Mangrove forests play a critical role in carbon sequestration, biodiversity preservation, and coastal resilience, making their conservation and restoration essential in climate change mitigation. This study uses traditional field evaluations and remote sensing and geoinformatics (GIS) methods to examine how mangrove ecosystems in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have changed over time and space. We used Landsat satellite data from 2001 to 2024 and a set of vegetation indices, including SMRI, NDVI, GNDVI, EVI, and NDCI, to examine spatial patterns in biomass distribution, vegetation density, and overall ecosystem health. CO2 sequestration is a bit more climate-impact resilient. Even though the …

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic orthoflavivirus that poses a significant global health threat. It causes severe neuroinflammatory disease in humans and reproductive failure in swine. Because of the broad host range and cell tropism of JEV, identifying animal cell lines resistant to infection has been a persistent challenge. In this study, we demonstrate that Madin–Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells are resistant to JEV infection yet remain fully permissive to viral replication when transfected with viral genomic RNA. Using immunoblotting, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry, we show that MDBK cells, unlike the highly susceptible baby hamster kidney (BHK-21) cells …

Predicting Male Flowering Time In Maize Using Machine Learning Technique, Dipok Deb
Data Science and Data Mining
This study compares three machine learning approaches—Elastic Net, Principal Component Regression (PCR), and Partial Least Squares (PLS)—for variable selection and prediction within a high-dimensional Maize-GWAS framework. The goal was to accurately predict the complex polygenic trait of time to male flowering while managing the challenges of numerous, highly correlated genetic markers. The ENET model, which combines l1 and l2 penalties, delivered the highest predictive accuracy and successfully identified a select subset of the most influential genetic variants. In contrast, PCR and PLS, both utilizing dimension reduction, offered a significant advantage in computational speed and model stability. The findings confirm that …

Increasing plastic pollution has become a critical environmental issue, leading to challenges in management. Specifically, microplastics (MPs) are of particular concern because they can persist in aquatic ecosystems and adversely affect marine organisms. The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of MPs in the soft tissues of Patella caerulea (Linnaeus, 1758) collected from the Mersin Viranşehir coastal area. As no specimens were found in the supralittoral zone, the decision was taken to conduct sampling only in the mediolittoral and infralittoral zones. The total sampling area was 24 m2 divided into three 4-m2 plots in each zone. A …

Eyelids play a crucial role in protecting the eyes of vertebrates; however, certain reptile species, such as Ophisops elegans, completely lack movable eyelids. In this study, we present the first video-documented evidence of a blink-like reflex in O. elegans, captured through endoscopic field observations and corroborated by laboratory video analysis. The observed movement consisted of a brief convex deformation of the ocular surface, lasting approximately 0.3 s and resembling a blink despite the presence of a fixed transparent brille. This behavior was observed once in the field and twice under controlled laboratory conditions. We propose that O. elegans may employ …

Habitat Diversity Or Altitudinal Gradient? Which Factor Better Explains Ground Beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) Biodiversity? A Case Study From Davraz Mountain (Isparta, Türkiye), Ebru Ceren Fi̇dan, Ali̇ Gök
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Ground beetle (Carabidae) species diversity and spatial distribution were surveyed across five habitat types along an elevational gradient on Davraz Mountain, a biogeographical transition area in southwestern Türkiye. The analyses showed that habitat heterogeneity—particularly soil moisture and texture—exerts a stronger influence on carabid diversity than elevation. Sørensen’s and Jaccard similarity indices showed strong faunal overlap between some sampling areas, while multivariate principal components and canonical correspondence analyses verified distinct environmental gradients influencing community structure. Diversity indices indicated varying levels of species richness and evenness across sampling areas. The data highlight the importance of fine-scaled habitat features in driving ground beetle …

The common sunbleak (Leucaspius delineatus) is an invasive fish found in Siberian water bodies, the trophic interactions and impact on local ecosystems of which remain poorly understood. Traditional diet analyses are limited by the mechanical damage to the prey. For the present study, therefore, we employed DNA metabarcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) gene to analyze the digestive tract contents of the common sunbleak obtained from Irkutsk Reservoir. Our analysis revealed 53 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), with sequences of amphibiotic insects (58.66%) and fish (34.10%) being the most prevalent. A significant proportion of the fish DNA, including sequences …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Freshwater mussels are facing an increasing need for conservation due to their declining populations. More data is needed on mussel distributions, especially in tributaries of large rivers to properly conserve and restore populations. Big Shoal Creek and Little Shoal Creek are two upland-tributaries of the Arkansas River (Lake Dardanelle) in which no records exist for freshwater mussel populations. We addressed this knowledge gap by sampling a total of 9 sites in Little Shoal Creek and 18 sites in Big Shoal Creek to determine the abundance and distribution of mussels in these streams. Mussels were sampled using a timed-search approach. A …

