The Nebraska Tractor Law And Rules For Official Tractor Tests, L. W. Chase, E. E. Brackett, O. W. Sjogren, C. K. Shedd Dec 1919

The Nebraska Tractor Law And Rules For Official Tractor Tests, L. W. Chase, E. E. Brackett, O. W. Sjogren, C. K. Shedd

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The Nebraska Tractor Law, which became effective July 15, 1919, was enacted to encourage the manufacture and sale of improved types of tractors and to contribute to a more successful use of the tractor for farming. It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public. These tests will give reliable information on the power, capacity and fuel consumption of each tractor and also some information on endurance. The …

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward Dec 1919

Notes On North American Myxosporidia, Henry Baldwin Ward

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

In this paper are published data on three new species of Myxosporidia. Two species were observed in Lake Erie as parasites of a minnow; the third came from a species of Pacific salmon. Both cases present some unusual features that seem worthy of record.

Included are descriptions of Myxobolus aureatus nov. spec., Henneguya brachyura nov. sp., and Henneguya salminicola nov. spec.

I am greatly indebted to my colleague, Dr. Rokusaburo Kudo, for valuable assistance given while I was working up the material. The beautiful sketch illustrating the species from Lake Erie was prepared by Mrs. H. S. Jennings, to whom …

Relative Transpiration Of Coniferous And Broad-Leaved Trees In Autumn And Winter, J. E. Weaver, A. Mogensen Dec 1919

Relative Transpiration Of Coniferous And Broad-Leaved Trees In Autumn And Winter, J. E. Weaver, A. Mogensen

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Transpiration has been of special interest to many investigators for a long time. At first it was considered without reference to environmental factors, but later, as more observations were made and these factors were noted to have a marked effect upon the water loss, they were taken into consideration. Many of the data assembled have been limited to plants during the growing season, so that it has seemed profitable to obtain not only quantitative data on winter losses, but also a comparison of the relative transpiration of conifers and broad-leaved trees in summer and winter.

Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell Nov 1919

Fusarium Blight Of The Soy Bean And The Relation Of Various Factors To Infection, Richard O. Cromwell

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

An investigation was outlined (1) to determine the parasitism of Fusarium on soy bean, (2) to establish its relationship to Fusaria of the section Elegans in so far as a comparison of the cultural characters permitted, and (3) by means of cross- inoculations and field studies to determine the relationship of this disease of soy beans to the wilt disease of cowpeas (Vigna sinensis Hassk.) caused by Fusarium tracheiphilum Smith. The results of these investigations up to the close of the summer of 1916 have been reported. The studies were continued at the North Carolina Experiment Station until the …

The Nearctic Psammocharids Of The Genus Aporinellus Banks, Joseph Bequaert Oct 1919

The Nearctic Psammocharids Of The Genus Aporinellus Banks, Joseph Bequaert

Ba

On one of the collecting trips made this summer with Prof. William M. Wheeler, in the vicinity of Boston, I collected a little Psammocharid which has proved to be an undescribed species of Aporinellus. In comparing this specimen with Mr. Nathan Banks' extensive collection of Psammocharids I have found another undescribed member of the same genus. Descriptions of both forms are given herewith, together with a brief review of the group. I am much indebted to Mr. Nathan Banks, of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge, Mass., for the loan of rich material containing many types and for valuable bibliographic …

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens Oct 1919

Dairy Barn And Milk House Arrangement, J. H. Frandsen, W. B. Nevens

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

From an economic point of view, as well as from the standpoint of animal comfort, it is highly desirable that adequate barn or shed facilities be provided for the dairy herd. Some farmers have developed the idea that to keep cows healthy and comfortable and to produce sanitary milk it is absolutely necessary to have expensive barns. As a matter of fact, many of the dairy barns where sanitation is the primary object are quite inexpensive. On the other hand, if the barn is conveniently arranged and made to embody the most accepted sanitary features, it is very essential that …

Marketing Nebraska Potatoes, J. O. Rankin Oct 1919

Marketing Nebraska Potatoes, J. O. Rankin

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Marketing Nebraska potatoes is no less important than raising them. It is often much more difficult, yet the pay for this service is grudgingly given. Failure to secure a good market causes more men to hesitate to enter or stay in the potato business than field risks. The full usefulness of the potato has not been secured until it is on the consumer's table. Every process necessary to get it there is a useful and productive process and the grower is no less productively engaged when working to find a market or to get these perishable wares into it than …

