...). This field remains highly distinct from the multi-racial mosaic finding form in some countries like(...) Cameroon or Tanzania (El Gherbi 1993:13). It produces an area where the confrontation of historical and language factors results into the coexistence of certain dialects. It also contributes to the evolution of some languages …

نحو نحو وظيفي للخطاب لسيمون ديك, ربيعة العربي

Dirassat

The present article seeks to shed light on a fundamental issue in contemporarydiscourse, namely, the issue of functionalgrammar. It argues that Speech Interaction Model, Dynamic Discourse Models, Career Perspectives of Discourse, Comprehensive Rhetoric Decisions: Space, Event, Speech Type Selection, Speech Style Selection, Speech World Mode, Speech Achievement... are components that should be invoked in order to contribute to this grammatical model. This integration mainly serves to avoid the disintegration of speech in the form of words and sentences as it may not reflect natural language. The latter is replete with evidence showing that speech is a social and interactive event …

Happy , Sad Or Pizza : A Review Of Emoji Effects On Reading Times And Their Relation To Mood, Fetheya Alattar

University Honors Theses

With recent advancements in technology, emoji are continuously changing the way that people communicate and process language. Their use continues to evolve as a mechanism to counter the loss of the rich nonverbal cues of face-to-face communication. Subsequently, the need for research examining how emoji are processed and how they affect language and communication has become more important. This research specifically examines the scholarship on emoji effects on sentence reading times (RT) and how this relates to mood. Results on the effects of emoji on sentence RT are mixed. In some instances, emoji slowed RT and in others, they sped …

Spanish-Origin Verbal And Grammatical Borrowing In Paraguayan Guaraní, Josefina Bittar Prieto Jun 2021

Spanish-Origin Verbal And Grammatical Borrowing In Paraguayan Guaraní, Josefina Bittar Prieto

Linguistics ETDs

Previous work on language change in contact situations has treated lexical borrowing and grammatical borrowing as discrete phenomena (Appel and Muysken 1987, Thomason 2001, Campbell 2013). Claims that lexical borrowing needs to occur before grammatical borrowing (e.g. Thomason and Kaufmann 1988) or that grammar can be borrowed without any lexicon (e.g. Aikhenvald 2002) are often mentioned in the literature. This dissertation explores the interplay between grammatical constructions (in the sense of Goldberg 2006) and lexical elements in intense contact situations. More specifically, it addresses the following research question: Are grammatical constructions borrowed independently from the elements contained in said constructions? …

Counterstories Of Black High School Students And Graduates Of Nyc Independent Schools: A Narrative Case Study, Kahdeidra M. Martin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Public youth resistance movements in 2019 and 2020 exposed the entrenchment of racism, sexism, heteronormativity, and classism across New York City independent schools (NYCIS). In order to support the imminent need for schools to provide effective diversity, inclusion, and equity supports that address broad issues of school climate, relationships, and pedagogy, there is a need to better understand the specific, hyperlocal experiences of Black/African Descendant (BAD) students, who occupy several unique, unexplored spaces in educational research. The following four research questions helped to conceptualize the experiences that support and hinder the academic success and long term well-being of BAD students …

Fighting Words: Slurs, Semantics, And The Law, Richard Stillman Jun 2021

Fighting Words: Slurs, Semantics, And The Law, Richard Stillman

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Oppressive slurs like the n-word are fighting words par excellence. Their power to incite conflict and inflict emotional injury is unmatched by that of other, more commonplace insults. But what is it that makes oppressive slurs such potent verbal weapons? A commonplace view among both philosophers and legal theorists is that slurs make such potent insults because their uses convey extremely offensive, bigoted attitudes. This dissertation argues that this view is mistaken, and that its falsity has important implications for hate speech jurisprudence. I argue that, to grasp what makes slurs such potent verbal weapons, we ought conceive …

Predicting Stock Price Movements Using Sentiment And Subjectivity Analyses, Andrew Kirby Jun 2021

Predicting Stock Price Movements Using Sentiment And Subjectivity Analyses, Andrew Kirby

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In a quick search online, one can find many tools which use information from news headlines to make predictions concerning the trajectory of a given stock. But what if we went further, looking instead into the text of the article, to extract this and other information? Here, the goal is to extract the sentence in which a stock ticker symbol is mentioned from a news article, then determine sentiment and subjectivity values from that sentence, and finally make a prediction on whether or not the value of that stock will go up or not in a 24-hour timespan. Bloomberg News …

Predictors Of Lexical Accessibility Of Common And Proper Nouns In Older Age: Evidence From The Tip-Of-The-Tongue State, Amy Victoria Vogel-Eyny Jun 2021

Predictors Of Lexical Accessibility Of Common And Proper Nouns In Older Age: Evidence From The Tip-Of-The-Tongue State, Amy Victoria Vogel-Eyny

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

One of the notable language difficulties experienced by healthy older adults is word retrieval failure, specifically the tip-of-the-tongue state (TOT). A TOT occurs when one has a strong sense of knowing the word, such that the semantic content is accessed, but the entirety of the word’s phonology is temporarily inaccessible. Such retrieval difficulty is attributable, at least in part, to characteristics of the target word. Psycholinguistic features may uniquely influence the semantic and/or phonological stages of word production. An additional factor known to influence TOT-likelihood is noun type: proper nouns elicit TOTs more often than do common nouns. The discrepancy …

