Underground Plant Development In Its Relation To Grazing, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Grasslands or grazing lands are relatively dry lands. Drought, at least in the surface soil, is always imminent. The necessity for the seedling to make immediate and extensive contact with deeper, moister soil is apparent. The water relation is usually controlling, and the success or failure of the seedling largely depends upon its ability to develop an absorbing system adequate in extent and activity to furnish the necessary supply.
A Record Of Post-Glacial Climate In Northern Ohio, Paul B. Sears
A Record Of Post-Glacial Climate In Northern Ohio, Paul B. Sears
Papers in Ecology
This paper reports the probable course of post-glacial forest succession in northern Ohio, as indicated by a study of fossil pollen deposited in the Bucyrus Bog. The object of the study has been to trace in greater detail than has yet been possible the course of climatic change since the end of the Wisconsin glaciation.
The principle employed is one which has been used in numerous European studies since 1915. It consists of a tabulation of the percentages of pollen grains of each species found in successive levels of bog deposits, and deduction of the prevailing forest composition at each …
Circular No. 86 - Coccidiosis Of Chicken, D. E. Madsen
Circular No. 86 - Coccidiosis Of Chicken, D. E. Madsen
UAES Circulars
Coccidiosis is a highly contagious disease of chickens and other fowls which is widespread and destructive, especially to half-grown chickens. The heaviest losses occur in chicks from 2 to 10 weeks of age. Just prior to and during their first laying season, pullets sometimes become affected with the disease in a chronic form. The cause is a microscopic protozoan parasite, the oocyst form of which is present in the droppings of diseased birds in large numbers. At least three species of the parasite have been recognized in fowls. The severity of the outbreak is thought to be determined by the …

Bulletin No. 219 - Twenty-Eight Years Of Irrigation Experiments Near Logan, Utah: 1902-29, Inclusive, D. W. Pittman, George Stewart
UAES Bulletins
Since 1902 irrigation experiments have been a major part of the research activity on the Greenville (Central) Experimental Farm near Logan, Utah. The experiments have been concerned mainly with the effects of different quantities of irrigation water, the minimum water requirement of crops, and the effects of different seasonal distribution of the water. This publication aims to give a brief summary of this work as it relates to crop yields as well as the more recent results up to and including 1929.

Bulletin No. 218 - The Alfalfa-Seed Chalcis-Fly In Utah: 1926-29, Inclusive, Charles J. Sorenson
UAES Bulletins
During the past 10 or 15 years alfalfa-seed has constituted the major crop in western Millard County and in most of that portion of the Uintah Basin which is situated in Utah. In these sections of the state various natural conditions generally have been favorable for seed production. Within the last five years seed growers have thought that one of the principal limiting factors of the industry has been the alfalfa-seed chalcis-fly. Accordingly, a preliminary survey in the seed districts of the state was made in the fall of 1925 by the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine
Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine
UAES Circulars
Too much importance cannot be given to the number and kind of calves raised. The life of an average cow is 6.5 years. To maintain the present number of cows in Utah about 15,385 heifer calves should be raised annually. One-half of all calves born are males and are usually disposed of in a few weeks; the other 50 per cent are females from which selection must be made to maintain the herds. In many parts of Utah the number of dairy cows should be increased and probably the best way to accomplish this is to raise carefully selected calves.

The Development Of The Gametophyte And The Apogamous Sporophyte Of Pteris Quadriaurita, Var. Argyraea, Moore, Anno Mary Sendik
Bachelors’ Theses
In 1.848 Leszczyc-Suminski reported the appearance of sporophyte tissue element in a fern gametophyte. He observed tracheids near the apical notch of a prothallium of Pteris sulcata L. Wigand (1849) described an outgrowth from the apical notch of a fern prothallium. This was no doubt the development of an apogamous embryo. However, due to the uncertainty regarding the purity of some of his cultures, this development cannot be referred to any particular fern.