Background: Trastuzumab, combined with chemotherapy, is the current standard treatment for both metastatic and early-stage HER2-positive (HER2 +) breast cancer. One of the mechanisms of action of trastuzumab is antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), which involves engaging FcγRIIIA (CD16) on natural killer (NK) cells. A competent immune system and properly functioning NK cells are crucial for effective ADCC, as they can influence favorable clinical outcomes. Resistance to trastuzumab often develops after about one year. We previously reported that elevated levels of miR-19a-3p in the serum of patients with metastatic HER2 + breast cancer treated with trastuzumab were associated with a favorable …

Despite significant advancement in cancer treatments, therapies with minimal toxicity to healthy cells are still limited. One targetable weakness of cancer cells is their sensitivity to oxidative stress. We find that the combination of two antioxidants—the common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and a manganese porphyrin in clinical trials, MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+ (MnBuOE)—increases oxidative stress and causes apoptotic death in several cancer cell lines, but not in mouse primary fibroblasts. Investigating the mechanism of cell death, MnBuOE is observed to catalyze the oxidation of tBHQ, producing the electrophilic quinone tert-butylquinone (tBQ). A critical role for tBQ and its electrophilic character was revealed with …

Human activities, either intentional or unintentional, have significantly influenced the global distribution and genetic composition of many species. The black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens; BSF) is a species native to North America that has rapidly gained commercial importance due to its bioconversion efficiency, upcycling organic waste into higher-value products. Through human-mediated dispersal associated with trade and insect farming, BSF has been introduced widely across the Old World, including Africa, where both wild and captive populations are now established. Despite its expanding global distribution, the demographic history and genomic consequences of these introductions remain poorly understood, particularly in Africa. This work …

Background
Bovine metritis is associated with uterine microbiota dysbiosis, characterized by the proliferation of Gram-negative anaerobes, including Fusobacterium necrophorum, Bacteroides pyogenes, and Porphyromonas levii. However, the mechanisms by which these opportunistic pathogens proliferate together and contribute to disease remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the interactions among these bacteria and to elucidate their role in the development of metritis.
Methods
F. necrophorum, B. pyogenes, and P. levii were isolated from the uteri of cows with metritis and cultured anaerobically in chopped meat carbohydrate broth. Bacterial growth, coaggregation, biofilm formation, endotoxin production, protease activity, adhesion to bovine endometrial epithelial (BEND) …

Effective management of modern electrical grids requires intelligent and adaptable control mechanisms to effectively balance power supply and demand, particularly in times of significant disturbances. Microgrids predominantly harness renewable energy sources (RES), which are inherently variable, for electricity generation. However, due to these fluctuations, conventional control systems often struggle to optimize performance under diverse operational conditions. This study addresses the need for improved frequency regulation in isolated AC microgrids (MGs) by proposing a fuzzy PI (FPI) controller capable of dynamically adjusting control strategies to accommodate disturbances such as three-phase faults, sudden changes in load, and variations in solar irradiance. Efficient nitrogen (N) management is essential for sustaining crop productivity while minimizing environmental impacts associated with excessive fertilizer use. Variable-rate application (VRA) offers a precision-based approach to matching N inputs with crop demand, yet winter wheat responses to reduced N rates are still underexplored. This study evaluated winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) performance under variable and uniform N application strategies using canopy greenness (NDVI), grain yield, plant N content, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and fertilizer costs as indicators. Reduced N treatments (40% and 60% VRA rates) were compared with a uniform (100%) application. Canopy greenness increased across all treatments over …

Arkansas cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) producers have made progress in sustainable production over the past twenty years with expanded adoption of soil and water conservation practices, including reduced tillage and use of winter cover crops. Producers have been uncertain about the need to modify other practices as they adopt conservation tillage systems, particularly the costly decision on whether to increase cotton seeding rates when they plant into stale seedbeds with high residue from terminated cover crops. To address this question, an on-farm experiment in northeast Arkansas was conducted to evaluate cotton performance with modified cotton seeding rates in rainfed or …
