Hermaphroditism Among The Hesperiidae (Lepdoptera, Rhopalocera), H. A. Freeman Jan 1940

Hermaphroditism Among The Hesperiidae (Lepdoptera, Rhopalocera), H. A. Freeman

Field and Laboratory

While among the Lepidoptera hermaphroditism has previously been well known, this phenomenon has hitherto been considered unusual among the Skippers….Bell is of the opinion that hermaphroditism occurs more frequently among the Skippers than was previously thought. Since this rather obscure group of butterflies is often overlooked by the casual collector, it is easy to see why so few hermaphrodite Hesperiids have been collected and observed.

Changes In True-Prairie Vegetation During Drought As Determined By List Quadrats, J. E. Weaver, Joseph H. Robertson, Robert L. Fowler Jan 1940

Changes In True-Prairie Vegetation During Drought As Determined By List Quadrats, J. E. Weaver, Joseph H. Robertson, Robert L. Fowler

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

The drought of 1934 was not only the most severe on record for the true-prairie association but was also of the earliest inception.  On June 8, Kincer ('34) stated that "pastures are the poorest ever known, and the hay crop will be extremely short, regardless of future weather."  The stress increased as the summer advanced.  Stoddart ('35) tood advantage of these conditions to investigate the relation of osmotic pressure and water content of prairie plants to environmental factors in the vicinity of Lincoln, Nebraska. Simultaneously, Nedrow ('37) was conducting trenching experiments in his study of the efficiency of absorption at …

Possibility Of An Additional Meteorite Crater Near Odessa, Texas, John D. Boon, Claude C. Albritton Jr.

Field and Laboratory

In the vicinity of Odessa meteorite crater are a number of sinks which, viewed from the air, closely resemble the crater in plan and general configuration. It is suggested that at least one of these sinks may be a meteorite crater modified, since the time of its formation, by the solvent action of ground water on the underlying bedrock.

Sequent Occupance In The Central City Area, Colorado, Mary Grace Gillespie Jan 1940

Sequent Occupance In The Central City Area, Colorado, Mary Grace Gillespie

Field and Laboratory

Man's desire for the precious metals has taken him into remote areas of the earth. This untiring search for gold lead to the exploration of the canyons of the Rocky Mountains. In 1859 there appeared in an isolated mountain valley of northern Colorado, a small settlement, later to be known as Central City, that boomed suddenly, lived brilliantly, and died quickly, only to be revived in 1932.

Petroglyph And Pictograph Site In The Finlay Mountains, Dodd N. Osburn

Field and Laboratory

In the Finlay Mountains at longitude 105° 39' west, and latitude 31° 23' north, Fort Hancock Sheet, Texas, there is a former Indian campsite located on the steeper face of a cuesta fronting the east. Crude natural shelters are formed by many of the boulders which bestrew the cuesta face. They were derived from the cap rock of Cox sandstone. Many of these boulders and the face of the cliff formed by the cap rock are covered with petroglyphs.

Free Radicals, Joe Adams

Field and Laboratory

Free radicals are complexes of abnormal valency, which possess additive properties, but do not carry an electrical charge and are not free ions. Since Lavoisier introduced his theory of radicals in 1785 there has been the conviction among chemists that the radicals of organic chemistry could be isolated in the free state.

Studies In Forest Pathology. Iii. Hypoxylon Canker Of Poplar, J.E. Bier Jan 1940

Studies In Forest Pathology. Iii. Hypoxylon Canker Of Poplar, J.E. Bier

Aspen Bibliography

It is generally accepted that the economic importance of poplar is increasing, and a more detailed knowledge of the diseases affecting the various species is urgently needed.

