Circular No. 75 - Selecting Dairy Cows: Appearance Less Important Than Performance, George Q. Bateman

UAES Circulars

This is a cost study of three aged grade cows--E-10, E-11, and E-13--handled under identical conditions on the Dairy Experimental Farm. The three cows have been treated exactly the same since they came into the herd, all of the feed being weighed to each cow and the feed ref used weighed back. Each milking has been weighed and sampled daily; butterfat tests have been made every ten days.

Bulletin No. 207 - The Physical Cure Character Of Milk And Its Relationship To The Digestability And Food Value Of Milk For Infants, R. L. Hill Jun 1928

Bulletin No. 207 - The Physical Cure Character Of Milk And Its Relationship To The Digestability And Food Value Of Milk For Infants, R. L. Hill

UAES Bulletins

In the feeding of infants,' cows' milk is the best and most common substitute for human milk. In the feeding of delicate infants, however, considerable difficulty is often experienced from its use. The ideal substitute for mothers' milk has not been found, and most of the clinical effort has been directed towards the modification of cows' milk for infants.

Comparatively little research has been done on the difference in the digestibility and food value of milks from different cows for the infant. It is a well-known fact that the curd of cows' milk forms in a tough mass which varies …

Bulletin No. 206 - Treehopper Injury In Utah Orchards, Charles J. Sorenson Jun 1928

Bulletin No. 206 - Treehopper Injury In Utah Orchards, Charles J. Sorenson

UAES Bulletins

Treehopper injury is a problem that has given many fruit growers in Utah some concern during recent years. These people have observed that their young fruit trees and the twigs and smaller branches of older trees have been attacked during the autumn of each year in a manner that produced numerous cuts which later formed scars. The trees frequently became unthrifty, and more or less deformed and stunted, as a result of these annual attacks.

The investigation reported in this publication was made for the purpose of ascertaining the present status of the treehopper situation in Utah orchards.

Bulletin No. 205 - The Beet Leafhopper In Utah: A Study Of Its Distribution And The Occurrence Of Curly-Top, George F. Knowlton Jun 1928

Bulletin No. 205 - The Beet Leafhopper In Utah: A Study Of Its Distribution And The Occurrence Of Curly-Top, George F. Knowlton

UAES Bulletins

The sugar-beet industry of Utah, and many other western states, has suffered enormous losses from curly-top. Under natural conditions this disease is transmitted, so far as known, solely through the feeding of the beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), the so-called "white fly." The serious damage of 1924 and 1926 has especially emphasized the necessity for more knowledge concerning the problem.

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking Jun 1928

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking

Bachelors’ Theses

The earliest resultful work done in Pteridophytes, very closely similar to Botrychium Virginianum Swartz, was the work of Goebel (1890) on the Ophioglossales. Bower (1890) followed Goebel in his work on the Ophioglossales. He completed a work in 1896, which according to Burlingame (1907), who also did valuable work on the Ophioglossales, is the most comprehensive and satisfactory that has thus far been done. This work had a stimulating effect upon the early study of Botrychium Virginianum Swartz because of the almost entirely similar histology of the two plants. Burlingame’s (1907) work in the Ophioglossales, was done in 1907. He …

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib Jun 1928

The Anatomy Of The Honeybee, Carol M. Steib

Bachelors’ Theses

The honeybee has lived In a society under such complex laws and has executed such varied and difficult labors that it has attracted the attention of men and women from the very earliest of times. Aristotle, Cato, Varro, Pliny, Columella, Pollodius, all studied the bee; as also did Arlstomachus (who, if we are to believe Cicero, watched them for forty-eight years) and Phylisius whose writings have been lost.

Branched Cells Of Pteris Cretica L., Var. "Albo-Lineata, Hort And Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl", Mary Elizabeth Trechter

Bachelors’ Theses

The fern gametophyte offers a large field for experimental work, not only in the reproductive processes but in the development of prothallia from the germination of the spore. The ordinary fern spore germinates on soil or in water. Prothallia, which have formed branched cells, have been found by a number of workers, and attempts have been made by some to explain the cause of the branching.

The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Embryo Of Pellaea Viridis (Forksk) Prantl, Eugene Stowell Mcdonough

Bachelors’ Theses

A sporophyte tissue element in the cells of a fern gametophyte was first reported by Leszcyc-Suminski (1848) who found tracheids near the apical notch of the prothallium of Pteris sulcata L.

Favorable Cultural Conditions For Tuber Development In Nephrolepis Cordifolia (L.) Presl. (Nephrolepis Tuberosa (Bory.)Willd.), Hazel Mae Henderson

Bachelors’ Theses

Recently there has been brought to the attention of writers a number of plants that produce water-storing organs commonly known as tubers. Luerssen, (Campbell, 1905) refers to special reproductive bodies or tubers in Marsilia hirsuta. These tubers are thought to survive long periods of drought, and to germinate under favorable conditions. Nephrolepis cordifolia (L.) Presl., one of the Boston ferns, which produces tubers in large numbers has interested a number of investigators.

