The Effect Of Theelin Upon The Growth And Development Of The Genital Tracts Of The Female White Rat, Robert H. Grogan May 1933

The Effect Of Theelin Upon The Growth And Development Of The Genital Tracts Of The Female White Rat, Robert H. Grogan

Bachelors’ Theses

This paper has been designed to meet the requirements of a bachelor's thesis. The main substance of the thesis is a reiteration of some of the work done by other men in the field of ovarian hormones with some original work on the part of the author. I have endeavored to prove that theelin controls, to some extent at least, the development of the genital tracts of female white rats. Especial care was taken to follow out in detail the methods used by Doisy and his associates in similar experiments so that I would have a criterion by which to …

A Critique Of Some Of The Metabolic Changes In The Mucosa Of The Alimentary Tract, Anthony Sanfelippo May 1933

A Critique Of Some Of The Metabolic Changes In The Mucosa Of The Alimentary Tract, Anthony Sanfelippo

Bachelors’ Theses

Among the many clinical conditions found in human beings, by both physician and surgeon, metabolic changes in the mucosa or peptic ulcer, as they are commonly known, stand out prominently from a purely scientific point of view, because of the divergent views brought forth during the past hundred yea.rs by even the ablest men. Peptic ulcer is a condition which manifests itself by a disturbance of the alimentary and digestive tracts, locally shown by an erosion of the devitalized cells of the mucous membrane.

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny May 1933

A Morphological Study Of Daphniidae, Stanley E. Zawodny

Bachelors’ Theses

Th importance of fresh-water organisms is usually underestimated, especially by the very people who live near bodies of fresh-water and who thus can observe such organisms throughout the year. It is really easier to study minute life forms than it is to study larger organisms, for the former can be examined under all kinds of conditions as experiments are performed upon them. The purpose of this thesis is to give a short survey of the chief type among the fresh-water, Crustaceans, with special reference to morphology.

Heredity In Twinning, Dolores M. Kauffung May 1933

Heredity In Twinning, Dolores M. Kauffung

Bachelors’ Theses

Identical twins have been tn basis for a large amount of the evidence produced by scientists in upholding the contention that heredity is stronger and more important than environment.

It has been the purpose of this paper and the intention oi' the author to develop this theory and to attempt to discover how far heredity really affects the individual and. to what extent it may be influenced by environment.

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer May 1933

Parasitology: With Special Reference To The Frog, Leo M. Boxer

Bachelors’ Theses

Prior to the middle of the sixteenth century the knowledge of parasites, their habits, life-histories and forms as limited to a few external parasites and a few parasitic worms. Previous to the discovery of, and knowledge gained by, the study of microscopic parasites, and the effects produced by them, nearly all diseases were thought of as some sort of punishment for sins committed.

The establishment of the nursery school at the Utah State Agricultural College opened a means of approach to the infant and child nutrition problem from two angles:

First - as a highly effective agency for the direct improvement of the nutrition of the children under its charge; Second - as an opportunity for research into problems of child nutrition.

Pasteurized Versus Raw Milk In Brick Cheese-Making, Z. Doyle Roundy May 1933

Pasteurized Versus Raw Milk In Brick Cheese-Making, Z. Doyle Roundy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prime object of the work undertaken in the present study has been done with the view of determining whether or not the quality and yield of brick cheese may be improved by pasteurizing the milk from which the cheese is made. An effort should be made to put brick cheese-making on a more scientific basis and at the same time produce cheese of better and more uniform quality. Since milk, containing large numbers of undesirable microorganisms thus causing objectionable flavors and odors in dairy products, is frequently delivered to cheese factories to be processed, pasteurization seems to be one …

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson May 1933

Bird Studies Of The Bear River Marshes, Ernest W. Parkinson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The establishment of the Bear River Bay Bird Refuge has created for the state of Utah an immense and valuable biological field, a veritable paradise for naturalist and sportsman alike. The naturalist wants a place to study wild life and the sportsman desires game. With the proper control of open seasons on wild fowl the hunting instinct and incentive for the sport should be satisfied for the sportsman. To the naturalist this region will open up bountiful treasures of knowledge that is to be gained only by intense and prolonged scientific study.

Within this new field, and the limited time …

Inheritance Of Resistance To Loose Smut (U. Tritici) In Certain Wheat Crosses, Bion Tolman May 1933

Inheritance Of Resistance To Loose Smut (U. Tritici) In Certain Wheat Crosses, Bion Tolman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During recent years the principles of Mendelism have been used extensively in the production of the new types of plants possessing resistance to various diseases. Results of this mode of attacking the disease problem have been very favorable. Old varieties are gradually giving way to newer types equal to or exceeding in quality and productivity as well as possessing resistance to one or more diseases.

Loose smut (U. tritici) in wheat, while not as serious a problem in Utah as the covered smut (T. tritici), according to Tapke (14) has caused an average annual loss of between 50,000 and 100,000 …

An Epistemology, John D. Boon Apr 1933

An Epistemology, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

Our world lies midway between the stellar world above and the subatomic world below. It would be difficult to conceive of a more favorable position for a race that seeks to comprehend the material universe. This position makes it possible to look both upward and downward, and to use both telescopes and microscopes in obtaining empirical evidence upon which to build theoretical conclusions. A few years ago it might have been claimed that this midway position is more apparent than real; that by mere chance men had gone equal distance into things that were above and below their world; that …

Two commercial samples obtained from the local stores were compared with a crude sample from Jefferson Island mine.

The Silvan Flora Of The White Rock Lake Region With Reference To Soil Types, Landon H. Baker Apr 1933

The Silvan Flora Of The White Rock Lake Region With Reference To Soil Types, Landon H. Baker

Field and Laboratory

White Rock Lake, lying at the east border of the City of Dallas, has been the focus of considerable biological study during the past few years, and the writer has been especially interested in the trees growing in the region. In this connection the question arose as to whether or not a correlation might exist between the species of woody plants found in the locality, and the physical and chemical structure of the various soils of the vicinity. The recently completed Soil Survey of Dallas County offers data upon the origin and nature of these soils, and these have been …

A Case Of Congenital Aphalangia In Man, Mayne Longnecker Apr 1933

A Case Of Congenital Aphalangia In Man, Mayne Longnecker

Field and Laboratory

An interesting case involving an incompletely developed left manus came to the writer's attention some time ago. The third, fourth, and fifth digits were entirely missing, save for small fleshy outgrowths; the index was about one and a half centimeters long, and obviously contained a bone, while the thumb appeared to be only about a centimeter shorter than the thumb on the subject's other and normal hand. The wrist seemed to possess an unusual degree of flexibility, and the left arm was normal, although of slightly less circumference than the right, the difference being probably due to its less use.
