The Nymph Of Enallagma Basidens Calvert (Odonata, Coenagrionidae), Alice Ferguson

Field and Laboratory

The species Enallagma basidens Calvert, one of the abundant Coenagrionid Odonates of Dallas County, Texas, is widely distributed in the streams and ponds of the county. As its nymph has never, so far as I can discover, been described, I take occasion to do so in this brief note.

The Root System Of Aspen, Maurice W. Day

Aspen Bibliography

The quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is widely distributed. In the Lake States region it occupies a larger area than any other tree species. Because it occupies such a large are and because of the difficult silvicultural problem which it presents, this species demands careful investigation. This present study was initiated with the objective of adding to the knowledge of the silvics of the species.

North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver Jan 1944

North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

From the highlands of central Mexico across the entire United States and northward into Canada extends the great mid-continental prairie. On the east it is in contact with the deciduous forest. From this central mass the prairie extends westward beyond the Rocky Mountains across Wyoming into eastern Utah, and southwestward through northern New Mexico in to northern Arizona. The Palouse Grasslands occurred in eastern Oregon and Washington, and other parts of the far Northwest. The Pacific Prairie was found in the Great Valley of California, and the-Desert Plains Grassland still occupies much of southern Arizona and New Mexico and southwestern …

Recovery Of Midwestern Prairies From Drought, John E. Weaver Jan 1944

Recovery Of Midwestern Prairies From Drought, John E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

The long period of desiccation, which began in 1934, finally terminated in 1940. The western portion of True Prairie was greatly decimated and a veritable mosaic of types of vegetation resulted. These ranged from well-preserved relict communities of bluestems (Andropogon) to mixed stands of grasses on nearly bared soil, but included communities of western wheat grass (Agropyron smithii) , short grasses (Bouteloua gracilis and Buchloe dactyloides) , needle grass (Stipa spartea), and prairie drop seed (Sporobolus heterolepis) . These types varied in size from a few square rods to many …

Ec44-5-116 Christmas At Wartime, Clara M. Newleee

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Should we celebrate Christmas during war times? Why not? Does it help the heartache to sit glumly in the corner and moan? Will this help one or will it help the boy or girl in the service of his or her country? In these war times with all their bad influences and horrible happenings we need to keep up at home every type of mellowing influence and to search out all the inspirational ideals available.

It's fun to make gifts. Much of the joy of Christmas comes in the anticipation and preparation. The making of gifts adds personal touch for …

A Suggestion As To The Cause Of Glaciation: The Reciprocal Reinforcement Theory, John D. Boon Sr. Jan 1944

A Suggestion As To The Cause Of Glaciation: The Reciprocal Reinforcement Theory, John D. Boon Sr.

Field and Laboratory

The temperature of the earth depends largely upon the energy received from the sun, and the promptness with which this energy is returned to space. In the long run the energy received by the earth must be equal to that given out. If the energy received is returned at once, it will have no effect upon the temperature of the earth. In this case the earth will be just as cold as it would be if the sun did not exist. This means, of course, that there must be a lag in the return of solar energy if it is …

William Douglas Wallach, Pioneer Hydrographer Of Texas, S. W. Geiser Jan 1944

William Douglas Wallach, Pioneer Hydrographer Of Texas, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

A recent issue of the Southwest Review gives an account of some phases of the life of William Douglas Wallach (1812-71), noted editor of the Washington Evening Star (1853-67), and at an earlier period (1838-45) surveyor and newspaper editor in Texas. To an historian of scientific work and exploration in Early Texas, the career of Wallach is of especial interest. Almost the first hydrographic work on inland coast-wise waters of the State was done by Wallach in his survey of part of Matagorda Bay, 1839 (at the request and expense of the Board of Aldermen of Matagorda.

Influence Of Aspen, Young Lodgepole Pine, And Open Grassland Types Upon Factors Affecting Water Yield, E.G. Dunford, C.H. Niederhof Jan 1944

Influence Of Aspen, Young Lodgepole Pine, And Open Grassland Types Upon Factors Affecting Water Yield, E.G. Dunford, C.H. Niederhof

Aspen Bibliography

Burned and cutover lands in the Rocky Mountains present a distinct problem in watershed management. Many of these areas support a cover of grass or aspen rather than their original stand of lodgepole pine or spruce. Generally the new cover provides adequate protection from erosion, but there has been question regarding its other watershed qualities. In order to evaluate some of these qualities this preliminary study was undertaken in Colorado. The results indicate that, from the standpoint of water available for streamflow, aspen and grass are probably superior to a dense coniferous forest.

Freezing Fruits And Vegetables, Minerva Kellogg Jan 1944

Freezing Fruits And Vegetables, Minerva Kellogg

Agricultural Experiment Station Home Economics Pamphlets (1943-1957)

More fruits and vegetables have been produced for home use this year than for any previous year for some time, and methods of preserving this food are needed. Canning is, of course, always a good method, but since the homemaker may not be able to obtain tin and rubber for containers, she must seek other ways to save her surplus garden products. The sharp freezing and storage of foods is one of the new and popular methods of preserving fruits and vegetables. Locker plants operating in South Dakota offer freezing service and many of them butcher and package meat. A …

Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver Jan 1944

Effects Of Drought, Dust, And Intensity Of Grazing On Cover And Yield Of Short-Grass Pastures, F. W. Albertson, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The vast range lands of western Kansas occupy approximately one half of that area. They are now recovering from the terrible destruction wrought by overgrazing, drought, and dust-burial during the past decade. Since grass is man's most powerful ally in soil and water conservation, since pastures are tremendously important as the cheapest and most satisfactory feed for cattle, and since the recovery of the western range is not only an economic problem of great importance but a phenomenon of outstanding ecological interest, the redevelopment of the plant cover warrants careful investigation.

External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare Dec 1943

External Parasites Of Poultry And Methods For Their Control, O. S. Bare

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

External parasites cause severe losses to Nebraska poultry producers each year, and in many cases may be the deciding factor between success and failure. Under present circumstances, when maximum production is essential, prompt and effective measures must be taken to hold these saboteurs in check.
