The White River Oligocene Rodent Diplolophus, Erwin Hinckley Barbour, Thompson M. Stout
Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)
The rich and varied nature of the mammalian faunas of the White River Oligocene has been recognized for many years, but the exact geologic succession is only now becoming known. In these faunal assemblages the rodents and lagomorphs appear to have been important elements, perhaps numerically as abundant in the Oligocene as are these same groups at present.

Increase Of Sporobolus Cryptandrus In Pastures Of Eastern Nebraska, J. E. Weaver, Walter W. Hansen
Increase Of Sporobolus Cryptandrus In Pastures Of Eastern Nebraska, J. E. Weaver, Walter W. Hansen
Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)
The severe drought of 1934 to 1938 has resulted in great losses in the plant
populations of native pastures. In Nebraska, little bluestem, Andropogon scoparius, and Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis, have almost disappeared, while big bluestem, Andropogon furcatus, and numerous other important pasture grasses have suffered heavy losses. In addition to shiftings within the plant populations to compensate these losses, such as an enormous increase in side-oats grama, Bouteloua curtipendula, notable and widely spread local extensions have occurred. Over thousands of pastures western wheat grass, Agropyron smithii, has spread widely, and in similar numbers sand …

Birdbanding, Frederick C. Lincoln
Birdbanding, Frederick C. Lincoln
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Birdbanding, by means of numbered bands, provides a method of studying living birds of all kinds. Scientific banding dates back to 1899, when a Danish schoolmaster, H. Chr. C. Mortensen, commenced systematically to band storks, teals, starlings, and two or three species of birds of prey. His success at once attracted the attention of European ornithologists, and it was not long before the birdbanding work came into prominence. At the present time banding is being actively conducted in North America as well as in England, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, Iceland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Hungary, Bulgaria, India, Morocco, …
The Efficiency Of Churn Washing Method And The Keeping Quality Of Butter As Indicated By Yeast And Mold Counts, T. Allen Evans
The Efficiency Of Churn Washing Method And The Keeping Quality Of Butter As Indicated By Yeast And Mold Counts, T. Allen Evans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Of all the equipment used in the manufacture of butter, no single piece has as close contact with the finished product as does the churn while at the same time no piece of equipment is more difficult to keep properly cleaned. The workers in the dairy industry have expended much time and effort attempting to build a churn which could be kept in a more satisfactory state, especially from a bacteriological point of view. As yet no satisfactory material for churn construction has been found to replace wood which at best is difficult to keep free of micro-organisms. Since it …

An Annotated List Of Snails From Texas And Northern Mexico Collected By C. D. Orchard, E. P. Cheatum
Field and Laboratory
A collection of land and fresh-water shells, principally from central, southern and southwestern Texas counties, with a few lots from Mexico, has been sent to me by Mr. C. D. Orchard, of San Antonio. Each lot was accompanied by ecological data; and since there were many intergrading forms, the following annotated list may be interesting and useful to field zoologists and systematists.
Geographic Factors In The Development Of The Fredericksburg Area, Carol Fritz
Geographic Factors In The Development Of The Fredericksburg Area, Carol Fritz
Field and Laboratory
As a result of economic stress in Central Europe following the Napoleonic Wars and the industrialization of the Rhine region, the Mainzer Verein-a society of nobles-was organized in Germany in 1844 to direct and protect German emigration. After considering several regions as possible locations for its future colonies, the Society ultimately decided upon an unoccupied section of central Texas. This decision resulted from a favorable report by the Company's agent, Prince Victor von Leiningen, despite the fact that another agent, Count von Boos-Waldeck, advised against settling the Texas area because of the expense of transportation and lack of protection from …

The Spiders Of South Dakota, Allan G. Peterson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Spiders constitute the order of Araneida, which is one of the principal divisions of the class Arachnida. The Arachnida also includes scorpions, whipscorpions, pseudosscorpions, harvestmen, mites, and ticks. Some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Araneida are as follows: The head and thorax are consolidated into a cephalothorax. The abdomen is unsegmented and joined to the cephalothorax by a short narrow stalk. There are six pairs of appendages on the cephalothorax: chelicerae, pedipalps with heir basal masticulatory endites, and four pairs of walking legs.

A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham
A Preliminary Study Of The Vegetative Cover In Spanish Fork Canyon, Utah, Ben S. Markham
Theses and Dissertations
Spanish Fork Canyon is located in central Utah and is part of the Wasatch Mountain range. Since the coming of the white man to this section of country it has been used as a trail. The canyon provides summer range for stock as well as a watershed. Plant densities were determined by the point observation method using series of one-hundred square foot plots. Three areas which have been subject to different grazing uses were studied. The association changes in the canyon are the replacement of sage by slender wheatgrass on the shallow soils and the disclimax condition resulting from over-grazing …

Common Native Grasses Of Nebraska, A. L. Frolik, F. D. Keim
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Twenty-four native grasses that are the most important and most generally distributed in Nebraska are described and illustrated in this circular. Information concerning their distribution and economic value is given. Anyone interested in learning to identify the common native grasses should be able to do so by comparing plant specimens with the illustrations and descriptions herein presented. The work of identifying grasses may seem technical and limited only to botanists or those with similar training. Nearly anyone, however, can learn to identify many of the native grasses if willing to spend a little time and effort.

Compiled by the Federal Writers' Project in Nebraska
"Nebraska cattlemen have more than 13,000 brands registered with the Division of Live Stock Brands in the Secretary of State's OFfice.
All the brands are a part of the folklore of the state, since their designs were originated by the stockmen themselves...Regardless of whether the brand design was made into a romantic flourish of the setting sun, or into a simple initial, it became a trademark and thing of pride for its owner. So all these cattle brands, apart from their practical worth in the stock business, have an aura of romance …

Project 179 of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station - "A Study of the Agricultural Resources of Utah and their Utilization" - was set up in April 1936 us a state-wide project. The object of this project was to measure by areas the basic agricultural resources of the state and to translate the information collected into a program of more efficient use. The more specific objectives were: (1) classification of agricultural lands of Utah according to present and potential productivity and use; (2) determination of the net productive area of agricultural lands and water supply now available, or which may be …

Bulletin No. 282 - Pioneering In Western Agriculture
UAES Bulletins
A resume of the First Half-Century of Research 1888 - 1938 at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station including the Biennial Report 1936 - 1938.
The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station in reaching the fiftieth year of its history can look back upon a brilliant record of achievement covering the practical as well as the more fundamental problems of agriculture in this arid state. The difficulties encountered in conquering deserts down through human history have demonstrated the mastery of man's spirit over his physical environment. Man's destiny to multiply, subdue, and replenish the earth cannot be accomplished by enjoying the fruits of …

A Manual For Hog Raisers, W. J. Loeffel
A Manual For Hog Raisers, W. J. Loeffel
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars
Hogs are one of Nebraska's principal sources of agricultural income. The popularity of the pig is doubtless due largely to his efficiency as a meat producer. He uses less feed to make a given gain than either the steer or the sheep. On being slaughtered, the pig dresses out a higher percentage of meat than either of the other two meat animals. Since pork is generally fatter than beef or lamb, it has a higher energy value. Pork lends itself to curing processes and, as cured meat and lard, occupies an important place in the world's commerce. Processing aids in …