Laboratory Applications Of Present Day Knowledge Of The Hormone Of The Anterior Lobe Of The Pituitary Gland, Herman F. Geske
Laboratory Applications Of Present Day Knowledge Of The Hormone Of The Anterior Lobe Of The Pituitary Gland, Herman F. Geske
Bachelors’ Theses
The history of a pregnancy diagnosis is an old one. In the report of Dr. S. Ashheim is a note which bears this out. The women of ancient Egypt used a rather crude method. Whether it was an efficient test the records do not state. Considering the fact that pregnancy and germination and growth are correlative, these women of the Nile probably were not so far wrong theoretically, whatever the practical results may have been. Their method was to put barley and wheat grains in a pot. These grains were wettened with urine from a woman who thought herself pregnant.

Circular No. 85 - Chlorosis Yellowing Of Plants: Cause And Control, F. B. Wann
Circular No. 85 - Chlorosis Yellowing Of Plants: Cause And Control, F. B. Wann
UAES Circulars
Chlorosis is a disease of plants, the characteristic symptom of which is the yellowing of the leaves. The disease is of sporadic but widespread distribution in Utah and the aggregate losses caused by it are undoubtedly greater than those of any other one disease. Not only are many plants killed, or weakened to such an extent that only inferior crops are produced, but many areas of land which might otherwise support profitable orchards have been abandoned or planted to other crops because of the disease.

The Symptoms Of Spindle Tuber And Unmottled Curly Dwarf Of The Potato, R. W. Goss
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
The differentiation of the virus diseases of the potato on the basis of symptoms is an important but difficult phase of the virus problem. A knowledge of the variation in symptoms due to environmental factors is necessary both in investigational work and in the practical application of our knowledge to the control of these diseases in the field. A fairly comprehensive knowledge of the masking effect of certain environmental factors upon the symptoms of the mosaic group has been obtained through the work of various investigators. Considerably less information is available concerning the effect of environment upon the symptoms of …

A Study Of Preprations From Buckwheat Hulls, Rudolf A. Zivnuska
Bachelors’ Theses
Industry is trying to make use of all possible material. In an age of great manufacturing plants, efficiency Is decreased and costs mount rapidly whenever a waste product tends to be formed in a process. The problem resolves itself into selling someone else the waste products in a modified form, if necessary. At the present time, waste products support industries to which they were formerly a liability. In the Ford wood waste distillation plant in 1929, over $2,100,000 worth of benzol was sold. This is in addition to gas, charcoal, methanol and power gotten from the exothermic action from the …
The Use Of Chlorates For The Eradication Of Certain Perennial Weeds In Utah, Lionel Harris
The Use Of Chlorates For The Eradication Of Certain Perennial Weeds In Utah, Lionel Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Perennial weeds have retarded agricultural progress, since their first appearance in cultivated fields. They have grown and survived the destructive efforts of the farmer and agricultural scientist, over a great period of time. Many farmers have become discouraged and much valuable land has lain idle because of this wasteful weed persistence.
These dismal consequences have stimulated constant effort at experimental stations to discover more effective methods of battling the pest. The use of chemicals has been one of the most prominent weapons and, of the most recent chemicals tried, the chlorates are the most promising.
Principles Of Irrigation Farming As Developed By American Field Experiments, Prabh Dyall Sikka
Principles Of Irrigation Farming As Developed By American Field Experiments, Prabh Dyall Sikka
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Irrigation is "the artificial application of water to the soil for the purpose of getting large and steady crop yields". It is supplementary to rainfall and the quantity of water applied and the time of application, therefore, must be determined by the character of the rainfall. Irrigation is usually practiced in those regions which have low rainfall as natural precipitation at such places is insufficient to meet the full water requirements of crops.
A Study Of Bull Associations, Arthur J. Morris
A Study Of Bull Associations, Arthur J. Morris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
"A cooperative bull association", according to the United States Department of Agri culture, is "a farmers' organization formed for the purpose of joint ownership, use, and exchange of high class, purebred dairy bulls."
The members of the association are divided into three or more groups of neighboring farmers, each group being known as a block. A block may consist of one herd or several herds and contains from 40 to 60 cows. One bull is used in each block, and in order to prevent inbreeding, each bull is moved to another block every two years. If all the bulls live …
