The purpose of this investigation has been to determine to what extent there is evidence of a third carpel in the pistils of grasses. The study has been carried on, by means of cross and longitudinal sections, cut in different planes, as well as by a study of the external appearance of the pistils. This disease is also called "swamp fever" by farmers, and "pernicious anaemia" by veterinarians. In Nebraska many of the farmers call the disease "typhoid fever," for it resembles this fever very much. The manner in which the disease is contracted by horses is not definitely understood. In the last few years, the veterinarians in the Philippines have discovered a disease, prevalent in India under the name of "surra," the description of which corresponds very much to that of malarial fever of horses in this country, with the exception that bacteriologists have not been able to find the surra parasite in …

The material on which this paper is based was for the most part collected by the author in odd moments while doing other work in 1903. In all only about 400 specimens were taken. Some specimen collected by Prof. L. Bruner and Messrs. Cary and Carriker in 1902, as well as a few received from other people while in Costa Rica, were examined, all these being properly credited. Those having no collector's name after them were taken by the author. In addition to the species mentioned in the paper, quite a number of others were taken, which at present cannot …

Direct proof is found in the study of Morphology, whose bases are comparative anatomy; embryology; in the study of paleontology, of geology, of geographical distribution, in the study of nature and experiments of today. While in Central America I collected a number of species of Prosopis (descriptions to appear soon) which were typical representatives of that genus in every way. Scattered through this collection were a number of bees, very Prosopis-like, but possessing a truncated and appendiculated marginal cell and otherwise corresponding to Ashmead 's description of the genus Pasiphae, previously known only from the southern Andean region. In Trans. Am. Ent. Soc. XXIX, p. 186, Cockerell says "Mr. Vachal remarks that this has a distinct tibial pollen brush,. and cannot go with the Prosopidae. It appears to be a Colletid with only two …
