Population Size And Longevity Of Males And Females In Drosophila, Kathleen M. Murphy May 1943

Population Size And Longevity Of Males And Females In Drosophila, Kathleen M. Murphy

Bachelors’ Theses

The two ever present instincts of man are self-preservation and the propagation of the race. At the beginning of one’s life this urge to survive is wholly unconscious but later on this will to live Is supplimented within the individual as a definite conscious search for longevity. Awareness to this inherent and universal desire to live is evidenced by the sought after services of the physician or doctor; the presence of civil law with the law courts and many other protective establishments. This conscious awareness to the possibilities, no matter how slight, of extending or at least maintaining life has …

Studies Of The Excretory System Of The Passer Domesticus, James Julian Stout May 1943

Studies Of The Excretory System Of The Passer Domesticus, James Julian Stout

Bachelors’ Theses

In past years and in recent years most animals have been made a subject of study. However, very little or no research has been made on the most common of all birds, the English Sparrow. This thesis will endeavor to take up the study of the excretory system of the Passer Domesticus. In most animals the excretory organs are the kidneys and the skin, which pass of nitrogenous and other waste matters from the body. I will take up the main organ of this system the kidney at this time, with a histological study of the ureter, and leave the …

A Study Of The Digestive System In The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Henry Joseph Wisniewski May 1943

A Study Of The Digestive System In The Sparrow (Passer Domesticus), Henry Joseph Wisniewski

Bachelors’ Theses

The digestive tube proper of the Sparrow beings with the Oesophagus. This is a soft tubular organ which serves to convey food rapidly from the pharynx to the stomach. It extends along the median ventral margin of the neck lying dorsal to or to one side of the trachea. Posteriorly, at the base of the neck and shortly in front of the sternum it broadens slightly and gives rise to a dilated region of the oesophagus, namely the Crop, "whose secretion serves to moisten the food or even to initiate digestion." In larger birds as in the pigeon, the crop …

The Urogenital System Of The Male And Female English Sparrow, Passer Domesticus, Peter Paul Wisniewski May 1943

The Urogenital System Of The Male And Female English Sparrow, Passer Domesticus, Peter Paul Wisniewski

Bachelors’ Theses

The testes is a pair of oval organs posterior to the lungs and anterior to the kidneys. Each testes is attached by a mesentery to the anterior end of the kidney. An adrenal gland is located at the anterior portion of each testes. The vasa deferentia are slender convoluted tubules. Each arises from the median edge of the testes passes cauded along the ventral surface of the kidney, paralleling the ureter and enlarging slightly at the distal end to form a small seminal vesicle, which enters the urogenital region of the cloaca by a papilla. The male urodaeum is smaller …

An Electrophoretic Determinatin Of The Properties Of Methacrol M.E. By The Use Of A Capillary Cross-Arm "U" Tube, Richard Reiland Bains

Bachelors’ Theses

this research was undertaken primarily to discover the use of a capillary cross-arm "U" tube in the determination of the electrophoretic and other electrical proper ties of a plastic emulsion.

The primary objective was to determine the isoelectric point of the emulsion and also the optimum pH or electro-endosmotic motion.

The secondary and distant objective was to note when, how, and it any coherent plating on the electrodes took place.

The Study Of The Effects Of Paradichlorbenzene On Drosophila Melanogaster, Dwain J. Paal May 1943

The Study Of The Effects Of Paradichlorbenzene On Drosophila Melanogaster, Dwain J. Paal

Bachelors’ Theses

The object of this investigation was to produce polyploid cells in the salivary glands of Drosophila melanogaster by treatment with paradichlorbenzene. Polyploidy is the condition in which the number of chromosomes in the nucleus is an exact multiple of the somatic or diploid number greater than two. This phenomena has often been referred to as produced by incomplete nuclear division.