On The Specific Identity Of Heronimus Chelydrae Maccallum And Aorchis Extensus Barker And Parsons, Horace Wesley Stunkard

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

The monostomes are among the least known of North American trematode groups. Records give descriptions of only six species, each the single representative of a genus, and according to the classification of Ward (1918) belonging to four different families. Existing descriptions in most cases are far from complete and data necessary for taxonomic determination are lacking. This deficiency has been pointed out by other workers, both in this country and in Europe, and the classification of the monostomes is not well established. In fact, certain investigators regard them as aberrant forms, sprung from different distome groups, which alike have lost …

Bulletin No. 170 - A Study Of Methods Of Determining Soil Alkali, D. W. Pittman Aug 1919

Bulletin No. 170 - A Study Of Methods Of Determining Soil Alkali, D. W. Pittman

UAES Bulletins

There is a great lack of uniformity in the methods of testing soils for alkali salts and in the forms of expressing the results in a way that will show the relative toxicity of the salts. This has been pointed out by numerous investigators and has been shown to complicate the determinations so much that the results of different investigators are hardly comparable. It is of further disadvantage in that the toxic limits of an alkali as worked out by one system of analysis are often difficultly applicable to a soil that has been tested by another system. However, it …

Bulletin No. 169 - The Use Of Alkali Water For Irrigation, F. S. Harris, N. I. Butt

UAES Bulletins

Because of the scanty rainfall of arid regions, the soluble materials in the rocks and soil are not leached out as they are where the rainfall is high. As a result, the accumulation of excessive quantities of soluble salts is likely to be a menace to arid soils. Farm practices must be directed toward preventing this condition.

Bulletin No. 168 - Relative Resistance Of Various Crops Ot Alkali, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman Jul 1919

Bulletin No. 168 - Relative Resistance Of Various Crops Ot Alkali, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman

UAES Bulletins

Plants show considerable variation in their resistance to soil alkali. Some varieties of native vegetation grow only where the salt content of the soil is high. Most of the cultivated plants, on the other hand, are injured very decidedly by the presence of large quantities of soluble salts. To this rule there are a few exceptions such as the date palm.

In most of the arid parts of the world there are sections where the presence of alkali is the chief limiting factor in crop growth. Millions of acres of land are in the border zone between complete freedom from …

Advertising Farm Products, Geo A. Starring Jul 1919

Advertising Farm Products, Geo A. Starring

SDSU Extension Circulars

Advertising is now regarded as essential in placing any commodity on the market. Advertising puts goods where they will be of maximum service. It follows that such a place will pay the highest price. Farmers of South Dakota are intensely interested in this phase of marketing. Individual farmers usually look for a local market where the advertising medium is chiefly local. This is especially true in respect t0 the sale and exchange of livestock and seeds of various kinds in smaller lots. A community of farmers who have considerable produce of a certain standard kind might advertise cooperatively to good …

Purebred Sires Effect Herd Improvement, M. N. Lawritson, J. W. Hendrickson, W. B. Nevens Jul 1919

Purebred Sires Effect Herd Improvement, M. N. Lawritson, J. W. Hendrickson, W. B. Nevens

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The real worth of a sire for the dairy herd can be established only when production records of the progeny are available for comparison with those of the preceding generation. A study of the following three sires which have been in service in the University of Nebraska dairy herd should be of interest to the Nebraska dairyman wishing to improve his own herd. This experiment indicates that the apparently high cost of a good herd sire is more than outweighed by the increase in the value of the progeny.

Bulletin No. 166 - The Climate Of Utah, Frank L. West, N. E. Edlefsen Mar 1919

Bulletin No. 166 - The Climate Of Utah, Frank L. West, N. E. Edlefsen

UAES Bulletins

Climate is of interest and importance to the scientist in general. It is particularly important to the investigator in the field of agriculture because growing crops are affected quite as much by sunlight, heat, rain, and frost as by the fertility of the soil. In field investigations these factors must be determined and reckoned with.