Circular No. 71 - Weeds: Losses, Agencies In Distribution, Nature, And Control, William Peterson, D. C. Tingey May 1928

Circular No. 71 - Weeds: Losses, Agencies In Distribution, Nature, And Control, William Peterson, D. C. Tingey

UAES Circulars

There are in Utah a number of weeds considered to be unusually persistent and difficult to eradicate once they have become established. The most common in this group are wild morning glory, whitetop, Canada thistle, perennial sow thistle, and Russian knapweed, the last being one of comparatively recent introduction. The weeds in this group are quite generally feared and much talked of by farmers. They are feared because, if allowed to persist, they usually take possession of the soil and hinder the growth of farm crops. The discouraging fact about these weeds is their spread. Old infested areas are increasing …

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann May 1928

The Anatomy Of The Timber Rattlesnake, Ruth H. Heinemann

Bachelors’ Theses

Snakes are the most highly specialized of all reptiles. The absence of limbs, in itself, is a great specialization. They possess a great modification of the jaws which enables them to engulf large prey entire. Probably the most out standing specialization is the remarkable modification of dentition in the venomous snakes. The so-called fangs are nothing more than teeth modified to a great degree.

The Distribution, Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Genus Salix Of Utah County, Utah, Kenneth Edward Weight May 1928

The Distribution, Taxonomy And Ecology Of The Genus Salix Of Utah County, Utah, Kenneth Edward Weight

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose or this paper is to make the willows of Utah end especially Utah County familiar to persons of moderate taxonomic skill. The Willow Family has become somewhat neglected by classes in taxonomy and the botanist in general because of not having a key -- except in one or two cases, that takes into consideration characters other than the fruits or capsules. To identify a willow in late summer is almost impossible by the beginning botanist, because few, if any, flowers, fruits and capsules can be found. In this paper external cheracters will be considered in descriptions. It must …

Inheritance Of Awns In A Cross Between Hard Federation And Kota Wheats, B. Ira Judd May 1928

Inheritance Of Awns In A Cross Between Hard Federation And Kota Wheats, B. Ira Judd

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past few years there have been numerous studies made of various characters in wheat. Some characters which were thought at first to be simple in inheritance have since been found to be rather complex.

The data in the following pages are the results of an investigation made to study the inheritance of awns in a cross between Hard Federation and Kota varieties of wheat.

Correlated Inheritance In Wheat Iii Federation X Iii C 18 (Dicklow X Sevier Hybrid), D. E. Heywood May 1928

Correlated Inheritance In Wheat Iii Federation X Iii C 18 (Dicklow X Sevier Hybrid), D. E. Heywood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Several wheat characters have been shown to exhibit rather complicated inheritance. Examples are such characters as culm length, spike density, and awn classes. This paper reports a study of the inheritance and of the correlated inheritance of these and some other plant characters in a cross between a hybrid of Dicklow X Sevier (III C 18) with Federation.

Circular No. 72 - Brooding And Feeding Chicks, Byron Alder Apr 1928

Circular No. 72 - Brooding And Feeding Chicks, Byron Alder

UAES Circulars

The poultry raiser who does not plan and lay the foundation for a better flock each year is missing an opportunity to increase his financial returns and to make each year's poultry crop more secure. Under present conditions the profit made by a flock of hens is usually in direct proportion to the fall and winter egg production of the flock. Production during this period depends very largely on the success of the poultry raiser in developing each year's flock of pullets into strong, vigorous, mature birds. In other words, the number of eggs produced, the size of the eggs …

Experimental Studies Of Cultivation Of Certain Vegetable Crops, J. E. Weaver Apr 1928

Experimental Studies Of Cultivation Of Certain Vegetable Crops, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

For those who have an interest in the ecology of cultivated plants, Thompson's experimental studies on vegetable crops has a wealth of information. This memoir deals not only with the effect of cultivation on yield, but analyzes the several factors of soil moisture, soil temperature, and the production of nitrates as affected by cultivation, and the effect of weeds on these factors. Finally the root habits are studied, and a correlation is made between the root system and the response of the plant to cultivation.

Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert Mar 1928

Spraying Tree Fruits, C. C. Wiggans, E. H. Hoppert

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

The production of sound, clean fruit is unquestionably one of the major problems facing the modern fruit grower. Culture may be neglected and pruning delayed for a time but the omission of sprays for even a single season demonstrates their absolute necessity. This applies equally to the commercial grower and to the farmer or gardener who has only a few trees.
