Co-Operative Wool Marketing In South Dakota, J. C. Holmes
Co-Operative Wool Marketing In South Dakota, J. C. Holmes
SDSU Extension Circulars
During 1918 and 1919 several of the counties of the state, through the help of their farm bureaus and county agricultural agents, assisted sheep raisers in marketing their wool cooperatively via the county wool pool system. This method afforded a great many advantages over the old system wherein each sheepman marketed his wool privately to county buyers, in that it made possible selling on a grade basis, assembling the wool in car lots, and in many other respects reduced the expense of marketing considerably. However, by the spring of 1920, it had become evident that the county pooling system had …
Circular No. 45 - Alfalfa Production Under Irrigation, George Stewart
Circular No. 45 - Alfalfa Production Under Irrigation, George Stewart
UAES Circulars
Alfalfa was first planted and cared for by half-civilized man long before any history was written. In spite of the fact that its line of descent has come thru the Medes and Persians by way of the Greeks, the Romans, the Moslems, and the Spaniards,--in spite of long sojourns in many lands, the heritage is still undefiled. Instead of losing in adaptability, possibly long centuries of trial have made it more fit. At any rate, here it is: high in power to yield, rich in power to nourish.
With its deep roots it laughs at drought and mellows up the …
Vegetation Mapping, Paul B. Sears
Vegetation Mapping, Paul B. Sears
Papers in Ecology
The value of accurate maps of native vegetation as a basis for very practical generalizations can not be questioned. It is obvious that an essential condition for getting accurate maps of large areas is the existence of precise maps of smaller component ones. At present very few precise local maps are available, but it is to be hoped that botanists throughout the country will begin to supplement the efforts of a few of their number who are doing map work of permanent and general' value.
Circular No. 44 - The Agriculture Of Utah, F. S. Harris
Circular No. 44 - The Agriculture Of Utah, F. S. Harris
UAES Circulars
Agriculture is so intimately related to all other industries that anything which affects the farmer reflects itself in all branches of business. The banker, the merchant, and the manufacturer must keep in touch with crop and livestock conditions of the country in order to foresee the tendencies of their own businesses. This is particularly true in a state like Utah which depends fundamentally on the products of the soil for its prosperity.
Numerous requests are received by the Experiment Station from prospective settlers living out side of the state for information concerning the agriculture of Utah. These have been kept …
Bulletin No. 180 - The Irrigation Of Alfalfa, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman
Bulletin No. 180 - The Irrigation Of Alfalfa, F. S. Harris, D. W. Pittman
UAES Bulletins
In the United States alfalfa-growing has gone hand in hand with the development of irrigation. Alfalfa did not become an important crop in the country until after irrigation began to be practised in the West. Very soon after the pioneers reached Utah, alfalfa was brought to the state where it found conditions well suited to its growth. Wherever settlement extended alfalfa was raised as one of the most important crops, and finally from the West it has spread eastward into the humid parts of the country.
The Regional Adaptation Of Corn In Nebraska, T. A. Kiesselbach, F. D. Keim
The Regional Adaptation Of Corn In Nebraska, T. A. Kiesselbach, F. D. Keim
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The purpose of this investigation was to determine some of the factors involved in the regional adaptation of corn. The procedure has been to make a comparative study of native corn types, known to be locally adapted to various regional areas in Nebraska through long growth there. The work has been confined to the single species group - Zea mays indentata. No one variety of a common source is grown throughout the state, and therefore it has been impossible to keep within a single variety. It would appear that the data should indicate morphological and histological plant characteristics involved …

