Physiological Impacts Of Plastic Ingestion On Sea Turtles, Heather Seaman
Physiological Impacts Of Plastic Ingestion On Sea Turtles, Heather Seaman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the years, plastic production has increased to astonishing numbers and is predicted to continue. Over time, environmental plastic will degrade into smaller pieces, which sea turtles can mistake for prey. Chemicals associated with plastics have been identified in tissues of sea turtles, and some are suspected to be endocrine disruptors. Sea turtles are known to ingest plastics, but more information is needed to illuminate the potential physiological impacts plastic chemicals may have on sea turtles. This study compared plastic ingestion and toxicant levels across species and ontogenically, as different species and life stages inhabit different areas which will influence …

Indonesian Journal of Medical Chemistry and Bioinformatics
Background: The vaginal microbiota plays a critical role in maintaining female reproductive health. Beneficial bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus species, contribute to vaginal homeostasis, whereas dysbiosis-associated bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis and Prevotella bivia have been linked to bacterial vaginosis and reproductive tract disorders. Publicly available nucleotide databases and bioinformatic tools provide accessible resources for studying microbial species associated with vaginal health. Objective: This study aimed to perform a simple in silico analysis of representative vaginal microbiota using publicly available 16S rRNA gene sequences retrieved from the NCBI database and analyzed using BLAST and phylogenetic approaches. Methods: Representative 16S rRNA gene sequences …

Using Fecal Diagnostic Tests To Assess The Prevalence Of Fasciola Hepatica In The United States Sheep Population, Brooke A. Delcambre
LSU Master's Theses
Fasciola hepatica, the common liver fluke, is endemic in the Pacific Northwest and Gulf Coast of the United States. To provide updated information on F. hepatica prevalence, as part of the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System Sheep 2024 study, sheep operations in the top 30 sheep-producing states were identified, and producers were invited to participate. For each operation, feces were collected from at least eight sheep and pooled to form a single composite sample. Two methods were used to identify sheep infected with F. hepatica: fecal sedimentation and indirect sandwich ELISA. At the national level, across 318 operations, 7.1 …

[Objective] To develop a shrimp freshness indicator film with good amine responsiveness and stability for the rapid and non-destructive detection of shrimp quality changes. [Methods] Using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and starch as film-forming substrates, indicator films were prepared with grape seed proanthocyanidins, curcumin, and their mixtures as indicators. The responses of the three indicator films to aqueous solution pH and trimethylamine were compared. The detection sensitivity and storage stability of the mixed indicator film were further evaluated. The indicator film was then applied to monitor the freshness of Litopenaeus vannamei, and the correlation and kinetics between total volatile basic nitrogen …
