Occurrence Of A Disease Of Side-Oats Grama, R. L. Fowler, J. E. Weaver Jun 1940

Occurrence Of A Disease Of Side-Oats Grama, R. L. Fowler, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The beginning of a disease of Boateloua curtipendula, first observed in 1937 but occurring in alarming proportions in 1939, is of much interest. The fact that this grass has increased greatly during the past six years, from a rank of seventh or eighth among dominants of true prairie to one of the two or three most important species, adds unusual economic interest. Moreover, side-oats grama not only has very wide distribution and is being grown abundantly in grass nurseries of the Soil Conservation Service but also it is one of the most drought-resistant among the best grasses for rejuvenating …

Primitive Uses Of Pine Among The Indians Of The American Southwest, Evert Albert Snyder

Biology ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to show the various uses to which species of the genus Pinus were put by the aborigines of the American Southwest. The author will endeavor to portray the importance of this seed as a primitive food and the extent to which the wood was employed as a building material. In addition it will be shown how the pitch was of importance both as an adhesive and as a water proofing material and, finally, the mythology and ceremonial usage of pine will be outlined in order to set forth the extent to which the genus …

The Life History Of The Coyote, Samuel William Bowman Jr. May 1940

The Life History Of The Coyote, Samuel William Bowman Jr.

Biology ETDs

The size, weight, and color of coyotes vary, of course, with the subspecies, with the locality, and with the time of year. It would probably be best to introduce this material on the description of the coyote with, first, a general description of members of the family Canidae and, second, with a general description of all coyotes.

The Distribution Of Plant Types In The Escalante Desert Of Utah With Relation To Soil Conditions, Carlyle B. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

This problem was a study of plant species in the Escalante Desert, Utah, in relation to soil conditions. The plants were surveyed by the transect-plot method. The plants and soils were analyzed by percentage-frequency techniques. There is no measurable correlation between soil series and the dominant plants which occur on the soils. There is no correlation between soil types and the plants that are dominant on the soil types. There is a definite correlation between textural classes of the soil and the plants that are dominant on these classes.

Early Nebraska Cooking - Nebraska Folklore, Federal Writers' Project

Special Collections

Produced by the Federal Writers' Project in Nebraska

"Early Nebraska cooking, because of its lack of variety, often became unappetizing for even the least fastidious settlers. Sowbelly (salt pork), corn meal and coffee were nearly always on the table for the main meals."

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish May 1940

The Influence Of Whole Wheat, Bran And Shorts On Body Weight And Feather Growth In Chicks, F. E. Mussehl, C. W. Ackerson, M. J. Blish

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The proteins of the entire wheat kernel and of the bran and shorts are apparently utilized with equal efficiency by growing chicks when used with a base of corn, barley, oats, meat scraps, fish meal, and soybean meal. The relatively higher protein levels of bran and shorts, as compared to ground wheat, should be considered by the poultry producer in deciding which product or products can be used with greatest economy. A good concentration of a feather-growth factor is found in wheat bran. Other common feedstuffs carry the same essential, and the amount of bran which should be used in …

It is the purpose of this circular to present data and suggestions that will aid the farmer in attaining greater success in the planting of sorghum. It has been prepared primarily for the machine operator; and, although it is not a complete discussion of planters and listers, it contains highly practical suggestions regarding the adjustment of the corn planter and lister for sorghum seed.

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim May 1940

Buffalo Grass For Lawns, E. F. Frolik, F. D. Keim

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

During the years since 1934 many bluegrass lawns in Nebraska have suffered serious deterioration as a result of drouth and high summer temperature. As a substitute the native buffalo grass has been used increasingly for lawn purposes. Results of experiments and observations indicate definitely that for certain locations buffalo grass has sufficient advantage over bluegrass to recommend it as a permanent lawn grass.

The Highland Park Shopping Village: A Planned Sub-Retail Center, Carol F. King, Mary Grace Gillespie

Field and Laboratory

The purpose of this paper is to set forth the way in which a specific sub-retail center has been planned and built in order to more efficiently serve the trade territory on which it depends. The shopping center selected for study is one of several strikingly similar projects which are being developed in widely separated areas west of the Mississippi River. All have been in operation a relatively short period of time, each was begun almost immediately after the financial crisis of 1929, and each has been built to meet the demand by automobile trade for more accessible and less …

Weight Loss With Carbohydrate-Free Diet In Male Albino Rats, Carroll R. Olson May 1940

Weight Loss With Carbohydrate-Free Diet In Male Albino Rats, Carroll R. Olson

Bachelors’ Theses

There are a good many clinical facts which suggest that people vary in their susceptibility to dietary deficiency disease. Hence, not all of the crew of a scurvy-ridden ship, come down, nor does everyone in a famine zone develop malnutritional edema.

A Histological Comparison Of The Small Intestine Of The Frog And Man, Eli Getch May 1940

A Histological Comparison Of The Small Intestine Of The Frog And Man, Eli Getch

Bachelors’ Theses

Without the aid of a microscope, Bichat in 1800 studied tissues of various parts of the body, and, even though he did not make any cellular sketches, his work laid the foundation for histology. Then after the announcement of the cell theory by Schleiden and Schwann in 1839, a new path opened for histological study. Leydig (1864) applied the histology of that day to the lower animals. Cajal (1906) cleared up the complicated relations of the tissues together with a complete investigation of the nervous system.