Discourse Strategies In Selected African Suicide Notes, Oluwole Sanni

Theses and Dissertations

The present study aims to investigate the discourse strategies, positioning moves, and sociological variables that characterized the selected African suicide notes. Twenty suicide notes from different African countries constituted the data for the study. The data was deductively analysed using Davis & Harre (1999) positioning theory aside being inductively analysed. The results concluded that the discourse and structural patterns of metaphor, intertextuality, pronouns, presupposition, repetition, if conditionals, and intensifiers were deployed by the African suicide completers to demonstrate agency or/and victimhood. Also, first-order, second-order, third-order, expert and moral positioning were used in the suicide notes for self and other portrayer …

Using Film As A Multimodal Text In The Language Classroom, Kate Marie Steckmest May 2021

Using Film As A Multimodal Text In The Language Classroom, Kate Marie Steckmest

MA TESOL Collection

Film is a powerful medium for language acquisition; Not only does viewing films allow learners to experience language used in various real-life contexts, but the medium of film itself is a form of communication. Through the active viewing of films, students can explore how people with diverse backgrounds, accents, and cultures communicate using multiple modes such as gestures, images, and sounds. When learners are familiar with the techniques used by filmmakers to convey meaning, they can use the medium of film themselves to tell their stories and share their perspectives through filmmaking projects. Such projects can be collaborative and engaging …

Contrasting Spaces In Plautdietsch: Language Variation And Change, Roslyn Burns May 2021

Contrasting Spaces In Plautdietsch: Language Variation And Change, Roslyn Burns

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

In this article, I explore linguistic variation in Plautdietsch through the lens of social variation and the resulting redistribution of linguistic forms across the community. Language change requires variation in a population and a social pathway for the variation to be distributed (or redistributed) across a community. This article explores two systems of variation in the Plautdietsch language as it is used across North America: the so-called traditional dialect system (based on descriptions from Thiessen 1977, Epp 1993, and Rempel 1995, among others), and the vowel system (based on Nieuweboer 1998, Burns 2016a,b, among others). I propose that linguistic diversification …

They all declared to have participated in the “St Andrew’s School of Evangelization.” They also mentioned having experienced an "encounter with God." Their narratives were similar to conversion accounts reported by practitioners of other religious traditions. The interviewees describe faith as a personal choice, and emphasize the need for religious study and the value of religious knowledge. To what extent these values …

Contemporary Brazilian Catholicism And Healing Practices: Notes On Environmentalism And Medicalization, Juliano F. Almeida May 2021

Contemporary Brazilian Catholicism And Healing Practices: Notes On Environmentalism And Medicalization, Juliano F. Almeida

Journal of Global Catholicism

Anthropological studies on Brazilian Catholicism traditionally focused on popular variants of this religious practice and their relationship with the official Catholicism. Encouraged by recent anthropological perspectives, which highlight the relevance of devoting researches not only on the margins, but also on the center of social practices, this paper analyzes contemporary practices of Brazilian Catholic friars and priests on health promotion. The analysis of their publications (books that include practices and tips on health and that became best sellers etc.), as well as interviews, allows us to perceive a process of environmentalization on the contemporary Brazilian Catholicism. This process seems to …

Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol May 2021

Strong Church, Weak Catholicism: Transformations In Brazilian Catholicism, Carlos Alberto Steil, Rodrigo Toniol

Journal of Global Catholicism

In this paper we explore data on Catholicism from the 2010 census in Brazil, as well as other data from the Center for Religious Statistics and Social Investigation. Using these statistics, we question those arguments that explain the reduction in the number of Catholics in Brazilian society as a problem in the institution’s adaptation in response to the challenges of evangelization, or as a lack of ministerial vocations to meet the religious demands of the people. Pursuing an alternative argument, we consider the weakening of the relationship between the Catholic institution and traditional popular Catholicism to be a fundamental aspect …

"Lexicography" And Dictionary Compilation, Sokhib Salimovich Sharipov

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. This article examines lexicography - a separate science that includes theoretical lexicography with its own theory, and since there is a theory, then there is practice, that is, practical lexicography. Lexicographic research combines both theoretical and practical aspects. The creation of innovative models of theoretical linguistic conclusions for new practical lexicographic products is the main task of lexicographic research. As a mirror reflecting the development of civilizations, the state and level of the people, relations in society, the development of scientifically progressive or orthodox thought, the dictionary covers a variety of fields of science and technology: from interpretation and …

The Allocation Of Particles In Translation Dictionaries And Ways To Express Them In Translation, Gulrukh Shavkatovna Kakhkhorova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Introduction. In the languages of the peoples of the world, particles with their own logical-grammatical, semantic-stylistic features and functions, historical development and pragmatic features have an independent place as one of the auxiliary words. Although they do not have a separate lexical meaning, they are among the categories that provide a linguistic and speech relationship in terms of their ability to connect equally to each other by adding different meanings to words and sentences at the syntactic levels. The comparative study of particles within different systematic languages plays an important role in understanding and expressing objective reality through language tools. …