The Nebraska Tractor Law And Rules For Official Tractor Tests, O. W. Sjogren, E. E. Brackett, C. W. Smith, F. R. Nohavec
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
The Nebraska Tractor Law, which became effective July 15, 1919, was enacted to encourage the manufacture and sale of improved types of tractors and to contribute to a more successful use of the tractor for farming. It was thought that the best method of accomplishing these objects would be to require a tractor of each model sold in the State to be tested at the State University and to have the results of these tests made public.
A New Blood Fluke From Turtles, Henry Baldwin Ward
A New Blood Fluke From Turtles, Henry Baldwin Ward
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
For several years an interesting trematode has been under observation in the laboratory here. It occurs in various species of turtles, and was first discovered in some material shipped in from the south for class work. Peculiar importance attaches to the fact that it is a species inhabiting the circulatory system, and in fact it shows a relationship to the blood-inhabiting flukes of man which has become more clearly evident as the observations have accumulated. Since the material is easily obtained, it will afford perhaps the best opportunity available in this country for the laboratory study of forms adapted to …
Variation In Taraxacum, Paul B. Sears
Variation In Taraxacum, Paul B. Sears
Papers in Ecology
To the editor of Science: Since several species of Taraxacum are parthenogenetic and at the same time highly variable they have. looked like tempting material for the study of certain phases of genetics. Moreover their "polysnorphy," as well as that of other parthenogenetic plants, has served as a partial basis for well-known attempts to explain parthenogenesis as due to hybridization.

Bulletin No. 179 - Apple Candy: A Commercial Use For Cull Apples, T. H. Abell
Bulletin No. 179 - Apple Candy: A Commercial Use For Cull Apples, T. H. Abell
UAES Bulletins
Utah annually produces many tons of apples that never reach the consumer. These apples remain on the farm for various rwasons: (1) because there are not adequate marketing facilities, (2) because the fruit is of inferior quality, (3) because orchard units are too small for buyers to consider, and (4) because home orchards are so large that the crop cannot be utilized. On the other hand, apples of inferior quality go to the market alongside apples of high quality. The result is a lowering of the price of apples in general and dissatisfaction on the part of the retailer and …

Bulletin No 69 - The Poison Plants Of Western Australia, D. A. Herbert
Bulletins 1 - 2999
Up to the present no publication dealing with the whole of the known i)01S0fl plaits of Western Australia has been written. This Bulletin contains the collected accounts of various authors and correspondents which have been published at different times and contains a large amount of original information gathered both from field experience and from laboratory experiments. The work is not complete. A number of plants from distant districts have not been obtainable or obtainable only in amounts insufficient for exhaustive tests. These plants are comparatively few, however, and in Section 13 of this publication those which are suspected, but against …

Bulletin No 84 - Tomatoes - Their Culture In Western Australia, H. D. Larwood
Bulletins 1 - 2999
The use of the tomato has become so general during recent years that it is now in great demand as one of the most popular and wholesome articles of diet.
The plant is heat-loving, but is easily destroyed by host. In temperate regions it is seasonable during the summer months. With suitable methods an early crop can be produced several weeks earlier than the main crop, and several months before stone fruits are available; because of this the "early' crop of tomatoes is usually a most profitable one. "Early" tomatoes placed oni the market during September and October often realise …

Lignum-Vitae: A Study Of The Woods Of The Zygophyllaceae With Reference To The True Lignum-Vitae Of Commerce--Its Sources, Properties, Uses, And Substitutes, Samuel J. Record
Yale School of the Environment Bulletin Series
The true lignum-vitae of commerce belongs to the family Zygophyllaceae, of which only three genera, namely, Guaiacum, Porlieria, and Bulnesia, have representatives of tree size, and these are confined to the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the Western Hemisphere. Porlieria is of no commerical importance.
The Apple-Tree Tent Caterpillar, A. L. Quaintance
The Apple-Tree Tent Caterpillar, A. L. Quaintance
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The Apple-Tree Tent Caterpillar makes the unsightly nests or tents to be seen in the spring in trees along roadways, fences, and streams, and' in orchards. It varies greatly in abundance from year to year or over longer periods. Wild cherry is the favorite food plant, but many other plants are attacked, including several orchard fruits, especially the apple. During years when caterpillars are abundant the trees may be so completely stripped of their foliage that larvae are forced to hunt other food plants and hence are to be seen in numbers crawling over the ground and fences and elsewhere. …

Heritable Characters Of Maize: Ix. Crinkly Leaf, R. A. Emerson
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
In 1910 a strain of dent corn obtained at the National Corn Exposition held at Omaha was crossed with a strain of flint corn obtained from the Department of Agronomy of the University of Nebraska. The F1 plants of this cross were normal and no abnormalities had been observed in the parent strains. But since the latter had not been subjected to self-pollination, there is no assurance that one or other of them did not have in it the character to be described here. In the F2 generation of this cross there occurred a tpe of plant that …