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore May 1943

The Influence Of Dowicide A On Drosophila Melanogaster, Helen Mary Dore

Bachelors’ Theses

Drosophila melanogaster plays a far greater part in science than man at first realizes. A study of their heredity makes it possible to develop laws of human heredity and with this knowledge, thus provide for the betterment of mankind. Considerations which lead to the choice of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, in experimentation are briefly the following: (a) its small size which makes, it convenient to keep; (b) its short life cycle; and (c) the ease with which it can be cultivated. Since fruit flies are so important to science, it follows that it is also important that a …

Survey Of Farmer Transportation Facilities, Needs And Uses, W.P. Cotton, Norris J. Anderson Apr 1943

Survey Of Farmer Transportation Facilities, Needs And Uses, W.P. Cotton, Norris J. Anderson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

A statewide study of transportation facilities, needs and uses was begun in South Dakota, July 1, 1941, The study was initiated primarily because of the shortage of rubber and the threat of a nation-wide transportation shortage. Although the rubber situation seems to be easing somewhat, it is still very apparent that our transportation facilities must be conserved to the utmost in order to maintain our transportation system for the promotion of the war effort. Three phases of the transportation study which is being carried on in South Dakota, have previously been completed: namely, (1) the survey of creamery, produce, and …

Growth Seed Yields, And Seedling Production Of Native Prairie Plants In Various Habitats Of The Mixed Prairie, H. Ray Brown Apr 1943

Growth Seed Yields, And Seedling Production Of Native Prairie Plants In Various Habitats Of The Mixed Prairie, H. Ray Brown

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The native vegetation of the mixed prairie of west-central Kansas was subjected to the worst drought on record during the period 1933 to 1939 inclusive. Data secured from the United States Weather Bureau reveal the fact that precipitation during this period of drought was far below normal . The rainfall deficit as reported by Albertson and Weaver (1942) was nearly 35 inches for this 7-year period. Other climatic factors such as wind movement, relative humidity, and temperature were equally abnormal. The extreme drought period greatly modified the vegetation of the mixed prairie and the short-grass disclimax. The basal cover in …

Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis Apr 1943

Conception Rate In Dairy Cattle By Artificial Insemination At Various Stages Of Estrus, George W. Trimberger, H. P. Davis

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

A breeding experiment with 295 dairy cows and heifers of the Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, and Holstein breeds was conducted in the University of Nebraska dairy herd. The females were given artificial services at various stages of estrus to determine the effect of time of service upon conception. The results obtained indicate the potential benefits in higher percentage of conception in females bred during the middle of estrus, toward the end of estrus, and those bred in full heat and rebred in 24 hours. The latter is usually not very practical, especially in artificial breeding rings, but there are occasions when …

The Biological Effect Of An Invisible Radiation On The Drosophila Melanogaster, Leo C. Massopust Jr. Apr 1943

The Biological Effect Of An Invisible Radiation On The Drosophila Melanogaster, Leo C. Massopust Jr.

Bachelors’ Theses

In a series of investigations, Massopust describes various effects he obtained with an invisible radiation which he called infra-red. The results he obtained seemed to indicate that this radiation might have some effect on development and growth. Hence, the Drosophila Melanogaster was chosen for experimentation to ascertain whether or not the invisible radiation he used would produce mutations. Personal communications from this author disclosed that up to the present writing he has not been able to establish definitely that the radiation lies somewhere in the infra-red band of the electro-magnetic field. He does, however, favor the interpretation that it is …

Bulletin No. 303 - Utilization Of Irrigable Land In The Reservation Area Of Uinta Basin, Utah, George T. Blanch, Clyde E. Stewart

UAES Bulletins

Several years ago the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station began a project entitled "Study of agricultural resources in Utah and their utilization." This project contemplates conducting detailed soils, irrigation water, range and economic studies in all areas of Utah. To date these studies have been made for a portion of the state including the Uinta Basin. However, in order that the information so obtained can be more effectively used for public and private programs of operation, there is a need to combine and correlate the basic data.

The primary objective of the study reported herewith is to bring together and analyze …

Bulletin No. 307 - Skin Folds In Sheep, Milton A. Madsen, Alma C. Esplin, Ralph W. Phillips Mar 1943

Bulletin No. 307 - Skin Folds In Sheep, Milton A. Madsen, Alma C. Esplin, Ralph W. Phillips

UAES Bulletins

Sheep vary greatly, even within breeds, in the number and size of folds in the skin. At one time producers were emphasizing the importance of having a large number of skin folds in fine wool sheep such as the Merino and Rambouillet. This was based on the belief that skin folds were associated with high yields of grease wool and fineness of wool fibers. In recent years the trend has been toward a smoother bodied sheep with longer staple and less grease in the fleece.

The objects of this bulletin are to present a review of the available information concerning …
