Citrus is one of the most important and widely cultivated fruit crops globally. However, its productivity is increasingly threatened by various diseases, with bacterial infections being particularly the most destructive. Among these, citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac), poses a significant challenge, requiring effective management strategies. Traditional approaches have shown limited success, but nanotechnology has emerged as a promising alternative for disease control. In this study, Xanthomonas spp. was isolated from two locations: Koont Farm and the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) citrus orchards in Islamabad, Pakistan. The isolates were identified through morpho-biochemical methods. Moreover, three Bacillus …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the common liver cancer, exhibits higher incidence in males. Here, we report that mice lacking bile acid (BA) regulators, Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR also termed NR1H4) and Small Heterodimer Partner (SHP also termed NR0B2), recapitulate the sex difference in liver cancer risk. Since few therapeutic options are available, we focused on understanding the intrinsic protection afforded to female livers. Transcriptomic analysis in control and NR1H4 and NR0B2 double knockout livers identified female-specific changes in metabolism, including amino acids, lipids, and steroids. To assess translational relevance, we examined if transcriptomic signatures obtained from this murine HCC model correlate …

Recent evidence highlights the significance of a new type of tumour suppressors, which are not frequently mutated but inhibited by metabolic cues in cancers. Here, we identify BATF2 as a tumour suppressor whose expression is epigenetically silenced by glutamine in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas (HNSCC). BATF2 correlates with type-I interferon and Th1 signatures in human HNSCC, with correlation coefficients even stronger than those of the positive control, STING. The phosphorylation of BATF2 at serine 227 promotes the oligomerization of STING. BATF2 deficiency or high glutamine levels result in higher oxygen consumption rates and metabolic profiles unfavorable for …

Fresh produce is highly perishable, necessitating various postharvest treatments to minimize quality loss, extend shelf-life, and facilitate international trade. This study investigated the potential of a single low-dose gamma irradiation treatment as an alternative to commercially used chemical treatments for protecting ‘Granny Smith’ apples against insect pests and postharvest disorders. ‘Granny Smith’ apples harvested in 2019 and 2020 were treated with gamma irradiation at doses of 240 or 860 Gray (Gy) or with commercial chemical applications of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), diphenylamine (DPA), or methyl bromide (MeBr). The impact on fruit quality, physiology, and the development of postharvest disorders was evaluated after …

Physics and Engineering Science
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) flow measurements are common practice in laboratory settings in a wide variety of fields involving fluid dynamics, including biology, physics, engineering, and medicine. Dynamic fluid pressure is a notoriously difficult property to measure non-intrusively, yet its variation is a driving flow force and critical to model correctly. Techniques have been developed to estimate the pressure from velocity and velocity gradient measurements. Here, we highlight a novel application of boundary conditions when applying such pressure estimation techniques based on two-dimensional PIV data; the novel method is especially relevant to problems with complex boundary conditions. As such, it …

Parameter Identification Of A Pi Controller For A Wind Energy Conversion System Based On Dfig, Mariam Hesham, Dina S. M. Osheba, Mahmoud M. Khater
Mansoura Engineering Journal
In this work, three methods are proposed to identify parameters of PI controllers used for wind energy conversion systems based on DFIG. Mathematical model of generator and grid side system is depicted. Three tuning methods; bode-plot, pole-placement, and MATLAB tuner are used for grid side and rotor side converter controllers’ design. Wind turbine system with PI controller parameters obtained using the mentioned method is investigated via MATLAB/SIMULINK under three different scenarios. The wind system is subjected to step wind speed change, random wind speed, and sever symmetrical voltage dip in the grid. The handled comparison illustrates that the pole-placement tuning …

Mechanical Improvements And Control Implementation On A Biomimetic Quadruped Model, Matthew Jack Lutz
Dissertations and Theses
Robotic development started billions of years after earth first began biological prototyping. While the evolutionary process in animals is quite different from robotic prototyping, it still remains no surprise that animals remain more agile, more efficient, and more adaptable than even the most advanced engineered robots to date, simply due to the sheer length of their improvement process. While bridging this improvement gap between deficits in robots and the abilities of animals is difficult, a specific subfield of robotics engineering has attempted to do so using biomimetic robotics. At Portland State, the Agile and Adaptive Robotics Lab (AARL) studies these …

Folding Architecture “Origami Art-Inspired” Applicability To Sustainable Architecture- Biomuseo As A Case Study, Vitta A. Ibrahim
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The growing need for sustainable architectural solutions in the contemporary era underscores the necessity for interactive architectural applications that can adapt to changing requirements. In architecture, folding systems refer to three-dimensional, foldable structural forms that create unique spatial configurations and possess a wide range of capabilities. Drawing inspiration from origami techniques, this study emphasizes the role of folding systems in generating innovative spatial designs. The research problem arises from the fact that the built environment is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, necessitating the implementation of smart solutions. The goal of this study is to identify …

Current discussion surrounding the clinical capabilities of generative language models(GLMs) predominantly centers around multiple-choice question-answer(MCQA) benchmarks derived from clinical licensing examinations. While accepted for human examinees, characteristics unique to GLMs bring into question the validity of such benchmarks. Here, we validate five benchmarks using eight GLMs, ablating for parameter size and reasoning capabilities, validating via prompt permutation three key assumptions that underpin the generalizability of MCQA-based assessments: that knowledge is applied, not memorized, that semantic consistency will lead to consistent answers, and that situations with no answers can be recognized. While large models are more resilient to our perturbations compared …
