A Key To The Nebraska Cutworms And Armyworms That Attack Corn, Don B. Whelan

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The following key to the Nebraska cutworms and armyworms injurious to corn is based upon structural characters supplemented in some instances by color. Not all of the species in this key have been found in Nebraska; some are included because they are to be found in near-by states to such an extent that they probably are present in this state.

Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan May 1935

Notes On The Distribution Of Amphibia And Reptilia Of Ellis County, Kansas, Lawrence A. Brennan

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Comparatively little has been done concerning the listing or recording of the Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas. What records there are of the species are for the most part unpublished. Early papers dealing with Kansas herpetology are few in number. Little has been done in Ellis and the surrounding counties, so there seems to be a need for such an ecological study as has been carried out in this paper “Notes on the Distribution of Amphibia and Reptilia of Ellis County, Kansas . " The objectives kept in mind in preparing this report have been to attempt to …

The Nature And The Development Of Starch Grains In Seed Plants, Slyvester John Siudzinski Jr. May 1935

The Nature And The Development Of Starch Grains In Seed Plants, Slyvester John Siudzinski Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

In spite of the importance of the starch grain from many points of view little work has been done on its nature and development. This fact is interesting since the nature and the development of the starch grain claimed a large share of the attention of the early workers. They observed and described the starch grains from the earliest days of the compound microscope. It was then observed that starch from the different plants showed in many cases marked differences with regard to size, shape and structural markings of the individual grains.

Color Reactions As An Aid To Seed Indentification, Carlton Leo Schmit May 1935

Color Reactions As An Aid To Seed Indentification, Carlton Leo Schmit

Bachelors’ Theses

Plants have long been classified according to their physical likenesses and structures. To sort plants according to such a basis, a botanist uses a key. In most cases, these keys are based on the flower or fruit of the plant. Sometimes there are disadvantages in using these structures, because usually they are only present for a short portion of the year. In a few cases, the seeds or fruits of plants have been used as a basis of classification as, for instance, in the Umbelliferae, Alismaceae, and Bidens.

The Weather Effect On The Characteristic Protein Values In Wheat, Mary Margaret Murphy May 1935

The Weather Effect On The Characteristic Protein Values In Wheat, Mary Margaret Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

Scientific investigation has proved conclusively that the protein content of the wheat kernel is the most important factor in determining the quality of the flour obtained. A high protein wheat is used for flour for bread making, and a low protein wheat for pastry flours. The quality of the protein must be determined by baking experimental loaves.

The year 1934 was a year of drought. In all parts of the country the wheat crops were affected by the lack of rainfall; hence, the protein value of the wheat must necessarily have been affected in some manner. The United States Department …

The Circulatory System In The Extremities Of The Domestic Cat From A Gross Anatomical Standpoint, Harold Liebenstein

Bachelors’ Theses

The mammalian circulatory system serves the prime purpose of furnishing the body with food to carry on its functions. The domestic cat is closely related anatomically and physiologically to the human being, which makes it an excellent animal for laboratory work or experimental purposes.

Bachelors’ Theses

Nicotine or nicotin, named from Jean Nioot who introduced the tobacco plant into France in 1565 is the characteristic alkoloid of the tobacco plant, Nicotiana tobacum, in all parts of which it occurs to the extent of from six tenths of one per cent, to four and eight tenths per cent.

The Inheritance Of Some Human Traits, Robert H. Crawford May 1935

The Inheritance Of Some Human Traits, Robert H. Crawford

Bachelors’ Theses

Although the proper collection and observation of necessary data with reference to the application of Mendel's laws of heredity to man has been brief, it has disclosed evidence significant enough to make it appear highly probable that many of the characters in man follow these laws as well as do the traits of lower animals.

The object of this thesis was to determine whether or not certain human traits were inherited, the mode of their transmission from parent to offspring, and, if possible, the establishment of any proof of linkage in the human line.

A History Of Wool Manufacturing As It Is Related To Wool Marketing In Utah, George Elwood Spencer May 1935

A History Of Wool Manufacturing As It Is Related To Wool Marketing In Utah, George Elwood Spencer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been advocated by many sheep raisers and individuals interested in the wool industry of Utah, that wool manufacturing should become a leading industry of this state. Factors which seemingly corroborate such contentions are readily apparent. Utah's annual wool clip ranges between eighteen and twenty-five million pounds of wool.(1)*. The state is located in the center of the Western range states where the bulk of the higher quality wool of this country is grown. A part of the marketing costs of freight, commission charges to a limited extent, and high storage costs could be decreased. These savings would result …

Inheritance Of Resistance To Three Physiologic Forms Of Bunt In Ridit X Utah-Kanred Cross, Muhammad Ibrahim Shah May 1935

Inheritance Of Resistance To Three Physiologic Forms Of Bunt In Ridit X Utah-Kanred Cross, Muhammad Ibrahim Shah

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bunt is a serious disease of wheat found in nearly all weat-growing countries of the world. In India the disease is more severe in the northern provinces than in the central and southern provinces as the temperature during planting time is favorable to the germination of the fungous growth in the northern part. In the central or southern parts, this is not the case. In the United States this disease causes heavy annual loss. The amount of smut in a field, or the percentage of smutted heads, is generally taken as an index of the reduction in yield or loss …

A Taxonomical, Morphological And Distributional Study Of The Utah Cyprinidae /|Cby Sheldon Phipps Hayes, Sheldon Phipps Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The hydrography of Utah may be thought of as being roughly divided into two large general drainage areas--, the Colorado River draining the eastern halt and southern portion ot the state and the Bonneville Drainage encompassing the remaining part of it. Earlier workers have listed eight genera and fourteen species of minnows occuring in Utah. Of these this report includes seven genera and ten species found within the borders of our state.

A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker May 1935

A Survey Of The Literature Dealing With The Calcium-Phosphorus Metabolism Of Normal Children, Albertine Appy Noecker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study is to collect and organize all data available to the investigator on the subject of calcium and phosphorus requirements for normal children. Since it is the business of nutrition to maintain health and prevent disorders, leaving the cure of disorders to the medical profession, this study deals with the calcium and phosphorus metabolism of normal children and avoids going into the pathological phases, taking up rickets and tetany only in so far as prevention is concerned.

If this study has any value it lies in the fact that the findings of investigators seem to be …

Duststorms In The Southwest, John D. Boon Apr 1935

Duststorms In The Southwest, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

During the last few months there have [been] many duststorms in the southwestern part of the United States. Almost every day the newspapers have carried stories of these disturbances. It is difficult to tell whether or not these storms are becoming more frequent than they were in the early days, since accurate records of their occurrence and severity are of recent origin. However, there are some very definite reasons for thinking that they are becoming more frequent.

The Marsalis Terrace: A High Level Terrace Of The Trinity River, Dallas, Texas, Lewis Kelsey Apr 1935

The Marsalis Terrace: A High Level Terrace Of The Trinity River, Dallas, Texas, Lewis Kelsey

Field and Laboratory

The highest terrace of the Trinity River at Dallas on the Oak Cliff side of the river is named for Marsalis Avenue because of its extensive development along that thoroughfare. The Marsalis Terrace occurs in two well developed areas in Oak Cliff. Lake Cliff Branch divides the two sections and has eroded the central part of the terrace. The larger area of the Marsalis Terrace lies on the southwest side of Lake Cliff Branch. The second area lies in the vicinity of the Methodist Hospital on the northeast side of the Lake Cliff Branch.