This investigation deals with a canker disease found on aspen poplar (Populus tremuloides Michx. and P. grandidentata Michx.) resulting from the attack of the fungus Hypoxylon pruinatum (Klotzsch) Cooke. The heavy mortality due to Hypoxylon canker in widely separated regions clearly indicates this to be a most destructive disease of young aspen. Lorenz and Christensen (15) after making a survey of the disease in the Lake States mention that "Hypoxylon pruinatum …

Shrubs For Wildlife On Farms In The Southeast, Verne E. Davison Jan 1940

Shrubs For Wildlife On Farms In The Southeast, Verne E. Davison

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

On many farms in the Southeast patches of briars and small scrubby growth have been allowed to grow up in pastures, fields, and meadows, where they interfere with good farming. Shrubs have therefore come to be thought of all too often as plants that should be destroyed. The areas they occupy are shrubbed out and burned in an attempt to combat insects and to present an appearance of clean farming. This treatment destroys ground cover and hastens erosion. It deprives wildlife of food and shelter. It reduces the number of beneficial insects but does not exterminate the noxious kinds.

Shrubbing …

A New Genus Of Distomes (Trematoda) With Lymphatic Vessels, Harold W. Manter Jan 1940

A New Genus Of Distomes (Trematoda) With Lymphatic Vessels, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The trematodes described in this paper are but two of over 100 species collected from marine fishes in 1934, during the third G. Allan Hancock Expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The author's presence on this expedition was sponsored in part by the Carnegie Institution of Washington. A brief preliminary report on the trematodes collected has been made (Manter, 1934) and a more complete report on the digenetic forms is in preparation. An early description of these two forms is felt justified in view of their significance in connection with the phylogeny of the Distomata. The author has already indicated (Manter, …

Digenetic Trematodes Of Fishes From The Galápagos Islands And The Neighboring Pacific, Harold W. Manter

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

During January, February, and March of 1934 it was the· privilege of the writer, aided by the Carnegie Institution of Washington, to accompany the third Allan Hancock Expedition to the Galápagos Islands. A preliminary note concerning the trematode parasites collected has been published. Several papers dealing with various helminths collected have appeared. The present paper deals with the digenetic trematodes collected from fishes. Five hundred and thirty-two fishes, including nearly one hundred different species, were examined. Approximately 80 per cent of the species and 43 per cent of the individuals harbored some kind of trematode. Meserve records 22 species of …

Deterioration Of Grassland From Stability To Denudation With Decrease In Soil Moisture, J. E. Weaver Jan 1940

Deterioration Of Grassland From Stability To Denudation With Decrease In Soil Moisture, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The great drought has now prevailed intermittently in the mid- west for a period of seven years. Damage to native vegetation in 1934 has been partially repaired, but further destruction has also occurred. Continued study of the shiftings in dominance among the grasses has revealed widespread losses of certain species and partial or complete replacement by others. Forbs also have greatly diminished, both in number of species and in abundance, and changes in structure of vegetation generally have been pronounced (3, 4). Hence it seemed advisable during 1939 to study the degree of deterioration of the grasslands, if any, from …

A Study Of Local Size Variations In The Prairie Pocket-Gopher (Geomys Bursarius), With Description Of A New Subspecies From Nebraska, Myron H. Swenk

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Beginning in the fall of 1913, the writer has continuously been interested in accumulating accurate body measurements, taken in the flesh, of Nebraska pocket-gophers. As a result quite an assemblage of such data has been secured. In the case of Geomys bursarius, the bulk of these data relates to specimens trapped in the vicinity of Lincoln, Lancaster County, involving to date 48 adult and 38 immature males and 50 adult and 65 immature females. Recently these measurements have been tabulated and compared with such measurements of the species as have been recorded in the literature from other parts of …

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Viii. A Comparison Of Alfalfa Meal And Artificially Dried Sudan Grass Meal In Rations For Growing Chicks, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

1. The effect of replacing the ten parts of alfalfa meal in a ration with artificially dried Sudan-grass meal on an equivalent protein basis was studied in a growth and body-analysis experiment with two lots of day-old chicks. 2. The chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of dry matter during the feeding trial. 3. There were no significant differences in the growth rate or composition of the chicks at the end of a six weeks' feeding trial.