A Study Of The Skeletal System Of Emys Blanding Turtle, Joseph M. Mosovsky May 1940

A Study Of The Skeletal System Of Emys Blanding Turtle, Joseph M. Mosovsky

Bachelors’ Theses

The turtles have a bony investment or shell, into which the legs, head, and tail maybe drawn. In some turtles there is a hinge on the lower part of the shell that enables the animal to enclose itself more completely. Turtles which have no way of defending themselves other than by their shells have a well developed plastron and carapace for protection, but our vicious friend the snapping turtle whom nature has provided with powerful jaws and muscles has a comparatively small plastron. The marine turtles have the limbs fin-like, indicating their aquatic life. The land turtles have them short …

A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Embryo In The Germinating Tubers Of Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Baker, Verne Schwalbach May 1940

A Historical Study Of The Development Of The Embryo In The Germinating Tubers Of Nephrolepis Cordifolia, Baker, Verne Schwalbach

Bachelors’ Theses

The tubers of Nephrolepis cordifolia.- Baker were first reported and studied by Professor Heinricher (1881). His work with the tubers was concerned with what he termed regeneration. However, this term, regeneration, was found to have the same connotation as the term germination and the two were used interchangeably throughout his work.

The Effects Of An Insufficient Carbohydrate Diet On The Leucocytes Of The Normal Albino Rat, Carl Frederick Glienke May 1940

The Effects Of An Insufficient Carbohydrate Diet On The Leucocytes Of The Normal Albino Rat, Carl Frederick Glienke

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis deals with the effects of an insufficient carbohydrate diet on the differential counts of the leucocytes of the common albino rat. The experiment was chosen because of the interesting problem it presented and because little could be found on work done regarding it. To the ’writer’s knowledge, very little work has been done in even establishing a definite differential count of a normal rat, much less working on one under an abnormal condition. Because of this lack of information, a normal count was first established for the strain used, and then this count was compared with that of …

A Cytological Study Of The Intestinal Glandular Epithelium, Mary Judelle Zuiker May 1940

A Cytological Study Of The Intestinal Glandular Epithelium, Mary Judelle Zuiker

Bachelors’ Theses

Continuing from the stomach, the digestive tract becomes a smaller tube whose internal surface is much increased by means of folds--the plica circularis, the villi, and crypts of Lieberkühn. The plica (formerly known as valvulae conniventes) are really elevations of the submucosa covered on both sides by the entire mucous membrane-villi, glands, and muscularis mucosae. The mucosa membrane, or tunica mucosa, is lined by simple columnar epithelium in which many goblet cells are present, particularly in the deeper folds. The basement membrane, as well as the muscularis mucosa, are identical with those of the stomach.

It is intended in this paper to present the published data obtainable; to report original data; to analize this data; and to try to establish some law of heredity by which the phenomenon of Heterochromia Iridis is transmitted from generation to generation.

Resistance To Staphylococcus Aureus In White Rats, Robina B. Langill May 1940

Resistance To Staphylococcus Aureus In White Rats, Robina B. Langill

Bachelors’ Theses

An investigation of bibliographies shows that staphylococcus aureus in its pathogenic potentialities has been extensively investigated from varied points of view and with frequently conflicting results.

Staphylococcus aureus is most frequently associated with furuncles, wound infection, and minor skin abcesses. Occasionally, however, due to extreme lowered resistance or other conditions not fully understood, staphylococcus causes a septicaemia which is attended by an 80% mortality rate. Post-mortem examinations of the victims of such septicaemia show an extensive invasion of all organs of the body by the bacteria but more particularly a hyperplasia of the lymph nodes, the spleen and thymus, indicating …

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington May 1940

Inheritance Studies And Possible Linkage Relationships In Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs, Freeman J. Byington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many studies on inheritance in barley have been made, but very little progress has as yet been obtained. Barley in many ways is an attractive plant with which to make inheritance studies. Unlike common wheat with 21 chromosome pairs and few distinct characters, barley has only 7 chromosome pairs and consequently only 7 possible linkage groups and many distinct characters that may be readily recognized. The chief difficulty is that many of these characters cannot be readily classified because a number of factors may be responsible for their production.

The purpose of this project has been to study in considerable …

Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson May 1940

Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The importance of an accurate measurement of fat in milk deliveries is fully appreciated by most producers and plant operators. Since milk is purchased on a fat basis, the accuracy of the procedure used in sampling and testing the milk has often been questioned by both the buyer and seller.

A composite sample to be theoretically correct, should consist of aliquot portions of the milk shipments represented. Where aliquot portions are to be taken, a milk thief is commonly suggested. This device takes a vertical column of milk from the weigh tank. The idea is that the height of the …

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison May 1940

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parasitic protozoa of the intestinal tract of man were first observed by Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Dutch microscopist. In the year 1681, while observing his own excrement, Leeuwenhoek discovered and described certain forms of life which he called "animalcules" and which were verified later by workers in protozoology as Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite of the intestinal tract. During the period preceding the later part of the 19th century many observations of the parasitic intestinal protozoa of men and lower animals were made and many species were classified. It wasn't, however, until the year 1875 that a protozoan …

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman May 1940

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the turn of the century there has been a trend within the State of Utah toward more and smaller farms. The original farm units taken up by the early settlers of this state have been divided and subdivided until Utah today has hundreds of uneconomical-sized farms too small to be operated profitably under their present organization.

Utah State Agricultural College Graduates Now Living In Other States, Robert Dawson Simpson May 1940

Utah State Agricultural College Graduates Now Living In Other States, Robert Dawson Simpson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This is a study of graduates of the Utah State Agricultural College who have left Utah and are now residing elsewhere. Inquiries by faculty members and interested alumni, as well as the writer's own interest in the subject of migration, prompted the organization of this study.

The immediate reason for the inquiry was an enlarging interest on the campus concerning the present whereabouts of graduates who have left the state. When present residence was ascertained, other questions arose. What kind of employment had migrating graduates secured? What major interests were had? What important voluntary public services are graduates rendering to …
