Bulletin No. 112 - A Report Of Seven Years' Investigation Of Dry Farming Methods, Lewis A. Merrill Dec 1910

Bulletin No. 112 - A Report Of Seven Years' Investigation Of Dry Farming Methods, Lewis A. Merrill

UAES Bulletins

The permanent settlement of Utah was made possible because of the introduction of irrigation methods but the growing of crops without irrigation was successfully practiced soon after the settlement of the territory. From the existing records and from the words of many of the veterans still living it is evident that many attempts were made to grow wheat in the early 50's without irrigation. Most of these attempts failed, because they were made on irrigated lands. In 1865, however, an experiment on a much more extended scale was made.

New Studies Of The Arrhenuri, Ruth Marshall Dec 1910

New Studies Of The Arrhenuri, Ruth Marshall

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Since the publication of "The Arrhenuri of the United States," in 198, the author has been fortunate enough to secure enough more material to justify the publication of a supplementary paper on this large genus of water-mites. This material consists of collections from new localities in the United States, and of additional material from old collecting grounds, together with a few specimens from other countries. The author's own collections were made in Wisconsin and Illinois. A few new places were visited, as the lakes about Milwaukee ; and more extensive collections were made in previously known bodies of water, as …

Bulletin No. 110 - The Alfalfa Leaf-Weevil, E. G. Titus Sep 1910

Bulletin No. 110 - The Alfalfa Leaf-Weevil, E. G. Titus

UAES Bulletins

The alfalfa leaf-weevil (Phytonomus murinus Fab.) which has during the last three years been doing considerable damage in the central part of this State, is a European insect which by some means unknown has been introduced in to Utah. The species appears to be not uncommon throughout Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. It belongs to the large order of hard-shelled insects called beetles (Coleoptera) and in a group generally called snout-beetles (Family Curculionidae). To this same group belong many of our most serious pests, such as the plum curculio, cotton boll-weevil and strawberry weevil.

It occurs over all …

Bulletin No. 109 - The Nitrogen And Humus Problem In Dry-Land Farming, Robert Stewart

UAES Bulletins

The effect of cultivation and the growth of crops upon the nitrogen and humus content of soils has been studied by various investigators, both in America and Europe. In general, the results of the various investigations indicate that cropping and cultivation are very destructive of the organic. matter and the nitrogen of the surface soil.

New Hymenoptera From The Phillipine Islands, J. C. Crawford

Co

The species described in this paper were for the most part collected by the Rev. Robert E. Brown, S. J., although a few are from the material gathered by the Rev. William A. Stanton, S. J. Under each species credit has been given to the collector. In the Philippine Journal of Science a Father Brown has given a list of the species of Hymenoptera found in the islands and has cited several names sent him by the late Dr. W. H. Ashmead which are manuscript names. In describing these species, of which no manuscript has been found, the name used …

Bulletin No. 108 - The Effect Of Formalin On The Vitality Of Seed Grain, Robert Stewart, John Stephens Apr 1910

Bulletin No. 108 - The Effect Of Formalin On The Vitality Of Seed Grain, Robert Stewart, John Stephens

UAES Bulletins

The Utah Experiment Station for a number of years has recommended the formalin treatment for the prevention of smut in wheat, oats and barley. Since the publication of Bulletin No. 84 by Prof. L. A. Merrill on the Subject, a number of complaints regarding the treatment have been received. We learned, also, by traveling over the state, that these complaints were quite general. The work reported in this bulletin was undertaken for the purpose of throwing light on these questions, and it is hoped that the results obtained will be of value to the farmers of the state.

Testing Seed Corn, E. G. Montgomery, C. W. Pugsley Mar 1910

Testing Seed Corn, E. G. Montgomery, C. W. Pugsley

University of Nebraska Historical Extension: Bulletin

Testing every ear of seed corn will cost about 5 to 10 cents per acre, and may mean 5 to 10 bushels per acre increased yield. Do it now before the rush of farm work. In many parts of the state not one-half the seed corn will grow. Reports from Farmers' Institutes in various sections indicate that the vitality is very low.