The Relative Frequency Of Crossing Over In Microspore And In Megaspore Development In Maize, R. A. Emerson, C. B. Hutchison
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
One of the early developments in the study of linkage in Drosophila was the discovery that the phenomenon of crossing over is confined to the female sex (Morgan 1912). The fact that no crossing over occurs in the male Drosophila holds true not only for sex-linked genes but for factors in the autosomes as well and is so well established that it affords a most convenient method of determining to which of the different linkage groups a new factor belongs.
The same phenomenon, but with the sexes reversed, obtains in the silkworm moth. Tanaka (1914, 1915) has found from back-cross …
Bulletin No. 177 - Some Types Of Irrigation Farming In Utah, E. B. Brossard
Bulletin No. 177 - Some Types Of Irrigation Farming In Utah, E. B. Brossard
UAES Bulletins
As ordinarily used "type of farming" suggests general contrasts in the nature of farm business. The bases used in making these contrasts are: (1) sources of farm income, (2) number of farm enterprises, (3) amount of labor, capital, and management applied to each acre of land, and (4) farm practice with reference to maintenance of soil fertility. When based on sources of farm income, farms are classified as grain farms, hay farms, fruit farms, dairy farms, etc., according to the proportionate magnitude of the income from the different sources. When the number of farm enterprises is used as the basis, …
Bulletin No. 176 - Potato Improvement By Hill Selection, George Stewart
Bulletin No. 176 - Potato Improvement By Hill Selection, George Stewart
UAES Bulletins
Potatoes are such an important food and are grown on so many farms in Utah that any method of permanently improving the crop is highly desirable. Commercial producers can of course capitalize any practical method of potato improvement.
This field of experimentation is not new, for many workers have attempted to improve the potato crop by selection. Success, however, has been neither uniform nor always appreciable; many of the experiments were of short duration, and many were not conducted on a sufficiently large scale to be good tests. It is apparent from this meager statement that the possibilities" of potato …

SDSU Extension Circulars
The past year has been filled with unusual activity and interest along the different phases of agricultural extension work. The demand for the services of the different extension workers has greatly increased, so much so that it has become a problem as to how their time may be best assigned to accomplish the most.
Extension work is based upon cooperation. The counties, state, and government cooperate in finding the problems and in solving them. Some of these agricultural and rural problems may be solved in the local community; others need the assistance of the whole county; other problems, again, are …
Circular No. 43 - Feeding Work Horses, W. E. Carroll
Circular No. 43 - Feeding Work Horses, W. E. Carroll
UAES Circulars
The intelligent feeding of the work horses of the State of Utah would save each year thousands of dollars in feed and prevent sickness and death of hundreds of horses.
In Circular 32 of this station a brief discussion is given of some of the more theoretical aspects of the feeding of farm animals as they might apply in general to all classes of livestock. Consideration is given to such questions as the composition and digestibility of feeds, the uses to which the digested portions are put in the animal body, the calculation and balancing of rations, how to judge …
Septic Tank For Sewage Disposal On The Farm, Ralph L. Patty
Septic Tank For Sewage Disposal On The Farm, Ralph L. Patty
SDSU Extension Circulars
The purpose of this little circular is to show the plan for constructing an efficient and inexpensive septic tank for the disposal of sewage from the farm home. If properly installed, this tank will need no attention whatsoever except the removal of the greater part of the sludge every three or four years. If a larger plan for the tank is desired, it may be obtained in blueprint form for five cents (to cover the cost of the blue print paper) by addressing the Extension Division of the South Dakota State College, Brookings, S. Dak.
A Serviceable Farm Barn, Ralph L. Patty
A Serviceable Farm Barn, Ralph L. Patty
SDSU Extension Circulars
There is a great demand for the plan of a general barn suitable for a South Dakota farm of from a quarter to a half section of land. Not only are old buildings being replaced but a very great number of larger tracts are being divided into separate farms, and entire sets of new buildings are being erected. These facts, more than any others, probably account for the large number of requests received by the Extension Division for such a plan. The plan presented in this circular is what we believe will best meet this need.
