Planting The Corn Crop, Ralph E. Johnston, George H. Valentine Jan 1923

Planting The Corn Crop, Ralph E. Johnston, George H. Valentine

SDSU Extension Circulars

Corn is America’s leading cereal crop and it is indeed necessary that there be adequate machinery for handling this crop. However, it is only by continuous efforts to insure good yields that modern corm machinery has been produced. Among these improved machines the corn planter is very important. To get the seed corn planted is of the greatest importance in securing a good crop. The corn grower must have equipment which is unexcelled to use for this operation. The modern farmer who is up-to-date assures himself that all seed corn used has a germination test of at least 98%. The …

Phases Of Poultry Work (Caponizing And Capons), Clara M. Sutter Jan 1923

Phases Of Poultry Work (Caponizing And Capons), Clara M. Sutter

SDSU Extension Circulars

No farmer in South Dakota would think of keeping all male animals for breeding purposes unless he had an opportunity to sell them to other breeders, for he ·would realize that the price on the open market would be much less than for castrated animals. It is a well-known fact that castration changes the male animal so that it is easily handled, less nervous and excitable, and more easily fattened. Therefore, all male sheep, hogs, cattle, and horses not need for breeding purposes are subjected to this operation while young.

Phases Of Poultry Work (How To Show Poultry), Clara M. Sutter

SDSU Extension Circulars

To those who are exhibiting for the first time there comes many a question in regard to the selection of the birds to be shown and the preparations to be made after they have been chosen. The birds chosen must conform as nearly as possible to the standard for the breed if they are to be among those to win a prize. The exhibitor should think of the prize, not as so much money or as a much desired article, but as a sign of an achievement, a piece of work well done.

Phases Of Poultry Work (Feeding For Market), Clara M. Sutter Jan 1923

Phases Of Poultry Work (Feeding For Market), Clara M. Sutter

SDSU Extension Circulars

Since fully 75 percent of all poultry shipped from the farm to the market are not fat enough to kill, the subject of feeding is an important one. When the live fowls arrive at the packing plant, they are placed in crates to be fattened for from five to fourteen days, according to age and condition, before being killed. Sometimes men buy the poultry from the farms at a low rate, fatten for the required length of time, then sell to the packer, thus making the money for the quick gain that the producers might have had for a little …

Phases Of Poultry Work (Diseases Of Young Chicks), Clara M. Sutter Jan 1923

Phases Of Poultry Work (Diseases Of Young Chicks), Clara M. Sutter

SDSU Extension Circulars

Feeding too soon, crowding, chilling, or overheating caused the death of many young chicks. Much loss is cause by saving the weak or crippled chicks which were not strong enough to get out of the shell by themselves. This is a mistake for by making these and watching carefully it has been found that about 2 percent live and these are never strong healthy chicks. They are the first to get disease, often spreading it among the healthy ones.

To be well dressed is the legitimate ambition of every girl. Clothing was used primarily for physical comfort only, but now also serves as an adornment, adding or detracting from one’s charm. Clothing also reflects one’s character. With the amount of time and money allowed for the clothing of the average girl she may make herself attractive and add enjoyment to others.

Definite Corn Breeding Plots, Ralph E. Johnston, George H. Valentine Jan 1923

Definite Corn Breeding Plots, Ralph E. Johnston, George H. Valentine

SDSU Extension Circulars

There is no certainty among plant breeders as regards the origin of the corn plant. Certain authorities claim that corn originated in Mexico from a cross between game grass and a cross between a sport of teosinte grass and the original plant. Regardless of the origin of the corn plant we are very sure that great strides have been made in the development of the corn plant and there is no reason why we should assume that further development will not take place.

Decorative Stitches And Handmade Flowers, Azalea Linfield Jan 1923

Decorative Stitches And Handmade Flowers, Azalea Linfield

SDSU Extension Circulars

The decorations of a garment need not be elaborate or expensive. The elaborately decorated dress is often in poor taste. Simple embroidery or self-trimming add to the appearance of garments. A simple little hand touch will usually add distinction and charm. The most expensive gowns from the most exclusive shops are extremes in simplicity. The more decoration used on ready to wear garments usually the cheaper the garment. Decoration is too often used to hide inferior workmanship and poor quality. The decoration may make or mar the dress. The trimming used must look as though it belonged to the garment.

8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert Jan 1923

8. The South And Central African Species Of The Genus Synagris Latreille (Hymenoptera), Joseph Bequaert

Ba

This is the first of a series of articles in which I shall deal with the diplopterous wasps of South and Central Africa, south of 10° S. lat. The area under consideration includes the south-eastern portion of the Belgian Congo, or the Katanga district, which in its fauna and flora has many points in common with Northern Rhodesia, and differs considerably from the equatorial Congo belt. Since for lack of material the wasps of the Katanga could not be fully treated before, the present paper will supplement my Revision of Congo Vespidae (1918).

Enkele Beschouwingen Over Kleuren En Kleurgroepen Bij Plooivleugelige Wespen, (1), Joseph Bequaert

Ba
